6 WhatsApp Scams You Must Avoid

If you a big fan of the instant messaging service, WhatsApp, then these are certain scams you must watch out for.

Created in 2009 as an alternative to text messaging, WhatsApp is today one of the world’s most popular instant messaging services with more than one billion users in 180 countries. According to a May 2016 report from a research firm, SimilarWeb, WhatsApp is the top chat app in 109 countries, which represents 58 per cent of the 187 countries covered in the survey. Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 to make a bigger play in the rapidly growing messaging market, along with its own Messenger platform. At the time the deal was announced, WhatsApp had 450 million users worldwide.

Considering the popularity and widespread usage of WhatsApp, even among the older generations in countries such as Nigeria, it is no surprise that the attention of hackers and other unscrupulous individuals have shifted to the medium in a bid to exploit loopholes that could be used to swindle unsuspecting users of their money or other sensitive information.

Here are six WhatsApp scams you should look out for:

1. WhatsApp Gold

The offer of an upgrade to WhatsApp Gold is a fraud that starts with a message via social networks in which WhatsApp users are invited to click on a link to update their app to the inexistent Oro version (Gold version), which offers the users a suite of new and exclusive features.  According to the research and development unit of Yudala, the link takes the user to a web page where, if he wants to use these improvements, he has to give his phone number. Interestingly, users who go on to give their number will be subscribed to a premium SMS service: each text message that you receive will cost you just a meagre sum.

Global attention was initially drawn to the existence of this scam by the Spanish National Police and Civil Guard when it reported the existence of an expensive scam costing users £36 per month. Since then, the scam has also been reported in a number of countries.

It is important to point out that there is only one version of WhatsApp; so caution is the watch-word should you get a similar invitation to upgrade to WhatsApp Gold.

2. WhatsApp Plus

According to the research and development unit of Yudala, this is another scam perpetrated by faceless individuals seeking to cash in on the ubiquitous usage of WhatsApp. WhatsApp Plus claims to let users send pictures, videos and music files of an unlimited size. This is in addition to allowing subscribers use WhatsApp with more than one number, a feature that is highly sought after by many users of the app. However, WhatsApp Plus is not associated with WhatsApp and the Facebook-owned service bans users who have also downloaded the fake app onto their device. A bold disclaimer was recently issued by WhatsApp to alert users to the existence of the fake app.

“WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorised by WhatsApp. WhatsApp Plus contains source code which WhatsApp cannot guarantee as safe and that your private information is potentially being passed to third parties without your knowledge or authorisation,” the statement said.

And to demonstrate its stance, WhatsApp blocks users that have downloaded the unsolicited version of the app, with users having to wait an additional 24 hours to get the ban lifted after deleting the fake app.

3. WhatsApp browser fraud

With the launch of WhatsApp’s browser platform, hackers created a number of similar-looking fraudulent websites to gain access to the sensitive data and bank details of unsuspecting users. Some of the tactics employed by these fraudulent websites include requesting users to download a seemingly harmless application onto their computers, which, in actuality, is a malicious software that allows the cybercriminals access to confidential information such as banking information. Another very popular strategy is to request the phone number of the unknowing users and then subscribe them to downloading premium services that charge special rates.

To avoid falling a victim, it is pertinent to bear in mind that there is only one browser version of WhatsApp, which is absolutely free. Most importantly, you do not have to download anything to your computer to use it.

4. WhatsApp video calling invite

In late 2016, WhatsApp rolled out video-calling feature for Android, iOS and Windows users. The feature, which was long anticipated, was made available for downloads via update available to all users. However, the rollout of this popular feature has created new opportunities for scammers who circulate malicious links inviting people to download video-calling. Shortly after the video-calling feature was introduced on November 15, 2016, WhatsApp users began receiving an invitation link for it. Once the user clicks on the given link, he is directed to a webpage to enable the new feature. The spam message reads, “You’re invited to try WhatsApp Video Calling feature. Only people with the invitation can enable this feature.”  And once a user clicks on the link, it redirects to a website that has been designed to look believable.

Once a gullible user clicks on the ‘enable’ tab, he/she is immediately directed to a new page that requires user verification. You would then be asked to share and invite four other friends to enable this feature through the same link. Though the entire page and the process look credible, mere clicking on this link can expose you to spammers, making you extremely vulnerable to hacking.

Please note that the correct way to enable video calling feature is to update your WhatsApp app through your Google Playstore or Apple Store. As soon as it is updated, the feature will be automatically enabled.

5. Fake WhatsApp voicemail

This is another scam that arose with the introduction of voice calls on WhatsApp. However, this scam, often perpetrated via email, does not seek to take advantage of the voice-calling feature but aims to trap unsuspecting users with the introduction of a related service. The fake WhatsApp Voicemail fraud starts when a user receives an email, notifying him of an unread voice message in the non-existent WhatsApp voicemail. When the user clicks on the large “Autoplay” button that supposedly allows you hear the message, there is no message. Instead, a malicious software introduced by a hacker is downloaded on the device. This is usually the gateway for the scammers to compromise or gain access to the user’s bank details, credit card information and other personal data. This approach was recently used by a Canadian pharmacy spam website in trying to sell its fake pharmaceutical products. The perpetrators were of the view that disguising their spam message as something completely unrelated to pharmaceutical products would help it bypass spam filters as well as trick recipients into clicking the link and visiting the site.

The best way to remain protected from this particular scam is to remember that there is presently no WhatsApp voicemail.

6. WhatsApp Spy

Despite the existence of WhatsSpy Public, an application invented by Dutch developer, Maikel Zweerink, that allows you to spy on your WhatsApp contacts by tracking the user’s online status, last time of connection and any changes made to profile photos, there is another scam app that claims to go one step ahead by offering a service that allows anyone to read the conversations of others. Known as WhatsSpy, this is a fraud in which ignorant users are tricked into downloading an app, through which malicious software are introduced into the user’s device. Understandably, a number of individuals will go to great lengths to be able to read the conversations of others, especially as a means of keeping tabs on cheating spouses or for other similar purposes. This has contributed in no small measure to many falling victim to the WhatsSpy scam.

To reiterate the fact, WhatsApp messages are encrypted and as such, you cannot remotely read other people’s conversations. WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption ensures only you and the person you’re communicating with can read what is sent and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp. Your messages are secured with a lock and only the recipient and you have the special key needed to unlock and read your message. For added protection, every message you send has a unique lock and key. All of this happens automatically: no need to turn on settings or set up special secret chats to secure your messages.

The existence of end-to-end encryption has remained one of the major factors that have contributed to the growing popularity of the Facebook-owned service.

For the Couples: Four Very Important Options to Explore When Genotype Gets in the Way

Couples who are AS and SS, and are attempting to let go of their marriage for fear of having children born with sickle cell anemia, will find this article very helpful.

File photo

Here are four important options for couples who are AS and SS and are trying to forego the thought of marriage for fear of having children born with the SS genotype known as sickle cell anemia.

1. Bone marrow transplant

Stem cells in the bone marrow are responsible for the production of red blood cells.
The bone marrow transplant is a procedure that infuses healthy stem cells into the body to replace damaged or infected bone marrow.
A transplant would mean that the affected party would no longer produce sickle-shaped red blood cells so the couple can give procreation a shot without any fear.

2. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis

Preimplantation genetic testing is a technique used to identify genetic defects in embryos created through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) before pregnancy.
The embryos and chromosomes would be screened, and only those free of the SS genotype would be transferred to the uterus for implantation.

3. Surrogacy

This is when a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby in order to give someone who cannot have children.
For couples with genotype incompatibility challenges, a surrogate may be worth the investment.

4. Adoption

Adoption is perhaps the most used alternative by couples who have issues with childbearing.
Couples – who have tried several procedures in futility or don’t have so much money yet want to start a family – can assume parenting of another child.

July 5 (UPI) -- John Cena made his return to WWE Tuesday during a special July 4th edition of Smackdown Live.
Cena who has been missing in action since April when he became engaged to his girlfriend Nikki Bella at WrestleMania, kicked off Smackdown Live with a passionate speech in which he declared himself a free agent able to take on competitors from both Raw and Smackdown.
The 16-time World Heavyweight Champion then listed top WWE Superstars that he would like to face in the ring including AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, United States Champion Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, WWE Champion Jinder Mahal, Seth Rollins, Samoa Joe, Universal Champion Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns.
Cena's address was cut short by a returning Rusev, who had yet to appear on Smackdown Live following the Superstar Shake-Up in April. Rusev, with a Bulgarian flag in hand, then proceeded to degrade Cena and the United States.
Never one to back down from a fight, Cena challenged Rusev to a Flag Match to take place that night which the Bulgarian Brute declined claiming that he would fight Cena on his time. WWE announced that the Flag Match would take place at the next Smackdown pay-per-view event, Battleground on July 23.
Also on Smackdown Live, Styles won a special Independence Day Battle Royal to become the No. 1 contender for Owens' United States Championship. Key moments from the bout included Mojo Roawley eliminating his own Hype Bros tag team partner Zack Ryder and the showdown between the final three contestants, Styles, Sami Zayn and Tye Dillinger.
After Zayn threw Dillinger out of the ring, The Underdog from the Underground was eliminated by Styles who delivered a Pele Kick for the victory. The Phenomenal One's celebration was cut short by Owens who rushed to the ring and attacked Styles from behind.
Styles was able to recover, however, and fight off the self-proclaimed New Face of America who quickly exited the ring. Styles then held up the United States Championship in celebration.
Other highlights from Smackdown Live included Styles defeating Chad Gable to gain entry into the Battle Royal; Ms. Money in the Bank Carmella and her side-piece James Ellsworth having a Carmellabration that was cut short by Smackdown general manager Daniel Bryan who proceeded to bar Ellsworth from the arena, fine him $10,000 and suspend him without pay for 30 days; Smackdown Women's Champion Naomi defeating Lana; Baron Corbin attacking Nakamura backstage; Orton getting disqualified against Aiden English before verbally sparring with Mahal; and The New Day taking on Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Usos in a rap battle hosted by Wale.

Malaysia Airlines MH17 Case to be Prosecuted in Netherlands

Dutch investigators collect debris from Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which crashed on July 16, 2014, killing all 298 aboard. An investigative team blamed a missile shot from rebel-controlled Ukraine for the crash, and Wednesday it was announced that suspects will be prosecuted in a Dutch court. July 5 (UPI) -- The Dutch Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that suspects in the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 will be prosecuted in a Dutch court.
An international criminal investigation determined in 2016 that a missile, fired from separatist-controlled territory in eastern Ukraine, struck the plane as it flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in July 2014. Russia disputed the findings, saying the missile was fired from a Ukrainian-controlled area.
The crash killed all 298 people, from 17 countries, aboard the plane.
The ministry announcement on behalf of the countries involved in the investigation -- Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine -- did not include the names of suspects.
"The [Joint Investigation Team] countries have now decided that the suspects should be prosecuted in the Netherlands, a process that will be rooted in ongoing international cooperation and support. This means that the team's cooperation will continue into the prosecution phase. Thanks to the MH17-treaty with Ukraine it will be possible for the prosecution to cover all the victims," the statement by the Netherlands Foreign Ministry said.
Investigators building the criminal case said that about 100 people were involved in the launch of the missile.

Meet the "Forest Man Who Has Been Planting a Tree Every Day for the Past 48 Years

An old man has been planting trees every single day for the past 48 years, taking up the title of 'Forest Man'.
Abdul Samad Sheikh

They say that one man can’t make a difference, but Abdul Samad Sheikh, a 60-year-old rickshaw driver from Bangladesh, is living proof that small contributions over a long period of time can mean very much.
He has planted at least one tree every day since he was 12-years-old, which means that he has so far planted a small forest of over 17,500 trees. Imagine if everyone followed his example.
Abdul Samad Sheikh, fondly known as “Tree Samad” in his native town of Faridpur, central Bangadesh, has worked as a rickshaw driver for most of his life. The modest job earns him about 100 taka ($1.25) per day, which is barely enough to put food on the table for his family, but he somehow manages to also buy at least one tree from the Faridpur Horticulture Centre, every day. He considers it his duty to the world, and claims he wouldn’t be able to sleep at night if he didn’t plant a tree that day.
“For the whole night I cannot sleep if I have not planted a tree,” Abdul told The Daily Star. “I’ve been doing that since I was twelve years old. Mostly I plant them on government land so nobody can cut them down later. I also water them, and if I see anyone cutting a tree I protest it and scold them. I love all creatures, animals too, but especially trees.”

Samad, his wife Jorna, and four of their children live in in two modest huts, on a piece of land that belongs to the Faridpur deputy commissioner’s office. They have no land of their own, and sometimes his meager earnings are not enough to cover the family’s needs, but he always prioritizes his daily tree purchase. Jorna sometimes scolds him for it, but he doesn’t care.
“His income isn’t great, and he has to cover the day-to-day needs for our family,” Abdul’s wife says. “Sometimes I forbid him to plant trees but he doesn’t listen. Samad’s love for trees is unstoppable.”
“I’ve never told my father not to plant trees, he does a good thing for society,” Abdul’s 30-year-old son, Kutub Uddin, adds.
Abdul Samad Sheikh’s neighbors all know about his daily habit, and some remember seeing him plant trees ever since he was a little boy. In a video posted by The Daily Star, they point to several large trees planted by him decades ago, and express their respect and admiration for his dedication.
“Samad is a model citizen of our community," local man, Abul Kalam Howlader, says. “To see his good work truly inspires me.”
“It’s not only the trees,” Abdul’s neighbor, Sakandar Ali, adds. “Samad is a very helpful man. One can ask of him anything and he will do his best to help without reservation. His is that rare type of personality that is so much needed in our society.”

60-year-old Sheikh says he started planting trees 48 years ago, because God told him to. He’s been doing it every day since, which means that he has single-handedly planted a whopping 17,532 trees.
For his efforts, Abdul Samad Sheikh was recently honored by The Daily Star, and awarded a 100,000 taka ($1,253) check to help him build a better home for his family. In his acceptance speech, the inspirational “nature guardian” asked everyone to follow his example, and protect the environment.
“I can’t do it alone, I need the help of you all,” Abdul said.

Attempt to Declare Saraki Acting President of Nigeria Flops at Senate

An attempt by lawmakers of the Nigerian Senate to install the Senate President, Bukola Saraki as the Acting President, where both Buhari and Osinabjo were not in the country failed at the National Assembly.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki

A mild drama occurred on the floor of the Senate, on Tuesday, when a point of order was raised, that the Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki was the Acting President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, DailyPost reports.
The Senate, upon resumption from its 3 weeks break, received a communication from Professor Yemi Osinbajo, the Acting President of Nigeria, seeking the confirmation of Lanre Gbajabiamila, as the Director General of National Lottery Regulatory Commission.
The lawmakers, however, subjected the letter to deliberations, owing to the fact that the Acting President, had earlier reportedly said the Senate had no power to confirm nominees.
Senator Eyinanya Abaribe (Abia South), had raised a motion that the country had no President or Acting President at the moment, adding that, President Muhammadu Buhari and Professor Yemi Osinbajo were neither in the country, as at the time.
This was greeted with a counter point, coming through order 53 rule 4 of the Senate standing rules, by Senator Kabiru Marafa (Zamfara Central).
Marafa who cited relevant sections of the Nigerian constitution, said, “if the President is not around, the Vice President should act, and if the Vice President is not around, the Senate President, who is the number 3 citizen should become acting President.”
The Senate President, however, didn’t allow any seconder or more comments, even when Senators were agitating to support the motion. He quickly ruled Senator Marafa “out of order.”

Death of Bishop of Bafia: Judicial Inquiry Report Contradicts the Church

The preliminary judicial inquiry report into the suspicious death of the Bishop of Bafia, Jean Marie Benoit Bala has debunked allege claims earlier pronounced by the Catholic Episcopal Conference that the late prelate was assassinated. In a Press Release issued today July 4, 2017, the Procureur General at the Centre Court of Appeal has revealed that after close examination by local medical doctors, and later by Interpol experts they found no traces of violence on the body of the deceased.  Here below is the Press Release

 Press Release

The Procureur General at the Centre Court of Appeal wishes to inform the public that the judicial inquiry into the suspicious death of Mgr Jean Marie Benoit Bala, Bishop of the Diocese of Bafia, is effectively continuing.

Post-Morten examinations were carried out on the mortal remains of the Bishop of Bafia. After initial examination by two teams of local medical doctors on 2 and 22 June 2017, the decision was taken to the resort to international expertise through INTERPOL. The forensic medical doctors sent by INTERPOL for that purpose, namely Professor Michael TSOKOS, Director of the Berlin Institute of Forensic Medicine in Germany, and Doctor Mark MULDER, Coordinator of the Disaster Victim Identification Unit of INTERPOL, arrived Cameroon on 29 June 2017. After close examination, they noticed the absence of any traces of violence on the body of the deceased and concluded; in this light that drowning was the most probable cause of the Bishop’s death.

A Man Disappeared in Brazil and Left behind 14 Books Full of Encrypted Hand-Written Text

After keeping his room locked for a month, Bruno Borges disappears and leaves it full of encrypted language and symbols all over the walls, along with 14 handwritten books (encrypted as well) and a statue of Giordano Bruno, italian Dominican philosopher worth approximately $2500 (R$7.000).
The books were impecable in symmetry and aligning. His family didn’t know about the statue, he was alone when it was delivered. It stands on a symbol that resembles Fullmetal Alchemist transmutation circle.

He was constantly asking people to invest in a project he had without telling them what it was all about.

He just told his mother he was writing 14 books that would change humanity in a good way.

After getting $6500 (R$20.000) from his cousin, he was able to finish his project. He disappeared last monday, 27.

Schizophrenia, obsession, and isolation are of course our first conclusions here. Although according to his mother he was outstandingly smart and started reading piles of books of all kinds including Shakespeare and the Bible when he was a teenager.
Well, who knows. I don’t believe in occultism or alchemy, but in boring or frustrating times who doesn’t like a little bit of mystery?!

Former Chelsea Captain Terry Signs for Aston Villa

After being released by Chelsea, former England captain John Terry has signed for Aston Villa on Monday.

Former Chelsea and England captain John Terry has joined Championship side Aston Villa, the club's owner said on Monday.
"Welcome JT to Birmingham city...Aston Villa!@AVFCOfficial Announcement shortly!," Tony Xia posted on Twitter in a sideways dig at the club's cross-city rivals, Birmingham City, who had also sought to sign the 36-year-old centre-half.
Terry became a free agent at the weekend after 22 years at Stamford Bridge where he played his entire career in the Premier League.
The Birmingham Mail and other papers reported Terry had signed a one-year deal and already flown to Villa's pre-season training camp in the Algarve to meet his new teammates.
He made his final appearance for the champions in May, leaving to a guard of honour 26 minutes into the game to correspond with his shirt number.
But, despite interest from West Bromwich Albion, Stoke City and Bournemouth, he has been persuaded to drop down to England's second tier by Villa manager Steve Bruce.
Villa are former European Cup holders who were relegated from the Premier League in 2016. Despite spending heavily under Chinese owner Xia, they failed to gain instant promotion and finished a disappointing 13th last season.

To Encourage Mass Attendance, Priest Gives Free Alcohol, Money to the Congregation

In a determined bid to boost Mass attendance, a priest of the church of Saint Martin in Trignano, commences the sharing of free alcohol to adults and crisps to children.
A priest in a rural village of central Italy has started offering free alcohol to adults and crisps to children in a bid to boost Mass attendance, as part of a supermarket-style loyalty programme.

In a tongue-in-cheek post on his Facebook profile, Father Gianfranco Formenton of the church of Saint Martin in Trignano, a hamlet of 1,500 near the Umbrian town of Spoleto, announced that the rewards scheme would apply from July 2.

Father Formenton offered prosecco from his home region of Veneto and crisps mixed with Communion wafers as snacks, but only to owners of a “Mass Attendance Card.”

He also stressed that the church premises are air-conditioned and available for hire for birthdays and other events.

In an interview with Il Messaggero newspaper, which first reported on the unusual initiative on Sunday, Father Formenton said the idea was “born as a game, thought up with the youth members of the parish and mainly targeted towards them.”

“Every Sunday, at the end of Mass, I put a stamp on the card, to certify [the owner’s] attendance.

“It’s just a game, but it helps to remind everybody that faith is a commitment and, as such, it does not go on holiday,” Formenton said.
