Mayor Sues Newspaper Publisher for Defamation

FC Junior

The Publisher of The Monitor Newspaper, Amungwa Tanyi Nicodemus will be appearing before the examining magistrate of the Bamenda Court of 1st Instance tomorrow April 12; 2013 to answer two counts brought against him. According to information filtering into our office, the Mayor of Santa council, Atanga Wankie Clement is the complainant.
According to our source Amungwa Tanyi Nicodemus (Publisher of The Monitor) has been sued for on drummed-up charges emanating from a story published in The Monitor in 2010 with caption- Did the mayor of Santa turn down cfa 200 million to step up electricity in Awing? And another investigative story published in 2013 captioned -Illegal exploitation of the Ngemba Forest -The trio trapped in the looting.
Sources say that Amungwa Tanyi received intimidating phone calls from Mayor Wankie who later seek solace in court action. This decision is coming after the arbitrary sanctions melted on media outlets in Cameroon by the National Communication Council. A school of thought holds that with the ax of the Communication falling journalists like trees in the bush, politicians have also dived the other way to stigmatize journalists that criticize their actions.
The problem in Cameroon is that journalists have decried that defamation should be decriminalized yet it has been falling on deaf ears.  It is alleged that the mayor of Santa is claiming that his political image has been tarnished and would like the publisher to prove the veracity of the facts of the story. However, public opinion holds that it would be very detrimental for someone who holds a prestigious position in the SDF like Wankie Clement to antagonize self with journalists especially as elections are in the offing. However one of the most surprising things in Cameroon is that every now and then, politicians always claim that their images have been soiled whereas no one has ever had the time to question the lies and or empty promises they make during campaigns.

Senatorial Challenges: NW CPDM Campaign Team in Financial Crisis

 By Fai Cassian
During the 2011 Presidential campaigns, North West elite staged a fundraising in Bamenda to finance the campaigns, probably because they wanted to flatter President Biya. The fundraising took place under the general supervision of Prime Minister Philemon Yang. Yet classified sources have hinted that North West elite are in the worst of shapes financially. According to information we gathered all Divisional team leaders including members of the regional team were spotted in Bamenda waiting desperately for the central committee to react. We also gathered that PM Yang Philemon who championed the fundraising is very skeptical as to the outcome of the results. One member also opined that he also learnt that PM Yang is refusing to stage the fundraising because if the CPDM list wins in the North West, he is likely to go jobless. Yet the same Philemon Yang is quoted to have told the North West campaign team in an in-camera meeting some weeks ago at Ayaba that during the campaign councilors will be treated like eggs. One CPDM Councilor in Menchum is also alleged to have questioned whether the 100.000 FCFA Philemon Yang is dolling out to councilors is to buy their consciences. “If it is for that then the amount is insignificant”, he said. A school of thought holds that the reason why PM Yang is reluctant in disbursing funds for campaign is clear and pragmatic. That if the CPDM wins in the North West the senators would likely impose one of them to be appointed Prime Minister. More so, some ministers from the North West are also scared that if the list wins and Achidi Achu is voted Speaker Yang will also lost his job due to geopolitical balance. Besides, even some of them with vaulting ministerial ambitions like Awanga Zacharia, Dingha Ignatius and Eno Emma Lafon would likely take up their positions. As in 1991, the Achidi team may go in and upset the table in their favour. It is complicated because if Yang were to be thrown out of government, Prof. Ghoghomu, Director of Cabinet will also be shown the door. Even the long stay of Dr. Fuh Calistus in government is also attributed to his relationship with Yang Philemon. Ama Tutu Muna too may not survive, if it were to happen. It therefore implies that Ama Muna, Fuh Calistus, Moh Sylvester and Ghoghomu will leave the corridors of power. This is thus a bitter pile for the CPDM in the Northwest to swallow. But if the SDF were to win, PM Yang may justify that the SDF is a religion and Paul Biya may likely give an ear to it. But yet, his detractors will also question why he should remain Prime Minister when even with five councilors up, he cannot win an election.

Senatorial Challenges: Minister Fuh Consolidates CDPM Votes in Nkor Council

By Tamngwa Marcel
Minister Fuh Calistus flanked by councilors of Nkor Council
The 25 councilors of Nkor Council in Noni Sub Division of the North West Region have declared that the SDF party will not pass through them to go to the senate. The SDF councilors told Dr. Fuh Calistus Gentry, a member of the North West CPDM Campaign team that it would be suicidal for them to forget the party that voted them to the council to cast their votes for the opposition. The councilors made their position clear today April 10, 2013 in an in-camera with the secretary of state for Mines, Industries and Technological Development. Before leaving Nkor council, Minister Fuh Calistus Gentry told journalists that the reason of his mission to that municipality was to commune with his brothers and sisters, share ideas as well as strategize for the April 14, 2013 senatorial elections. Minister Fuh Calistus also added that his trip to Nkor Council is also due to the fact that the people of Noni and Misaje people share cultural values, which further strengthen their union. He said he is leaving Nkor Council full of optimism and pride due to the commitment of the councilors. Dr. Fuh Calistus told the Press that he was delighted that there is peace, serenity and unity among the CPDM councilors of Nkor Council.
On his part, the Section President of the CPDM, Forgwei Alfred added that Nkor Council will give it all to the CPDM party which they have stood by for many years today. He also announced a 100% vote for the CPDM senatorial list come April 14, 2013. On the other hand the Mayor Nkor Council Shey Michael Kume said that the councilors will vote on party lines adding that the CPDM list is the best in the region. Shey Michael Kume said that if they vote against the party, it would mean that they are handing over the council to the opposition. He said councilors are aware of the challenges ahead and know very well that they were voted into the council as flag bearers of the CPDM. “We cannot go against the will of the people who voted us into the council. They voted us as flag bearers of the CPDM and so it but normal for us to keep the flag flying by defending the interest of the people who voted us”, he concluded.
Contrary to hearsay that the Nkor council is in factions, the mayor castigated it as baseless rumours and added that even if they are some internal problems, those ones would be shift aside for party discipline to rein. Shey Michael Kume said Nkor Council is very lucky that all the 25 councilors are intact. “We have had no death and I think it is a blessing that we will all have the privilege to choose the ever first senators of this country”. This he added is but a pride for the CPDM and the people who voted them to represent them at the council.

CPJ: Nigeria police harass Leadership journalists over memo

Lagos, Nigeria, April 10, 2013--Nigerian police should stop harassing the staff of leading independent daily Leadership over a story critical of President Goodluck Jonathan, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.
Lagos, Nigeria, April 10, 2013--Nigerian police should stop harassing the staff of leading independent daily Leadership over a story critical of President Goodluck Jonathan, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today.
On Monday, police in the capital Abuja summoned four Leadership journalists for questioning over an April 3 story entitled "Outrage Trails Presidential Directive on Tinubu, APC," according to the newspaper. The story reported on public criticism of Jonathan following Leadership's publication a day earlier of a purported presidential memorandum in which Jonathan allegedly laid out plans to increase petrol prices and sabotage a merger of opposition political parties ahead of the 2015 elections by targeting their leaders' business interests.
In a press statement, the presidential State House called the document "fictitious, designed to mislead the public, discredit the person and office of President Goodluck Jonathan, and cause disaffection within the polity," according to news reports.
Managing Editor Chuks Ohuegbe and Chinyere Fred-Adegbulugbe, human resources director and a former editor, were released on Monday after more than nine hours of interrogation over the sources of the document, Azubuike Ishiekwene, Leadership Newspapers Group managing director, told CPJ. However, police held news editor Tony Amokeodo and political reporter Chibuzor Ukaibe incommunicado overnight, demanding they produce the source of the story. They were released late Tuesday on condition they report to police headquarters every day at 10 a.m.
"Nigerian police efforts to intimidate journalists of Leadership newspaper into revealing the source of a document, which the government has dismissed as fake, is a heavy-handed abuse of power unacceptable in a democracy," said CPJ Africa Advocacy Coordinator Mohamed Keita from New York. "We call on Nigerian police to halt harassment of Leadership."
Ishiekwene said the newspaper group considered the conditions of the journalists' release "obnoxious and unacceptable" and planned to defy the order that the journalists report to police each day.
Police had previously visited the newspaper's Abuja office three times demanding to see the journalists who wrote the story on the presidential memo, Leadership reported.  Media and rights groups condemned the journalists' arrest, according to news reports. In a statement sent to CPJ, Ishiekwene said he believed police were acting on direct orders from Jonathan. Neither police spokesman Frank Mba nor presidential spokesman Doyin Okupe responded to CPJ's calls and text messages.
Ugo Udoji, the journalists' lawyer, told CPJ he has filed a court process against the police for violating the constitutional rights of the journalists by detaining them without access to their families or their lawyer.

Senatorial vote & results same day avoids Rigging!

By Teche Nyamusa (Parliamentary Aspirant for Mbengwi Central)
Elections rigging and manipulation of the April 14, 2013 senatorial elections of the Republic of Cameroon will be reduced if the results are declared same day as voting.
Cameroon has a record of elections manipulations by the ruling CPDM party which record is as old as the existence of the state. Cameroon National Union (CNU) is the former name of the ruling Cameroon People Democratic Movement (CPDM). From independence more than 50years ago, only two head of states have ruled - the tyrannical reigns of Ahmadou Ahidjo and incumbent Biya Paul. Ahidjo ruled during the one party (CNU) era. In 1984, he hand picked Biya his Prime minister and made president of Cameroon. Biya continued the one party reign till the early 1990s when he was forced to accept multiparty practice. His vehement arguments against multiparty democracy were overcome by the Cameroon people and global quest for effective democracy. From 1990s till date, many elections have been organized and nearly all rigged by the Biya government in favor of CPDM. Biya is both president of Cameroon and national president of the CPDM. Cameroonians in their great majority and international elections observers have condemned Biya’s endemic electoral fraud. But like typical dictators, President Biya /CPDM are surviving by guns and the illegal use of the state treasury – this weapon history tells us, however, is not permanent!
In Cameroon election results are ridiculously over delayed (for weeks if not months) after the Polls - to ensure doctoring - the powers that be here maliciously point to a large sized country with a huge population. Meanwhile this small triangle-shaped state has only a population of circa 20 millions
In democracies with population counting several tens or hundreds of millions, (for example France, Nigeria, USA) elections results are given same day even as voting is in progress. In Cameroon, the press is forbidden from giving any results before government’s say. Political debates on radio and TV are curiously banned during campaigns - what a country, democracy!
Here, the Electoral College now for the upper house of the parliament (the senate) is local councillors.  This group of people is not on any salary like obtained in well meaning states -all councillors irrespective of party are expected to sanction such inconsequential inconsiderate regime. In Cameroon, election results are delayed to facilitate doctoring. During the proclamation of the controversial 2011 presidential elections delayed-results, the Supreme Court Judge Alexis Mouelle took about one full day to read the bare results. The final proclamation was tailored and delivered only about midnight when most anxious Cameroonians had been over taken by sleep. And of course Biya won! The mal governance and injustice here put the country in regular turmoil with consequent uprising and or destruction which include the struggle for Cameroon independence by UPC party, the early 1990s SDF revolt, the February 2008 hunger and fuel strike. Cameroonians have long lost trust in the CPDM.
Could Biya attempt to reduce the annoyance in Cameroonians by ensuring a level play ground in all competitions? Can these senatorial polls results be published same day as voting? After all it is voting only by councillors and the exercise is in divisional capitals which are accessible to the regional capitals! Above all, communication gadgets like phones and internet computers are available every where to give instant results!
The CPDM has many councillors from the pro regime fraud of the 2007 municipal elections yet she is afraid of possible sanctions from them (councillors) because of the system jungle administration.

Philemon Yang Gives VIP Treatment to CPDM Councilors, Snobs Traditional Rulers

 By Fai Cassian Ndi
Prime Minister Philemon Yang met CPDM councilors of Donga Mantung in strict intimacy as part of the campaign strategy to woo voters to respect party discipline. The meeting that took place at the Nkambe Community Hall on April 7, 2013 brought together CPDM councilors of Nwa, Misaje and Ako council respectively. Also present during the meeting were some three councilors who decamped from the Nkambe council to join the CPDM. Philemon Yang who was flanked by some members of the CPDM senatorial campaign team among them Regina Mundi, Ghoghomu Paul, Fon Teche Njei, Akwa Patrick, Prof. Lantum and others.  It is alleged that during the meeting Prime Minister Philemon Yang told CPDM councilors to vote with their free consciences. Yet Philemon Yang reminded them that on April 14, all CPDM councilors in Donga Mantung should vote along party lines.
According to what we gathered one of the key speakers Regina Mundi told CPDM councilors that the senatorial election will give them the opportunity portray their trust in the CPDM. Regina Mundi, CPDM Vice campaign team leader urged councilors to remain loyal to the ideals of the new deal of President Biya because it is their votes that will determine the future of the party. She said North West senatorial candidates were selected based on their aptitudes and that the councilors should avoid to fall into the dirty traps of the SDF.
Speaking to the over 90 Cpdm councilors gathered at the Nkambe Community hall after the departure of the Prime Minister Dr Fuh Calistus Gentry, Divisional Campaign Team leader for Donga Mantung, said Donga Mantung councilors occupied a central place in the political life of the Region, reason why the Prime Minister took upon himself to personally come and see them. He stressed that the financial support brought along by the P.M  was  proof that President Paul Biya and the Central Committee relied on the efforts and votes of Donga Mantung councilors to win a comfortable majority. He told them that the SDF was becoming a thing of the past in Donga Mantung and that the Cpdm would give Ni John Fru Ndi and his SDF a run for their money during this senatorial in the Division. On his part, MP for Nwa, Hon, Genesis Mbucksek expressed surprise that the Sdf that had all along claimed it was a transparent party is today going round and proposing financial benefits to Cpdm councilors to vote the SDF list.
Dr. Calistus used the opportunity to present to the electorate and party officials the cpdm senatorial candidate for Donga Mantung. Here is the Profile of Prof. Jikong Stephen Yeriwa, the CDPM Senatorial Candidate for Donga Mantung Division as presented by Dr. Fuh Calistus

Yang Snobs Traditional Rulers
Traditional rulers who travelled from Ako, Misaje and Nwa to receive the Prime Minister left Nkambe yesterday more confused than when they were going. There was nervousness at the Nkambe Fons palace when the over 40 traditional rulers got information that due to tide schedule, Prime Minister Philemon Yang has already left Nkambe after the meeting with councilors. One traditional ruler from Ako told this reporter that it is unfortunate that the Prime Minister has always dribbled them. “It is really an unfortunate situation. In fact we the traditional rulers are disappointed”, he said. Even though it is alleged Yang sent a package to the fons to calm flaring tempers, yet we gathered that the fons are aghast. The fons are even angry that PM Yang dolled out 100.000 FCFA to each councilors whereas they (fons) were sent chicken feed as transport back to their villages after spending two days in Nkambe.

Fuh Calistus Gentry Woos CPDM Councilors of Misaje, Ako

 By FC Junior
The CPDM Divisional Campaign team headed by Dr. Fuh Calistus Gentry met councilors of the Misaje and Ako councils in two separate gathering to woo for their votes ahead of the April 14, senatorial elections.
Addressing CPDM councilors yesterday April 7, 2013 in Ako, Dr. Fuh Calistus Gentry said that the upcoming senatorial elections would be a test and commitment in the ideals of the ruling CDPM. “It is not only about voting senators but about erasing the stigma that the SDF has inflicted on the North West Region for the past twenty years”. He told councilors that voting the SDF would mean making a wrong choice. “If you vote a wrong side, you are indirectly giving your positions as councilors to them”, he reminded councilors. Dr. Calistus said that if today Fru Ndi only wants to visit Ako and Misaje, it is because they are shinning. “If you have remained as slaves under the SDF, nobody would have known you”.
Voting for the SDF Dr. Calistus Gentry said implies that the councilors have thrown their destiny to the dogs. He however called on all the CPDM councilors to be conscious of the fact that by voting the CPDM, they are confirming their unalloyed support to President Biya.
Presenting the CPDM senatorial candidate for Donga Mantung, Prof. Jikong Stephen to the people of Ako, Dr. Calistus Gentry described him as someone who has done a lot for the country. He said the senate is for people who have the aptitude to vote good laws and not hand-picked individuals who are selected based on personal sentiments. He also ushered in the fons of Ako sub Division to support the CPDM senatorial list led by Rt. Hon. Achidi Achu.
The CPDM senatorial candidate for Donga Mantung Division, Prof. Jikong Stephen said all his life he has worked for the people but had never ever contested in any elections. He also added that it’s pathetic that Ni John Fru who once wanted to rule this country was defeated so badly that he has reduced himself to the level of contesting elections with him.  He emphasized that educationally that person cannot be his student.
On his part, the Section President for Donga Mantung III, Ako, Hon. Ntoi Joseph called on CPDM councilors to remain loyal to the party. He told the senatorial aspirants that as they are on their knees begging for vote, they should make sure that when elected, they should lobby for Ako to benefit from more development projects.
Misaje Fons, Councilors Declare for CPDM
The meeting with councilors of Misaje Council also registered the massive attendance of traditional rulers. In an open declaration, the fons said they were behind the CPDM. Fon Nkei John II of Akweto, President of Misaje Fons Union declared that all traditional rulers will make sure that all the 25 councilors vote for the CPDM.
Speaking earlier, Dr. Fuh Calistus told councilors that even if his own son is candidate on the opposite side, he would campaign against him. He said that even though there are claims that the SDF candidate is from Misaje, she has nothing to do with them.
Dr. Calistus said he stands as an elite of Misaje to declare that the CPDM will bring development more than any other. He called on the councilors to understand that even in Parliament; MPs usually cast their votes based on party lines and not on personal sentiments. Misaje, councilors he said should not be different.
Minister Fuh Calistus asked the councilors whether the opposition has ever taken up machetes to ask for the tarring of the ring road. “They only take on machetes when it concerns their personal interests”, he noted. “The SDF is finished in Nkambe and it would be unfortunate if the reverse is to happen in Misaje” he reminded the councilors. “Let it be that Fru Ndi goes to the senate that the President pitied and appointed him and not that we voted him”. As earlier hinted, councilors of Nwa Council it has been confirmed that they will be given a three-days VIP treatment at a certain home in Taku while those of Misaje will be lodged at Mbiyeh at Ngafeeson's home. More so, the councilors of Ako who were to be lodged and feed at Hon JK Ntoi's home in Ako will be transported to Nkambe. A source hinted that the councilors of Ako will be lodged at Gerard Ngala's residence. Further more, they will move in a group to the polling station on April 14, 2013. However, public opinion is aghast that by so doing the principles of democracy are not respected, yet CPDM bigwigs say it is about party discipline.
