The pen, the people, the politics — Chris Mbunwe lived them all with honor

Chris Mbunwe was a man whose presence touched journalism, culture, and politics in Cameroon in profound ways. I first met him in 2000, when I was transferred from Yaoundé to Bamenda to serve as the North West Regional Bureau Chief of The Farmer’s Voice. From that moment, I recognized in Chris not just a journalist, but a refined professional deeply committed to truth and integrity. His reporting was never about chasing headlines; it was about giving voice to ordinary people and preserving the dignity of his community.
Chris’s career in journalism was remarkable. He served as Bureau Chief of The Post in Bamenda, where his sharp mind and fearless reporting earned him respect across the region. He also rose to become President of CAMASEJ, the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists, where he championed the rights and responsibilities of the press. More recently, he officially launched his own newspaper, a testament to his vision and determination to create platforms that spoke directly to the people.
Beyond journalism, Chris was a cultural hero. He carried the responsibility of leading the Wimbum community in Bamenda with grace and wisdom. His leadership was steady, never flamboyant, but always inspiring. He became a bridge between tradition and modernity, ensuring that cultural values remained alive while embracing the realities of change. People trusted him because he spoke with sincerity and acted with conviction.
Chris also stepped into politics, joining the Social Democratic Front. He contested elections with the hope of serving as a councilor, driven by a genuine desire to improve lives. Though his party was defeated, his courage to stand and his willingness to serve revealed his deep commitment to public life. Politics did not define him, but it showed his readiness to take responsibility for the collective good.
To me, Chris was more than a colleague; he was a good man. His humility, kindness, and dedication to service made him stand out in every sphere he touched. His legacy lives on in the stories he told, the community he guided, and the ideals he pursued. Remembering Chris is to honor a life lived with purpose, integrity, and compassion.
