Runaway Athletes at Common Wealth Games Resurface

Reports say a group of runaway athletes who vamoosed into "sosongho" the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games last month have finally resurfaced with their visas due to expire later tonight.
Daily Telegraph reports that the group of African athletes who went missing are now consulting with the Refugee Advice and Casework Service in Randwick, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
Approximately 19 athletes disappeared during the Games, including five boxers and three wrestlers from Cameroon – one of whom was meant to face Kiwi fighter David Nyika in the heavyweight section quarter-finals.
The Australian Government emphasised during last month’s event that the athletes had not breached their visas by leaving the athletes’ village but they were warnings they would be tracked down as well as an urge to depart before the visas expired today.
“If they don’t want to be held in detention or locked up at the local watch house, they’d better jump on a plane before the 15th and comply with their visa’s conditions,” Australia’s Home Affairs minister Peter Dutton said.
It isn’t the first case of athletes disappearing during the Commonwealth Games.
In 2012, seven athletes from Cameroon were reported missing while back in 2006 in Melbourne, 14 athletes from Sierra Leone were eventually granted asylum after more than 40 competitors went missing.

Study: Yogurt Might Lessen Chronic Inflammation

May 15 (UPI) -- Consuming yogurt may help reduce chronic inflammation, which is a factor in bowel and cardiovascular disease, arthritis, asthma and obesity, according to a new study conducted in Wisconsin, known as the dairy capital of the United States.
Researchers at the University of Wisconsin at Madison studied the effects of yogurt on chronic inflammation, which is when the body attacks itself and affects organs and systems. Their findings were published Monday in the Journal of Nutrition.
"Eating eight ounces of low-fat yogurt before a meal is a feasible strategy to improve post-meal metabolism and thus may help reduce the risk of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases," Ruisong Pei, a UW-Madison food science postdoctoral researcher involved in the studies, said in press release.
As part of the body's innate immune system, inflammation is the first line of defense against illness and injury. But it becomes harmful when the inflammatory response lasts too long.
Anti-inflammatory medications -- including aspirin, naproxen, hydrocortisone and prednisone -- reduce the effects of chronic inflammation by improving the intestinal lining. It prevents endotoxins, which are pro-inflammatory molecules made by gut microbes, from entering the blood stream.
But the drugs have risks and side effects.
For two decades, researchers previously explored dairy products as a potential dietary treatment.
"There have been some mixed results over the years, but [a recent article] shows that things are pointing more toward anti-inflammatory, particularly for fermented dairy," said Brad Bolling, an assistant professor of food science at the school. He cited a 2017 review paper that assessed 52 clinical trials.
"I wanted to look at the mechanism more closely and look specifically at yogurt," Bolling said.
Bolling and his researchers enrolled 120 premenopausal women, 50 percent of whom were obese and the other 50 percent non-obese. For nine weeks, half of the participants were assigned to eat 12 ounces of low-fat yogurt every day and a control group ate non-dairy pudding.
During the study, blood samples were studied.
"The results indicate that ongoing consumption of yogurt may be having a general anti-inflammatory effect," Bolling said.
Those results were previously published last year in the British Journal of Nutrition.
In new research, participants were also involved in a high-calorie meal challenge at the beginning and end of their nine-week dietary intervention. They started with yogurt or non-dairy pudding followed by a large high-fat, high-carb breakfast meal.
"It was two sausage muffins and two hash browns, for a total of 900 calories. But everybody managed it. They'd been fasting, and they were pretty hungry," Bolling said.
In both challenges, blood work showed that the yogurt "appetizer" helped improve some key biomarkers of endotoxin exposure and inflammation. Also glucose metabolism improved in obese participants in speeding the reduction of post-meal blood glucose levels.
Researchers couldn't find compounds in yogurt responsible for the shift in biomarkers or how they act in the body.
"The goal is to identify the components and then get human evidence to support their mechanism of action in the body. That's the direction we are going," Bolling said. "Ultimately, we would like to see these components optimized in foods, particularly for medical situations where it's important to inhibit inflammation through the diet. We think this is a promising approach."

Astronomers Discover Fastest-growing Black Hole in the Universe

"We don't know how this one grew so large, so quickly in the early days of the universe," researcher Christian Wolf said. "The hunt is on to find even faster-growing black holes."Astronomers have identified the fastest-growing black hole in the universe. They found the supermassive black hole in the far reaches of the cosmos, 12 billion light-years away.

The black hole is estimated to boast a mass of 20 billion suns and eat the equivalent of our sun every two days, yielding a growth rate of one percent every one million years.
"This black hole is growing so rapidly that it's shining thousands of times more brightly than an entire galaxy, due to all of the gases it sucks in daily that cause lots of friction and heat," Christian Wolf, an astrophysicist at Australian National University, said in a news release. "If we had this monster sitting at the center of our Milky Way galaxy, it would appear 10 times brighter than a full moon. It would appear as an incredibly bright pin-point star that would almost wash out all of the stars in the sky."
Wolf and his colleagues were able to study the massive black hole with the help of the SkyMapper telescope at the ANU Siding Spring Observatory, which rendered the object in infrared. Because the supermassive black hole is so far away, its light red-shifted during its long journey to Earth.
"As the universe expands, space expands and that stretches the light waves and changes their color," Wolf said.
The European Space Agency's Gaia satellite was also essential to the discovery. Gaia is working its way toward compiling the largest and most precise 3D space catalog in history, measuring tiny motions of millions of celestial objects.
Gaia failed to measure any movement, only extreme luminosity, suggesting the object was faraway and very large -- likely a massive quasar. The spectrograph on the ANU 2.3 meter telescope helped astronomers confirm the supermassive black hole's identity.
Massive quasars like the newly discovered supermassive black hole can help astronomers study the distant universe. Scientists can see shadows in front of the object and its intense energy helps ionize large regions of space, making the universe more transparent.
Astronomers hope the next generation of telescopes will be able to measure the expansion of the universe with the help of supermassive black holes.
A paper describing the newly discovered quasar has already been published online. The paper will soon be formally published in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia.
"We don't know how this one grew so large, so quickly in the early days of the universe," Wolf said. "The hunt is on to find even faster-growing black holes."

Gas Prices Rise to Point of Economic Damage

May 15 (UPI) -- With oil prices rising after President Trump's decision on Iran, gas prices are approaching a psychological threshold for most consumers, analysis shows.
Gas prices could be approaching a point of economic damage, but the worst-case scenario hasn't materialized yet.
Motor club AAA reports the national average retail price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline at $2.88 for Tuesday, about a penny higher than Monday, and six cents, or 2.3 percent, higher than this time last week.
Retail gasoline prices tend to follow movement in crude oil prices. Since U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of the multilateral Iranian nuclear deal last week, the price for Brent crude oil, the global benchmark for the price of oil, is up more than 5.5 percent.
AAA spokeswoman Jeanette Casselano said Trump's decision, which could sideline about 1 million barrels of oil from a market with little spare capacity, and the switch to a summer blend of gasoline, which is more expensive to make, combine to make $3 per gallon gas likely.
"AAA predicts that the national average may reach $3 per gallon this summer, especially if crude oil prices continue to increase," she said in a statement.
The price for Brent crude up was up more than 1 percent in early Tuesday trading.
By market, drivers on the West Coast have the highest prices in the country, with Arizona the only state in the region below $3 per gallon. Federal data show the market is strained because of an increase in demand, with regional inventories of gasoline down nearly 700,000 barrels last week.
The Great Lakes market, meanwhile, is the most volatile with Ohio taking top honors with a 15 cent hike in gas prices from last week. Supplies there were a bit lower last week, but remain 1 million barrels higher than this time last year.
Patrick DeHaan, the senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, told UPI last year that $3 gas might be an economic tipping point. With the U.S. economy on steady ground for now, he said Tuesday that the new threshold might be $4 per gallon, with only minor changes in motorist behavior expected in the current market.
"Hardly any plans will be shelved, but some trimming is likely," he said.
Retail gasoline prices are up more than 60 percent since Trump took office and that could start to impact consumer spending habits. Analysis from Danish investment firm Saxo Bank said, however, that the worst-case scenario on consumer pocketbooks hasn't materialized yet.
"With a November midterm election looming, the Trump administration will do its best to avoid an unwanted spike in gasoline prices and can count on Saudi Arabia as the Kingdom has recently confirmed its commitment to stable oil prices around the threshold of $80 per barrel," Christopher Dembik, the head of macroanalysis at the bank, said in a statement.

Shey Rose Muntah epse Tenguh
Shey Rose Muntah epse Tenguh was laid to rest in Awing village. Speaking during the funeral service Reverend Fritz Teneng Asobo, main Pastor of PC Awing told thousands of mourners that they should keep a-watch for no one knows when the master returns. He reiterated that “the master should not meet you sleeping so keep watching as a committed servant”. To him late Shey Rose Muntah had written her history the day she died and everything about her is referred to in the past now. “Rose might have been on the watch the time her master came calling; now it is for those you who are alive to worry about your lives. Everybody should live a purpose filled life and should try to live each day as an opportunity to do things right”, Reverend Pastor Teneng emphasized.
In his testimony, Shey Rose’s elder brother H.E Shey Jones Yembe (CEMAC Commissioner) described her late sister as a role model. Harping on what happened, he revealed that she died of a simple but dangerous killer disease which is blood clot. To him, her sister lived for others and was noble in her lifestyle. Though it is unusual to question dead, pricked by the pains to have lost someone so dear to the family, Shey Jones Yembe questioned why this dead of her buoyant sister. Barcelona To Play Mamelodi Sundowns in South Africa

Spanish champions, Barcelona will play against South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in Johannesburg on May 16.

Barcelona players

La Liga champions Barcelona will play a friendly against South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in Johannesburg on May 16 as part of celebrations to mark 100 years since the birth of Nelson Mandela, the Spanish club said on Thursday.

The game is being played at the FNB stadium, formerly known as the Soccer City stadium, where Spain won the 2010 World Cup with a team featuring Barca players Gerard Pique, Sergio

Busquets and captain Andres Iniesta, who struck the only goal in their 1-0 win over the Netherlands.

“FC Barcelona has always professed its admiration for Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest figures of the 20th century, who after 27 years in prison went on to become the first democratically elected president of post-apartheid South Africa from 1994 to 1999,” said a statement on the club’s website.

“Mandela represented the struggle for freedom and equality in the country, and played a huge role in unifying the racially divided society. It is precisely this kind of spirit with which FC Barcelona has always been identified.”

Mandela was born on July 18, 1918.

The friendly is sandwiched between Barca’s penultimate Liga game away to Levante on May 13 and their final game at home to Real Sociedad on May 20.

Ernesto Valverde’s side clinched a 25th Liga title on April 29 and the King’s Cup on April 21 and are bidding to become the first team since 1933 to complete a Spanish top flight season without losing a game.

CPJ Urges Kenyan President Not to Sign Into Law Cybercrimes Bill

Uhuru Kenyatta
Nairobi, May 10, 2018 -- The Committee to Protect Journalists today called on Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta not to sign into law a cybercrimes bill that was recently passed by the National Assembly because it will stifle press freedom.
On April 26, 2018, the National Assembly approved the Computer and Cybercrimes Bill, 2017. The bill, among other provisions, criminalizes the publication of false news and stipulates hefty fines and lengthy prison terms for those found guilty of the offense, according to the Hansard, a verbatim published report of debates and proceedings in Kenya's Parliament.
"Kenyan legislators have passed a wide-ranging bill that will criminalize free speech, with journalists and bloggers likely to be among the first victims if it is signed into law," said CPJ Africa Program Coordinator Angela Quintal in New York. "We urge President Kenyatta to refer it back to Parliament so that members can ensure that its provisions are constitutional and do not violate the right to media freedom and free expression."
Clause 12 of the bill provides for a five million Kenyan shilling (US$50,000) fine and/or up to two years in prison for publishing "false" or "fictitious" information. Another clause--introduced during the morning debate on April 26 by National Assembly majority leader Aden Duale--states that anyone found guilty of publishing false information that "is calculated or results in panic, chaos, or violence" or that is "likely to discredit the reputation of a person" is liable for a fine of five million Kenyan shillings and/or up to 10 years in prison, according to the Hansard.
Apollo Mboya, an advocate and former chief executive of the Law Society of Kenya, told CPJ that the provisions on false news would make it easy for authorities to "gag" journalists with whom they do not agree.
He added that the provisions introduced during the debate that punish speech harmful to the "reputation of a person" are similar to a criminal defamation law that was declared unconstitutional by Kenya's High Court in 2017.
Other provisions of the proposed law are also likely to undermine freedom of the press. Clauses in the bill that outlaw unauthorized access and sharing of government data do not allow for a public interest defense to protect whistle-blowers, as noted by Mboya and according to an analysis by global free speech organization Article 19.
State House spokesperson Manoah Esipisu on May 4 told CPJ that the presidency would consider reservations about the bill raised in public statements and/or letters addressed to Kenyatta.
