Killing the Press in Cameroon: Communication Council Suspends Media Outlets Again

A release from the National Communication read yesterday over the national station-CRTV has taken media practitioners in Cameroon aback. Two Authoritative English language Newspaper have been suspended while one has been called to order. The Guardian Post Newspaper and its Publisher Ngah Christian Mbipgo were slammed a two months suspension while Chronicle Newspaper and its Publisher Eric Motumo were also slammed a three months suspension. The Watch Dog Newspaper and its Publisher, Dotta Ezikiel were warned. Public opinion in Aglophone towns are diversified over the issue. A school of thought holds that the suspensions are the handiwork of politicians while other fear that it is a plan to kill the English Language Newspapers in Cameroon. Even though the Communique specifies that the decisions were due to unorthodox practices, fears abound that it is a camouflage given that in order to hang a dog, it is always given a bad name. This is so because the politicians who felt that their plans to rig elections could be frustrated by these newspaper launched the action.
