From Nkwen to Hollywood: Why Fon Azefor III Honoured World-Renowned Surgeon Dr. Mal Fobi for a Lifetime of Service
In Muteff situated off the jaws of Abuh in Fundong Subdivision of the Boyo Division of Cameroon's North West Region, elders often say that no matter how far a child travels, the footsteps that matter most are the ones that find their way back home. During village gatherings, it is not uncommon to hear stories of sons and daughters who left in search of education and opportunity but whose greatest honour came when their communities welcomed them home—not because of the wealth they accumulated, but because of the lives they transformed. Across the grassfields of Cameroon, traditional recognition has long been reserved for those whose achievements elevate the dignity of their people.
It is perhaps in that spirit that His Royal Highness Fon Azefor III of Nkwen bestowed one of the Fondom's highest traditional recognitions on Emeritus Dr. Mathias Asongwe Lawrence (Mal) Fobi during the 25th Convention of the Nkwen Cultural and Development Association (NCDA) in Maryland, USA, on July 17, 2026.
The black cap, black shirt, two traditional necklaces, ceremonial cup and traditional bag presented to Dr. Fobi symbolized more than tradition. They reaffirmed his enduring role as Ntungfor of the Nkwen Fondom in the United States and acknowledged a lifetime devoted to medicine, mentorship, philanthropy and service to his homeland.
Born in Nkwen in 1946 to Vincent Tamfu Fobi and Barbara Ngeche Fobi, Dr. Fobi's remarkable journey began humbly. After attending St. Joseph School Mankon, he joined the pioneer class of Sacred Heart College Mankon, where students famously helped build their own classrooms brick by brick. Those early experiences nurtured the discipline and resilience that would define his career.
His dream of becoming a doctor nearly ended before it began. Although awarded a scholarship to study medicine at Lovanium University in Congo, the opportunity was unexpectedly withdrawn. He travelled to Yaoundé hoping to plead his case before then Vice President John Ngu Foncha but never secured the meeting he sought. Rather than surrendering, he persevered, and in 1966 earned an ASPAU scholarship to the United States, where he completed pharmacy studies at the University of Michigan before obtaining his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati.
His career changed forever after treating a patient who suffered complications from an intestinal bypass operation. The encounter exposed not only the medical burden of obesity but also the social prejudice experienced by patients. Inspired to find better solutions, Dr. Fobi pioneered innovations in bariatric surgery that would transform the field worldwide.
In 1981, he established America's first centre dedicated exclusively to obesity surgery. His development of the Fobi Pouch and the Fobi Ring significantly improved long-term weight-loss outcomes and earned him international recognition as one of the world's leading bariatric surgeons. His research also contributed to scientific understanding of hormonal changes following surgery, knowledge that later supported the development of GLP-1 therapies now widely used in treating obesity and type 2 diabetes.
His distinguished career saw him serve as President of the Foundation of the American Society for Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery, President of the International Federation for the Surgery of Obesity (IFSO), and later Chair of its Board of Trustees. His expertise also earned him the reputation as Hollywood's "weight-loss surgeon to the stars."
Yet, for many Cameroonians, Dr. Fobi's greatest legacy lies beyond the operating theatre.
Affectionately known as "Uncle Mal," he has spent decades mentoring international medical graduates, especially young Cameroonian doctors navigating the demanding pathway to medical practice in the United States. He coached many for licensing examinations, provided employment opportunities and helped numerous families establish new lives abroad.
Through the NGWEBIFOR Foundation, named after his grandmother, he has shipped containers of medical equipment, hospital supplies and computers to Cameroon, financed university education for relatives, established a family health insurance scheme and quietly supported countless community initiatives.
"The greatest investment you can make is in people," Dr. Fobi often says. It is a principle reflected not merely in his words but in the generations of professionals whose lives he has helped shape.
Retirement in 2014 did not diminish his commitment. Although insecurity in Cameroon's North West and South West regions prevented his planned return home, he intensified efforts to mobilize diaspora expertise. Following the death of Monique Koumatekel in 2015, he became one of the driving forces behind the establishment of the Association of Cameroonian Physicians in the Americas (ACPA) in 2016 to strengthen healthcare collaboration with Cameroon.
Like many innovators, Dr. Fobi also encountered setbacks, including regulatory challenges surrounding the Fobi Ring and the eventual closure of Bariatec Corporation in 2019. Yet he remains philosophical: "I am satisfied that I contributed to mankind, and I have been richly rewarded."
Back in Muteff, elders also teach that a tree is remembered not by how tall it grows but by the shade it provides to others. That wisdom captures the significance of the honour bestowed by Fon Azefor III. In recognising Emeritus Dr. Mal Fobi, the Nkwen Fondom celebrated more than a world-renowned surgeon. It celebrated a son who carried his village into the world and, throughout a lifetime of achievement, never stopped finding his way back home through service.

Stakeholders from government institutions, local councils, traditional authorities, civil society organizations, and community representatives convened in Limbe from 20–21 July 2026 for a two-day workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Early Warning Systems (EWS), and Hard Plastic Reduction across the mangrove ecosystems of Limbe I, II, III, and Tiko municipalities.Organized by AJESH in partnership with MINEPDED, and supported by Sida and WWF under the Together for People and Planet (ToPP) Project, the workshop underscored the vital role of mangroves in safeguarding coastlines, sustaining livelihoods, conserving biodiversity, and enhancing resilience against climate change, flooding, and coastal erosion.Participants endorsed a Disaster Risk Mitigation Action Matrix and committed to stronger measures to curb hard plastic pollution while protecting the Limbe-Tiko mangrove ecosystems for future generations.
