Lake Nyos Disaster, 40 Years After

On the night of August 21, 1986, the tranquil waters of Lake Nyos turned into a silent killer. Without warning, a massive cloud of carbon dioxide burst from the depths, rolling across valleys and villages.
Entire communities were suffocated in their sleep, an estimated 1,746 people and thousands of livestock perished within minutes. Survivors woke to a world of eerie silence, where even birds had fallen from the sky.Forty years later, the memory of that night still haunts Cameroon. The lake, nestled in the volcanic highlands, remains a place of both beauty and danger. Scientists have worked tirelessly to install degassing pipes, slowly venting the deadly gas that continues to seep from beneath. Their efforts have reduced the risk, but the lake is not yet free from threat. The weakened natural dam at its rim adds another layer of uncertainty, reminding locals that vigilance is essential.

For the communities of Nyos and the wider world, the disaster became a lesson in the hidden power of nature. It reshaped scientific understanding of limnic eruptions, spurred global monitoring of volcanic lakes, and highlighted the fragile balance between human settlement and geological forces. Today, Lake Nyos stands as both a graveyard and a classroom — a place where tragedy gave rise to knowledge, and where resilience continues to grow in the shadow of loss.

ADB brings potable water to Ring Road communities

The African Development Bank (ADB) has brought hope and relief to communities living along the Ring Road by providing potable water through newly constructed boreholes along the stretch Ndu-Binka-Nkambe executed by MAG SARL.
Just a week ago, His Royal Majesty King Kwefi II of Binka carried out a traditional blessing at the borehole located at GTC Binka, an event attended by school administrators and community members who celebrated this life‑changing gift. Yesterday, the dedication continued at PHS, where Chaplain Naugee Edward led the ceremony in the presence of Rev. Avo Martin, Secretary of the Donga Mantung Presbytery, the PHS PTA President, and other distinguished guests. These twin events, blending cultural tradition and spiritual dedication, symbolize unity and gratitude as communities embrace clean water for health, education, and development. The ADB’s intervention marks a milestone in improving livelihoods along the Ring Road, ensuring that schools and families can thrive with access to safe and sustainable water.

2026 GCE Results: Friday of Destiny

The story of the 2026 GCE results unfolds like a ritual of anticipation. On Monday, August 18, 2026, the homologation committee gathered in Buea, a city that has long been the heartbeat of examinations in Cameroon. Behind closed doors, experts pored over scripts, statistics, and performance charts, ensuring that every mark carried the weight of fairness and accuracy.

As the committee concluded its work, the air across the country grew heavy with expectation. From Bamenda to Limbe, from Nkambe to Yaoundé, students and parents whispered the same question: “When will the results be out?” The answer was clear — Friday, August 21, 2026. That day would mark the release of the verdicts of months of sleepless nights, candlelit studies, and anxious prayers.
In classrooms and homes, hope and fear danced together. Some envisioned triumph, the gateway to universities and scholarships; others braced for disappointment, yet resolved to try again. The GCE Board, after its meticulous validation, prepared to unveil the results through centres, online portals, and SMS services. Thus, Friday became more than a date — it became a moment of destiny, when thousands of young Cameroonians would discover the next chapter of their lives.

Ring Road Construction Project: Adjacent Communities Trained on Agricultural Drying Racks

Farmers residing along the Ring Road stretch from Ndu through Binka to Nkambe have benefited from a practical training workshop on the importance of agricultural drying racks. The session, held on Friday, August 7, 2026, in the conference hall of MAG living quarter in Binka, was convened by the Cameroon Development Network in partnership with the African Development Bank (ADB), the Ministry of Transport, and MAG SARL.
The workshop brought together key facilitators, notably Cham Gilbert Chou, Divisional Delegate of Agriculture for Donga Mantung. All the 03 speakers emphasized the role of drying racks in improving post‑harvest handling, reducing losses, and enhancing food safety for farming communities situated along the Ring Road corridor.

Participants were guided through the complete cycle of drying rack construction, usage, and maintenance. The training combined theoretical explanations with hands‑on demonstrations,(learning by doing it), ensuring that farmers not only understood the principles but also acquired practical skills. During the practical segment, attendees engaged directly in building racks, learning how to select appropriate materials, assemble structures, and apply maintenance techniques to prolong durability.
The initiative forms part of the broader Ring Road Construction Project, which seeks to integrate infrastructure development with community empowerment. By equipping farmers with knowledge on drying racks, the project strengthens local resilience, promotes sustainable agricultural practices, and ensures that communities benefit from both improved transport access and enhanced food security. This training marks a significant step in linking road construction with livelihood improvement, underscoring the importance of inclusive development strategies in Donga Mantung Division.

CONCACAF Rejects FIFA Gambling

FIFA is facing challenges after unveiling a bold plan to launch a $20 billion commercial subsidiary, offering private investors a stake in the World Cup’s future. While UEFA responded with a dramatic boycott, CONCACAF chose a different path. Gathering its 41 member associations, the confederation rejected the proposal outright, condemning the lack of consultation and the rushed September deadline.
Leaders argued that football’s greatest asset must remain in the hands of its own family, not financiers. The U.S. Soccer Federation echoed this stance, strengthening the regional pushback. Unlike UEFA, however, CONCACAF stopped short of a boycott, leaving FIFA under immense pressure but with a narrow window for negotiation before the global game risks fracturing
When News Breaks Out, We Break In.

Football Versus Financial Stakes: Europe Says No to FIFA

In late July 2026, the football world was shaken when FIFA unveiled its ambitious plan: a $20 billion commercial subsidiary, offering private investors a share in the future of the World Cup. The proposal promised riches — payouts of $20 million per member association — but it carried a heavy cost. To UEFA, the heart of European football, this was nothing less than an attempt to sell the soul of the game.On July 30, UEFA gathered its 55 member associations in an emergency meeting. The atmosphere was tense, but the decision was unanimous: Europe would boycott all FIFA competitions. The statement was clear and uncompromising — “The World Cup is not for sale.”The ripple effect was immediate. Across the globe, confederations voiced their discontent. CONCACAF condemned the lack of consultation, while the Asian Football Confederation warned that FIFA’s plan could not succeed without unity. Even the English FA, often cautious in global disputes, declared solidarity with UEFA. In Brussels, the EU Commissioner for Sport praised UEFA’s stand as a defense of integrity against commercialization. The boycott’s implications were staggering. The 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil suddenly faced the prospect of losing Europe’s strongest teams. The 2030 Men’s World Cup, set to be co-hosted by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, now hung in uncertainty. Youth tournaments, too, would feel the shockwaves, beginning with the Under-20 Women’s World Cup.For FIFA, the crisis was existential. Without Europe — home to six of the world’s top ten teams — its competitions risked losing prestige, broadcasting power, and billions in sponsorship. For Gianni Infantino, the embattled FIFA president, the confrontation threatened his leadership and the very unity of world football. As deadlines loomed, the stage was set for a historic showdown. Would FIFA retreat from its plan, or would the global game fracture into rival camps? For now, UEFA’s stance echoed across stadiums and boardrooms alike: football’s crown jewel, the World Cup, must remain a shared heritage, not a commodity. This moment feels like the beginning of a new chapter in football governance — one that could redefine the balance of power between FIFA  its confederations.
