Elvis Paul Tangem Receives Belated Award as Climate Change Campaigner

By B Buhdih
HRH Fon Gwan Mbanyasiq handing award to Elvis Paul

One of Cameroon's environmentalist currently working with the Great Green Wall for the Sahara and Sahel (African Union) who was voted last year as Best Climate Change Campaigner has received the belated award.  Elvis Paul Tangem, it should be noted was voted last year by readers The Eye Newspaper as the Best Climate Change Campaigner the year. Yet he was not present at the fun-filled award ceremony in Nkambe last August 9, 2014 due to his busy schedule. The belated award was recently handed to him a forth night ago. Before handing the award to Elvis, the President of Cameroon Traditional Rulers Against Climate Change recommended his efforts in fostering the wellbeing of Mother Earth. According to HRH Fon Gwan Mbanyamsiq, the award is the fruit of hard work, determination, development orientation and dynamism.
On his part the chairman of The Eye jury Award, Gwain Colbert Fulai outlined that Elvis Paul joined the African Union, he had proven himself as an exemplary organized person and refined environmentalist. As one of the prominent environmentalists his abilities impacted lives in the North West Region when he was working with the FAO and later Burkina Faso where he worked with Tree Seed.

Today’s glories, they say are the products of yesterday’s planning. Thus tomorrow’s better days are also the product of today’s planning. But do people ever plan for tomorrow? Most people do not, relaying on the adage that let tomorrow take care of itself. This is however a defeatist nature by those who are weak. That is why those who adopt this do not excel in life. But those who do are always able to draw a line from one cause to effect. This is certainly so with environmentalists because sustainable development has become a singsong on every lip and modern technology has placed humanity on a fast line. But on this fast line, many do falter while rare species like Elvis Paul Tangem do excel.
That is why young men with extraordinary abilities like Elvis Paul Tangem could hide from the public eye. To HRH Fon Mbanyamsiq, the award is to encourage him in his cause for humanity.
Moved by the recognition, Elvis Paul said that he is touched that his little efforts have caught public attention. He added that the award will serve as a stimulant for him to continue to with his work in fostering sustainable actions.

he presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, received more votes than President Goodluck Jonathan in polling units within Aso Rock Villa, an area that contains the official residence of the Nigerian president.
Results from polling units 021 and 022, located in Aso Rock, revealed that Mr. Buhari’s APC polled 265 and 348 respectively in the presidential election. Mr. Jonathan, who ran for reelection on the ticket of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), received 293 and 302 respectively in the two polling units.
In the senatorial election, the APC scored 260 votes in polling unit 021 and 337 in unit 022 337 to beat the incumbent president’s party which received 286 and 281 in the respective polling units. The results for the House of Representatives showed that the APC also defeated the PDP in Aso Rock, garnering 255 and 334 in the two respective polling units, with the PDP receiving 254 and 241.
Mr. Buhari’s defeat of President Jonathan in Aso Rock is seen as significant, since most of the voters in the two polling units are either staff of the Presidency or their families who reside near the president.
More results of yesterday’s elections will be officially released today, but preliminary figures indicate that Mr. Buhari has what one source at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) described as “a comfortable lead.”
Voting will be concluded today in some polling units in a few states where disruptions or the late arrival of electoral materials led to postponement of elections yesterday. #‎Nigeriadecides #‎Nigeria2015

National Assembly: Hon. Awudu’s Private Member Bill on Wetland, Watershed, Protection Impresses Chairman’s Conference

Hon. Awudu Mbaya: Climate Change Campaigner

Hon. Awudu Mbaya Cyprian, Questor at the National Assembly cum Executive President of Pan African Parliamentarians Network on Climate Change-PAPNCC is expected to defend a private member bill in Cameroon parliament on why wetlands, catchment areas and watersheds should be given the same protection like humans. The bill submitted by Hon. Awudu Mbaya got a passed mark in the Chairman’s Conference of the National Assembly to go into record as the first ever private member bill to have reached that level. In his capacity as Executive President of PAPNCC, Hon Awudu says if water as they say is life, there is a great need for water sources to be protected from harmful human activities. “We are facing serious water crisis in the country due to the fact that there is no law prohibiting human activities in and around water sources. Harping on the importance of water in mitigating the phenomenon of Climate Change, Hon. Awudu said that the situation could even be more precarious if all these areas are not protected.
Harping on this year’s International Water Day’s theme Hon. Awudu emphasized that the theme “Water and Sustainable Development”, is intended to highlight its role in the sustainable development agenda. He also added that although around 71 percent of the earth surface is covered with it, fresh water constitutes only 2.53 percent of the total amount. Surprisingly, most of it exists in the North and South Poles as ice. The real available freshwater resources in the world comprise only 0.2 percent. As a result, he continued, freshwater is becoming more and more valuable following the increase of population. From food and energy security to human and environmental health, water contributes to improvements in social well-being and inclusive growth, affecting the livelihoods of billions. The importance of water in human existence cannot be overestimated, he concluded.
Why MPs Should Endorse It
Water is life; it has no colour and knows no political party. It is a universal commodity that everyone relies on for survival. Coming barely few weeks after the International World Water Day was commemorated on March 22, 2015, expectations are high at that Cameroonian MPs will throw their weight behind the Bill. Worthy to note that the day has been observed since 1993 when the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed it as a day for sensitisation of the public on the critical issues of water and how it affects humanity. It is a necessity for health, sanitation, industries, agriculture and maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Yet, it is being depleted at a rate never ever seen since the beginning of civilisation. Everywhere, groundwater table is declining at alarming rate due to over extraction. This has put people to arsenic threat. In Cameroon, about three million people lack access to improved water sources.
It has resulted to the outbreak of periodic water borne diseases such as cholera and diarrhea due to inadequate water and neglect of water sources. Even studies on worst-case scenarios have warned that wars between communities will be fought over fresh water supplies. Therefore there is the need for policies to promote water conservation and support the protection of Wetlands, catchment areas and watersheds. Alarmingly, the problem of water shortage is getting worse due to asymmetrical rainfall accredited to climate change and a global water demand that is projected to soar by 55 percent within 15 years. It is time Cameroon MPs reflect this urgency as time is running out. Definitely, there is need to do whatever is necessary to secure the future and avert a disastrous one.

Breaking News: (Naija Presidential Election)Chaos Erupts During Voting Exercise Across Rivers State Reports Say

Courtesy of SaharaReporters
Chaos has erupted in Rivers State today, as the electoral exercise in the region has been threatened by violence. Citizen reporters on the ground have alerted SaharaReporters to acts of violence and mischief at polling units across the southern state.
As voters waited in the heat, reports suggest, tensions heightened. A number of fights are said to have broken out this morning, and at least one person is reported to have been shot.
Representatives at the election monitor CLEEN Foundation have said that gunmen arrived at Mile 4, Rumueme, Obiakpor local government area, Rivers State, and clashed with army personnel. "Some of the gunmen ran away with bullet wounds, same with the army personnel, but unconfirmed information has it that one of the army personnel is dead," the representative told SaharaReporters. "The time of the incident is between 8 and 9 a.m. today."
A second major problem in the state can be attributed to issues with accreditation on the part of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Card readers are said to have failed in many locations, prompting officials to implement manual accreditation. In some regions, INEC officials are reported to have not shown up all together.
Political mischief has also made an ugly appearance across the state. Ballot boxes across the country have reportedly been snatched, and materials missing or stolen. A citizen reporter told SaharaReporters "No INEC official or material is in Akuku Toru LGA, Wards 15, 16 & 17, and its environs. Materials have been snatched."
"Be on the alert that it has been observed that result sheets of some units are missing," the source added.
Echoing this report, others reported that a man was caught with fraudulent result sheets in the region.
These issues have generated massive attention, as elsewhere in the country, today's election has been relatively peaceful thus far. The confluence of these challenges in the state has prompted some local government areas to call off elections.
At the time of this report, elections appear to have been called off in the Opobo/Nkoro LGA of Rivers State. Kofi Bartels, host of the program 'Hard Facts' on Nigeria Info Port Harcourt, tweeted today that the contest in the location has been called off as the wrong materials were provided by INEC. "Elections in Opobo, Rivers State called-off," he wrote. "Wrong result sheets sent to the area

Card Reader Hitches Mar Accreditation Of President Jonathan, First Lady

Source: Sahara Reporters
Malfunction of some of the card readers led to the initial rejection of the voter cards of the President Jonathan and his wife.
First Lady: Patience Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience Jonathan, spent more than thirty minutes at their polling station in Otuoke, Bayelsa State as several card readers malfunctioned and could not accredit them this morning.
Our correspondent reported that the accreditation of the president and his wife was marred by malfunction of some of the card readers, leading to the initial rejection of the voter’s cards of the President Jonathan and his wife.
As the ad-hoc staff hired by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and deployed to the president's Otuabula ward 13 struggled with the equipment to accredit Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan, the card reader cleared the president’s mother, Mrs. Eunice Jonathan, and his aide de camp.
Another correspondent also reported that the card reader cleared Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State in his hometown of Toru-Orua in Sagbama local government area at 9.30 a.m. (Nigerian time).
President Jonathan waited patiently at the polling unit for 40 minutes after arriving for accreditation at 9.15 a.m. He then left the venue and headed back to his Yenagoa residence.
Speaking with reporters, he described the malfunction of the card reader as a “technical itch” and called on eligible voters to remain calm. “There may be itches no doubt, but you should know that this is the first time we are using the card readers and permanent voters card,” Mr. Jonathan said.
President Jonathan also disclosed that he had had a telephone conversation with the chairman of INEC, Attahiru Jega, on the noticeable itches across the country. He said even if there was a problem with his own card, as long as the process was going on well across the country, “it is okay. Definitely, they will sort out my own. I can't be a ghost voter. Everybody knows me.”
He said he was not worried over his inability to do accreditation, describing the delay as normal. “My interest is the conduct of credible and fair elections. We are totally committed and I believe no matter the itches, the election will be smooth,” he said.
The president also stated that he had received reports that voting in some units in some states, including Jigawa and Delta, had been postponed by INEC due to non-availability of polling material.
“It will affect the conduct of the House of Representatives elections. In my own polling units, some voters’ cards [were] going through the card reader but my voter card and that of my wife [had] some problems. If I can endure patiently, sweating, I urge Nigerians to be patient with the process. No matter the pains you take, as a nation, we can conduct free and fair elections that will be accepted worldwide,” Mr. Jonathan said.
He called on Nigerians to realize that the world was interested in the outcome of the elections, adding that world leaders, including United States President Barack Obama, Prime Minister David Cameron of the UK, and several African leaders, including those of South Africa, Botswana, and Sierra Leone have called on Nigerians to do good elections. “That is what we should think [about] with the temporary things and pains we may go through. The whole world is interested in the conduct of the elections. It is a sacrifice worth taking.”

Fight Against Boko Haram: Fru Ndi Visits Wounded Soldiers, Donates to Soldiers in the Battle Field

By Ron Maxime Nfor

Ni John Fru Ndi was flanked by Hon. Joseph Mbah Ndam, Hon. Joseph Banadzem, Hon. Awudu Mbaya, Senator Paul Tchatchouang, Sen. Tsomelou, Hon. Osih Joshua just to name the few. Approximately, over 50 SDF officials accompanied Ni John Fru Ndi to the military hospital in Yaounde where he donated foodstuff and boost the morale of soldiers. Fru Ndi’s delegation was received at the Military Hospital by Koumpa Isa, Secretary of State for Defence incharge of Retired Soldiers. The minister was flanked by Col. Albert Bonzo, chief medical officer in the hospital. In a brief statement, Ni John Fru Ndi said that the reason of his visit was to comfort wounded soldiers and also to encourage them for fighting to defend the integrity of Cameroon. According to SDF Chietain, it was imperative for him to encourage these soldiers who are fighting a just cause. He also added that the soldiers should count on his support and other political leaders of his standing. He said the lone message to the soldiers is a message of concern and concern. Fru Ndi continued that even though politicians may have their differences but when there is war, it cuts across the nation and concerns everyone, adding that “war has no political party and no political name”. War he said is bad and that is why nobody in the world would name his child “war”.
He also emphasized that the small gift from the SDF is a mark of blessing, concern and love to the military fight at the front. His largess included two cows (one of which was the bulls that he (SDF Chairman took to the Ebolowa National Agro-Pastoral show), bags of rice, bags of salt and gallons of groundnut oil. It should be recalled that this white dotted bull was one of the major attractions to President Biya and wife at the Ebolowa show. The fact that SDF Chairman decided to donate this bull to the soldiers has been interpreted by many as a symbiotic gesture.  The gesture by SDF national chairman was applauded by the public as a mark of honour and patriotism.

Donga Mantung Division: Suspected Dealers in Human Parts Arrested

The suspected dealers, Sule, Usmanu Tanko and Nyamsay Isa were arrested on March 18, 2015 at Sabongari (Nwa Sub Division) in possession of human parts (skull, bones) and transferred to the Nkambe prison. The story goes that Usmanu Sule (claiming relationship) with Aladji Musa contacted him and proposed that he should buy the human parts. Shocked by the type of business proposal, he immediately alerted his immediate surrounding and the police. When Sule and Usmanu Tanko arrived at Aladji’s home to take him to the alleged suppliers, ( Nyamsay Isa and Fortipme Salifou) they were picked up. Acting on the instruction of police, the two middlemen called the suppliers and arranged that they should meet at “Terre Rouge” given that Aladji doesn’t cross the river. Nyamsay Isa was already at the meeting point while Fortipme Salifou (both of the West Region) was still to cross the river when the police appeared. Fortipme (supposed owner) escaped while Nyamsay was arrested.
When quizzed how they got themselves involved in the business, Sule said that sometimes ago he travelled to Mante (West Region) for the burial of his in-law and when he got there, his friend Nyamsay Isa proposed to him that he had human parts and whether he could look for someone to buy them. He said when he came back to Sabongari, while in a discussion with his friends; he told them that Magba is a bad place because the other day one of his friends asked him to look for a buyer of human parts. Sule claimed that the day he met Nyamsay Isa, his father asked him what they were discussing for that long and he told him his friend was proposing that he had human parts for sell. According to Sule, he made his friend at Mante some 17km away from Magba(West Region) after they haven’t met for a very long time.
The suspected dealers: Sule, Nyamsay, Usmanu
While at Sabongari, Sule said he told his friend that Nyamsay had proposed to him that he has human parts for sell but he was not interested. On hearing this, Usmanu Tanko took interest in the business and latter told him that he will propose it to his friend Aladji.
On the other hand, Nyamsay Isa said he too was also introduced to the business by the supposed owner who escaped. According to Nyamsay Isa, his friend Fortipme Salifou was the person who dug the skeleton. And that he was introduced into the business by Fortipme Salifou (owner). Salifou he added only asked him whether he could look for someone to buy the human parts given that he is closer to Sabongari where such businesses take place especially as they are closer to Gembu in Nigeria. Allegedly, the owner of the business, Fortipme Salifou from Magba is said to have absconded from police dragnet given that at the moment he was across the river.
However, public opinion holds that the truth has not yet been revealed. This is so because even though they all claim they were middlemen in the business, a school of thought holds that the police should investigate the matter with seriousness. And the escapist Nyamsay Isa should be fished out to get his own side of the story. (To be continued)…..

Fight Against Boko Haram: NW CPDM Elite(s) Raise 80 to Support the Military Amidst Controversy

CDPM elite(s) of the North West Region have organized a four-in-one ceremony in Bamenda to support government in the fight against the terrorist sect Boko Haram. The event which started with an ecumenical service to pray for peace, a fundraising to boost the morale of soldiers fighting Boko Haram, ended with a peaceful march from the Bamenda Congress Hall to the Commercial Avenue. Baba Danpoulo alias Ndawara donated a total sum of 15 million FCFA while the  Yaounde CPDM elite(s) meeting donated 15 million as well. Holding under the patronage of Yang Philemon, Prime Minister and Head of Government, the Bamenda event also recorded some disenchanted voices.
It is interesting to note that some North West elite(s) who showed up at the Bamenda Congress Hall were taken aback when they noticed that the banners carried different messages. SDF mayors for example described the incident as a political ambush by CPDM militants. “We have to go back because this event has been CPDMized”, Jakiri mayor Jaff Romanus hammered. The mayor of Nkum, Bambui, Ndu and a handful of others disappeared from the Bamenda congress in anger. “We received invitations from the Prime Minister’s office to attend this event as North West elite(s) but I am disappointed that the event has been transformed into a political meeting of the CPDM. “We are North West elite(s) and not North West CPDM elite(s). Ndansi Elvis Nukam, national Youth President of NUDP also weaved his left hand to the event after having travelled from Yaounde. “I am National Youth President of NUDP and from all indication; I am not supposed to be here when judged from the banners. The fight against Boko Haram concerns all of us, but what I am seeing here is the anniversary of the CPDM”.
On the other hand, members of the Northwest Civil Society also expressed disgust. Awah Cletus, of the Coalition of North West Civil Society said that when they got to the Bamenda Congress Hall, the banner that greeted them was something else. “We are going to channel the funds we collected from our members to support the cause to the Presidency of the Republic”. Awah Cletus alias AC Risky also said that it is time for Cameroonians to know to make a clear-cut between the ruling party and government.
Even within the CPDM, some militants also expressed their frustration the way party issues are managed. Gerard Ngala, Interim CPDM section President for Donga Mantung I decried that communication is not flowing. He said that even though he is section President, he was never informed of the Bamenda meeting. Yaounde elite(s) he decried have been observed keeping information only to themselves. Gerard used the opportunity given him to announce his support to challenge the so-called Yaounde elite(s) in the way the handle party issues. Donga Mantung: 24 Years Old Electrocuted to Death

Fai Joseph
By Eric Tabah alias Titanic

An atmosphere of uncertainty looms in Ndu, Donga Mantung Division of the Northwest after a 24 years old achaba rider was electrocuted to death. According to what we gathered, Fai Joseph Nfor aka Bobo Jojo was trying to connect electricity from the neigbour to his own house when the cold hands of death snatched him from this world.
Last week, the entire Njiptop quarters in Ndu was gloomy as many were lamenting the untimely death of one of them.
A family source hinted that at the time young Fai Joseph started working on connecting the cables there were no lights. Ignorant of the fact that electricity doesn’t signal when it is coming back, he was using his bare hands on cables. Unfortunately he was killed on the spot. Bobo Jojo, it should be noted was married and father of four.
The rampant electricity cuts in Donga Mantung Division have reached crisis level. There is no single day that the area records less than 10 electricity cuts per day. Many are blaming his death on the electricity supply company which switches off electricity with informing its clients.

Dr. Nick Ngwanyam makes an anatomy of the Youths’ Problems in Cameroon, President Biya’s address to the Youths, and challenges Adults to Sit up and chart a better way for the Youths.

Today we will be focusing on young people, the future leaders of Cameroon who on February 11, 2015 commemorated the 49th edition of the National Youth Day. One Wiseman has said that the danger that confronts the younger generation is the example set by the older generation. Are we even conscious of the fact that we need to set examples for the younger generation, and what kind of examples? That is one of the issues Dr. Nick Ngwanyam would be addressing in today’s interview.

When I keep reminding myself that I am a youth, it gives me the energy to work. I am getting on to 59 and if I am still a youth that is fine.

Talk to me about your days as a young person. You are still a youth as you have said, but there was a time when you were an active young person.

In fact when I say I am a youth, it is just for the sake of joking. When you are beyond 40, you are no longer a youth. I think it is understood that you should go to school and get all your capacities put in place so that by the time you are 24, 25, you start working. So we expect the youth to start working from the time they are 24, 25. They should start making money, they should start putting in place their companies, businesses and investments so that by the time they are forty, they should see clearly what they were doing. They would have been married with two or three kids and have a sense of direction so that when they are fifty, they should actually be retiring from active work.

When you say retire, it does not mean you go to the village, that is you change that kind of activity which must have been strenuous; then you redefine something else and you start working at a different pace when you are fifty. You probably go to school and learn different skills and you start doing something in a more relaxed way. So many people get at fifty when they are not yet married because of the lost opportunity.

At what age would you like a young person to start behaving like an old person?

I do not know what you mean by an old person; behaving like an old person. I would imagine you want to say at what age should a youth start being responsible. You are assuming that old age comes with wisdom and responsibility and in Cameroon, you would find out that there are some people who are very young and very responsible and yet there are some people who are very old and very irresponsible. So old age in Cameroon does not equate to wisdom and that is a huge problem because a lot of young people have been looking up to people who are older hoping that they have wisdom. These are people who do not have wisdom and this is the reason why our youths are disturbed and lost.

Disturbed and lost because of you; yesterday’s youth do not want to probably bring them up. You want to eat the gizzards forever.

The problem here is that we do not know how to hand over the baton. Life is a relay and the way God made us, we are made in batches and we sit on this conveyor belt that goes from one station to the other.
