Cameroon’s Minister of Communication,
Issa Tchiroma Bakary has declared that Former Minister of State, Minister of
Territorial Administration Marafa Hamidou Yaya is not a political prisoner.
Minister Tchiroma made that statement on Friday, 16th July 2016 in Press
briefing with local and International media. During the briefing Tchiroma
debunked the report recently published by the UN working group on arbitrary
detention. The report had indicated that Marafa was a political prisoner and
called for his immediate release from detention. Communication Minister in
reaction to the report said that Marafa Hamidou Yaya is not a political prisoner
as indicated by the report but an ordinary prisoner who was found guilty and
sentenced for embezzling state funds. He
continued that the letter by Marafa to the UN working group as well as the
group’s report should therefore be doubted. Marafa, the Minister of
communication added is serving a 20-year jail term as an ordinary prisoner and
not politician.
