Striking lawyers |
A document circulating on the internet and
purportedly signed by the leaders of the Common Law Lawyers Association has
triggered a lot of arguments on the social media. Yet popular opinion holds
that the much placarded “claims” by the lawyers disappeared along the corridors
of Hotel des Deputes in Yaounde. Fears have also been raised
why the representatives of the lawyers only met CPDM Anglophone MPs and not all
the English Speaking decent members of Parliament. Doubts as to whether a
rubber Parliament and not to talk of a group of CPDM MPs could find solutions to lawyers problems abound high. The meeting which was chaired by Hon. Monjuwa
Lifaka Emilia was intended to mediate the current impasse of the Common Law
Lawyers. However, accordingly during the meeting the following recommendations
were reached at by both parties.
- · Parliamentarians shall strongly condemn the maltreatment of lawyers during the strike action in the North West and South West Regions
- · An independent parliamentary commission enquiry should be set up to ascertain the circumstances of the attack of lawyers in the North West and South West Regions
- · The law No 90/059 of 19th December 1990 organizing practice at the Bar be amended to reflect the creation of a Cameroon Common Law Bar Association and other provisions to that might necessitate amendment
- · That all officials who directly or indirectly contributed towards the attack on lawyers in the North West and South West Regions be sanctioned
- · Request the immediate uplifting of the ban on North West Lawyers Association (NOWELA) and Meme Lawyers Association (MELA) and the decision suspending the activities of Fako Lawyers Association (FAKLA)
- · Magistrates, court registrars and Bailiffs should be deployed nationwide according to their legal background
- · Immediate return of lawyers’ wigs and gowns , and other personal effects that were seized from lawyers
- · Compensate victims of the attack
- · Call for an enlarge meeting with justice sector stakeholders
- · Simultaneous publication of laws in both English and French
- · Enactment of a language code which publishes those who violate its application
- · Creation of a law school
- · Creation of a Common Law bench at the Supreme Court
- · Creation of Common Law department at ENAM
- · Include lawyers of both legal systems into the higher judicial council
