Cameroon Telecommunications (CAMTEL) has taken a decisive step to redefine its role in the nation’s digital landscape by signing a three-year Master Service Agreement with Ethio Telecom on December 4 in YaoundĂ©. The deal with one of Africa’s largest state-owned telecom operators marks a turning point in CAMTEL’s ambition to evolve from a traditional connectivity provider into a central driver of Cameroon’s digital transformation.
CAMTEL’s Director General, Judith Yaah Sunday, hailed the agreement as a bold affirmation of Africa’s responsibility to shape its own digital future. She emphasized that partnering with Ethio Telecom—renowned for its strategic discipline and strong performance—will accelerate CAMTEL’s pursuit of operational excellence and home-grown innovation.
The accord establishes a comprehensive framework to modernize CAMTEL’s operations, diversify its service portfolio, and strengthen Cameroon’s digital ecosystem. Key initiatives include:
- Expanding “Blue Money”, CAMTEL’s electronic payment system, to advance financial inclusion.
- Developing a secure Government Cloud platform to support the digitalization of public services and safeguard national data.
- Upgrading network technologies, with rapid deployment of 4G, 5G, and emerging systems.
- Driving internal reforms to boost organizational efficiency and enhance customer service.
Ethio Telecom’s Director General, Frehiwot Tamiru, endorsed the partnership’s holistic approach, noting that true relevance in today’s telecom sector requires internal digital transformation alongside infrastructure expansion. She affirmed Ethio Telecom’s commitment to sharing its modernization expertise and contributing directly to Cameroon’s economic growth.
