Lesson from Nigeria: Female Student Develops Cure for Breast Cancer

The World Bank Education Director, Dr Jaime Saavedra Chanduvi has revealed that a major breakthrough in the cure for cancer might have been found by a female scientist.

Female student of the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, Sandra Musujusu

A female student of the African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, Sandra Musujusu, has made a scientific breakthrough after developing an alternative treatment for breast cancer.
Accoriding to TribuneOnline the scientific breakthrough might lead to a lasting solution in the treatment of breast cancer prevalent among women world over.
This was made known on Tuesday in Abuja when the World Bank Education Director, Dr Jaime Saavedra Chanduvi with his team visited the University as part of his assessment tour of the 10 African Centres of Excellence (ACE) centres.
The World Bank has committed about $10 billion for the ACE project in Nigeria, as part of efforts to encourage conduct of cutting-edge research and specialisation of the beneficiaries institutions in specific development problems faced in Nigeria and indeed the African continent.
AUST, is hosting one of the Centres of Excellence, known as Pan African Material Institute (PAMI), with research focus electrical power, disease detection and treatment.
Musujusu, research, using macromolecular science is aimed at developing bio-degradable polymer material which could be used as alternative for the treatment of breast cancer in the near future.
She revealed that her research focuses on triple negative breast cancer which is the aggressive sub-type of breast cancer that is common with women from African ancestry.
Musujusu, a Sierra-Ionian national is conducting the research under the sponsorship of the Pan African Materials Institute (PAMI).
Out of 19 African Centres of Excellence, 10 Nigerian tertiary institutions won slots to churn out special research works that could compete effectively with global standards.
The ACE universities include Redeemers University, Mowe; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; University of Jos, Jos; University of Benin; and African University of Science and Technology, Abuja.
Others are University of Port-Harcourt; Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife; Bayero University, Kano; Benue State University, Makurdi; and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta.
It would be recalled that when the Ebola Virus Disease broke out in Nigeria in the year 2014, one of the ACE centres, Redeemers University served as the testing site before it was brought under control.
Musujusu said, “My research is actually centred on the development of bio-degradable polymers for treatment of breast cancer.”
“I will be focusing on triple negative breast cancer which is actually the aggressive sub-type of breast cancer that is common with women from African ancestry.”
“I believe there is a bright future for Africa, and as a woman there is much more we can do if we are empowered. This award given to me by PAMI has empowered me to face my studies with more confidence and actually contribute to the frontier of knowledge and move Africa forward.”

Nobody Can Remove Magu - Nigerian Vice President Fires Back at Jitters

The Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, on Thursday, said that nobody, not even the Senate can remove Ibrahim Magu, as the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission.
Osinbajo

Speaking while commissioning a zonal office of the EFCC in Kaduna on Thursday, the Acting President, Yemi Osinbajo, said that nobody can remove Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC).
The acting president who was represented by the Governor of Kaduna,  Nasir el-Rufai, described Magu as a “nightmare for corrupt people”.
He said; “We have confidence in Magu to fight corruption to a standstill. He will remain the EFCC chairman as long as I remain the acting president and as well as Muhammadu Buhari remains the president.
“It is our belief that Magu will continue to remain a nightmare for corrupt people for years to come.”
Osinbajo made the bold statement as Nigerian Senators on Tuesday, criticised the acting president Yemi Osinbajo for allegedly questioning their constitutional authority to confirm the nomination of appointees by the executive arm.
The Senators had expressed concern about the refusal of the executive to drop Ibrahim Magu as the acting chairman of the EFCC after his nomination was rejected twice by the upper legislative chamber.
At the resumed plenary after the Eid-el-Fitr holidays, Senate President Bukola Saraki backed a series of resolutions by senators against the executive, including one that demanded an immediate retraction of Osinbajo’s comment, which some of them said was antithetical to a democratic system.

Rigour/Moralisation: President Biya Dismisses 4th Grade Magistrate.

President of the Republic recently signed a decree dismissing Pascal Magnaguemabe, a 4th grade magistrate for misconduct. Pascal Magnaguemabe was fired for alleged abuse of powers of attorney and corruption over a family succession affair. The text signed by President Paul Biya however specified that the magistrate still keeps the right to his pension. The sacking of Pascal Magnaguemabe, comes a month after Biya chaired the Higher Judicial Council meeting.
This decision by the Head of State has had diversified interpretations as many see it as a warning signal to check corrupt practices in the judiciary. The sacking of this 4th grade magistrate who was seen as the untouchable by many is therefore a warning signal that no one is above the law.

Putin Denies Election Meddling in Meeting with Trump

Russian President Vladimir Putin (L) and U.S. President Donald J. Trump (R) meet on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany, on Friday. Photo by Michael Klimentyev/Kremlin pool/EPA

July 7 (UPI) -- President Vladimir Putin again denied Russian involvement in U.S. election meddling during his first meeting Friday with President Donald Trump.
The two leaders met for more than 2 hours ahead of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany. The get together was initially scheduled to last 30 to 45 minutes. It's the first time Trump and Putin have met face-to-face since the U.S. presidential election.
Earlier in the day, Putin and Trump shook hands for the first time. A brief video clip released by a German television network showed Trump approaching Putin and initiating the handshake. The two men smiled broadly as they then stood shoulder to shoulder briefly before the video ended.
"We have spoken on the phone with you several times on very important bilateral and international issues. But phone conversation are never enough," Putin said during the portion of the meeting open to reporters.
"We're going to have a talk now, and obviously that will continue. But we look forward to a lot of very positive things happening for Russia, for the United States, and for everybody concerned," Trump added.
They were joined in the meeting by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Russian foreign minister Sergey V. Lavrov, as well as two interpreters.
Putin and Trump discussed a number of topics, including the fighting in Syria, tensions in Ukraine, as well as the fight against terrorism and cybercrime.
The two leaders were able to agree to a cease-fire to begin Sunday in the southwestern portion of Syria.
Tillerson told reporters Trump pressed Putin on Russia's alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Putin again denied the accusations.
Tillerson said the denial is a "hindrance in the ability of us to move the U.S.-Russia relationship forward."
Trump has promised a friendlier diplomatic approach to and greater cooperation with Russia, but both Trump and Putin have been publicly critical of one another in recent days.
On Thursday, Trump called on Russia to halt its support for the Syrian government, propping up a yearslong civil war. He also called on Russia to stop fomenting violence in eastern Ukraine and end its cooperation with Iran.
For his part, Putin was quoted in Russian state media in the run-up to the G20, jabbing at Trump's economic and trade policies, saying Russia opposes "the growing policy of protectionism."
During the 2016 presidential campaign, Trump lauded Putin as a "strong leader" and promised to seek more cooperation with the Kremlin, though that has proven elusive since Trump arrived in the White House.
Trump, as recently as April, said, "We're not getting along with Russia at all."
The Trump-Putin meeting played out as a special prosecutor in the United States ramps up his investigation into whether Trump or his campaign colluded with Russian efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election to Trump's benefit. U.S. intelligence officials have said it is all-but certain top-level Russian officials, including Putin, signed off on plans to hack Democratic groups and members of Hillary Clinton's campaign in a concerted effort to hamper their electoral prospects and put Trump in office.
Trump has denied any collusion with the Russians and said he believes the Russia investigation is a "witch hunt" aimed at undermining his presidency.
Trump continued to face domestic political pressure as part of the fallout from the Russia investigation. In a letter signed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and four of his colleagues, the lawmakers urged Trump to push back against Russia's election hacking.
Trump, the letter states, needs to make "absolutely clear Russian interference in our democracy will in no way be tolerated."

Pastor Beats Politician at Polls, Emerged President of his Countr

A Presbyterian clergyman has won the votes to lead his country after defeating a former prime minister to become the President.
A photo taken on July 6, 2017 shows President-elect pastor Tallis Obed Moses arriving at Parliament in Port Vila
Vanuatu elected a pastor as its new president Thursday as the tiny pacific nation eyes continued “moral leadership” following the sudden death of its former head of state last month, local media said.
According to AFP, the popular pastor identified Tallis Obed Moses, a Presbyterian and clergyman most of his life, was sworn in after winning 39 votes against former prime minister Maxim Carlos Korman’s 17 votes.
He will now replace Baldwin Lonsdale, an Anglican priest who was elected to the presidency in 2014 but died of a heart attack in mid-June in the capital Port Vila.
“It came right down to the last vote,” the Post’s Dan McGarry said of the nail-biting finish, which followed three rounds of voting and involved 16 candidates.
Religion plays an important role in Vanuatu, whose 270,000 population is largely Christian, with the majority Protestants and about 12 percent Catholic.
McGarry said support for Moses stemmed from a desire for “moral leadership”.
“He is well-regarded within his community and within the church. He is somebody to whom the nation will be looking for a degree of moral leadership.
“Our constitution says that the office of the president symbolises the unity of the people… and there are occasions when that becomes a very important issue.”
The electoral college consists of 52 members of parliament and six provincial presidents. Voting in the fourth and final round included one absentee and one invalid ballot.
Although the president’s role is considered largely ceremonial, Lonsdale became a symbol of hope for Vanuatu when Cyclone Pam caused severe damage in early 2015.
Six months later he steered the country through a political crisis when half the government of prime minister Sato Kilman was convicted of corruption, making them ineligible for office.

Why Arsenal Smashed Transfer Record for Lacazette - Wenger Opens Up

Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger, has revealed exactly what he saw in Alexandre Lacazette, which made him sanction a club record deal for the player.

Arsene Wenger believess that Alexandre Lacazette “is a great addition” for Arsenal.
The 26-year-old who signed for the Gunners from Lyon on a five-year contract with a bumper £200,000-per-week deal, will be the top earner at the Emirates.
The striker who on Wednesday finally sealed his £46.4million exit from Lyon, discussed his desire to follow in the footsteps of French Arsenal legends such as Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.
While speaking on the club's latest acquisition, the Gunners boss, Wenger is in no doubt of what Lacazette can add to the squad.
“We are very happy to have Alexandre join our group. He has shown over a number of years that he can score goals and that he is a very efficient finisher. As well, he has very interesting technical qualities and a strong character,” Wenger said on the club’s official website.
“He is a guy who is a great addition for us, and someone who will help us challenge at the top level this season.”
Lacazette is expected to be part of the squad which heads to Australia and then China on tour this weekend, with a home debut likely in the Emirates Cup at the end of July.
The arrival of Lacazette may have bolstered the Gunners attack, but it also casts doubt over the future of fellow France international, Olivier Giroud, who has been linked with a £20million move to both Everton and West Ham.
Arsenal also are looking to tie down key men Sanchez, linked with Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich, as well as Ozil, both of whom have just one year left on their current deals.

President Buhari Gets Recognition from English Dictionary

The 74 year old political leader has made a huge mark in Nigeria with his name written on the sands of time with gold never to be washed away easily.

President Muhammadu Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari might be sick and probably enduring some unpopular moments in his political career due to the crises in Nigeria but he has achieved a milestone in his life.

He has broken the nation's record as the first Nigerian to enter the English dictionary. He is the first Nigerian to have a political term - "Buharism" named after him.

According to the Wikipedia, "Buharism is a term rooted in the politics of Nigeria, referring to the economic principles and the political ideology of the military government of Nigeria headed by General Muhammadu Buhari from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985. This ideology shares common features with fascism; the government was a right-wing nationalist government that pursued corporatist economic programs and curtailed personal freedoms. Economic reforms were characterised as moving the political economy away from the control of a "parasitic" elite, and into the control of an emerging "productive" class. Buharism represented a two-way struggle: with external global capitalism and with its internal agents and advocates."

Buhari is widely hailed as a strong man of integrity who is cleansing Nigeria of the cancer of political corruption. His faltering health has constituted a setback but it is hoped that the All Progressives Congress chieftain and Fulani native will surmount the challenges before him for the betterment of Nigeria.

Tupac Shakur Prison Letter to Madonna Resurfaces, Goes to Auction

July 6 (UPI) -- A prison letter rap icon Tupac Shakur addressed to Madonna that details why he ended their relationship has resurfaced.
"For you to be seen with a black man wouldn't in any way jeopardize your career - if anything it would make you seem that much more open and exciting," Shakur wrote in the letter that was released by TMZ that is dated January 15th, 1995 at 4:30 a.m.
"But for me, at least in my previous perception, I felt due to my 'image,' I would be letting down half of the people who made me what I thought I was. I never meant to hurt you," he continued.
The letter, which was written as he served time on sexual abuse charges while at the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York, will go up for auction at the Gotta Have Rock and Rolle sale between July 19-28, said Rolling Stone, who confirmed the note's authenticity.
Highlights from the letter include Shakur apologizing to Madonna, asking for her friendship and several ominous messages.
"I offer my friendship once again, this time stronger and focused. If you are still interested I would like to further discuss this with you but some of it couldn't wait. I felt compelled to tell you...just in case anything happened to me," he wrote. "Please be careful Madonna. Everyone is not as honorable as they seem there are those whose hearts bleed with envy & evil. They would not hesitate to do you harm!"
Shakur died on Sept. 13, 1996 after being shot during a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas.

An Idea Of a Project That Can Promote The Kom Society In One Way Or The Other- By Dr. Nick Ngwanyam, MD

A Presentation by Dr. Nick Ngwanyam

On the Occasion of the review of the book The Modern Kom Society, by Joseph Nsom; on 1st July 2017, at the Blue Pearl Hotel Bamenda.

It is my pleasure to be here with you and to talk about this book: The Modern Kom Society- Culture, Customs and Traditions, by Bobe Joseph Nsom.

I was given a specific task at this book launch. I was asked specifically to come up with an idea or project that can promote the Kom society in one way or the other after reading the book.
I felt uncomfortable because book reviews follow certain rules, logic and style that I am not conversant with. However, in view of my specific objective which seeks to bring out lessons that can be useful for your development, I am very much at ease with this approach.
I am intimidated by the number of Professors from the Kom land and I asked a couple of questions to understand why me? I did realize after reading through the book that it was necessary for me to bell this cat because I am an outsider and would tend to look at the Kom tradition objectively with no bias nor hidden agendas.
It is very difficult to write a book and edit it yourself and hope to be perfect. We all have blind spots and you need a total stranger to pick the issues for you over which you will gloss for years on end without being concrete. So an outsider needs to gloss over the Kom tradition and culture to see the hidden areas of conflict and interest.

On a general note, I will like to congratulate Bobe Nsom Joseph for writing this particular book. It is always a challenge to write. It costs money and it is also more challenging when you deal with a community of people (Cameroonians) who do not like to read except for examination purposes. One expression from the book which needs to be elucidated or put in inverted commas is ‘sipping mimbo’. That phrase would not make sense to many people beyond our context and it has not been explained. So much for the distractions.

‘A nous mouttons’
as they would say in French. Or put different, let us go to our business of the day.

1) What are those things that are found in the Kom culture that can bring development (promote) or impede same?
2) What is development? Who is responsible for development? Who can contribute to it positively? Are some people excluded? What are the factors that allow for proper development of an individual, a people, community and nation? Are the Kom people through their culture aware of these issues?

To develop (promote), is to get better and to improve on many fronts
. These are personal growth which starts with the growth of the mind through formal and informal education and training. It is linked to ones’ ability to think critically through complex situations; with an open mind which allows one to see both sides of every coin while making informed choices, providing simple workable solutions to the complex issues, effectively and efficiently for the benefit of common good.

The mind must be teachable, flexible, accommodating and can think out of the box. Be ready to change your perspective and also listen to others because no one knows it all. The person must be able to give and take, be proactive and should take risks. Be responsible for the outcomes of your decisions and actions. The person must be ready to invest (mind, spirit, souls, material, education, friendships, networking, forgiving etc).
Development is a product of the mindset/habits/culture/tradition which themselves, depend on education and training.  If the mindset is static, development is stifled. If the mind is dynamic and positively, then the individual grows, there is economic growth, there are infrastructural changes and many other things we call development. There is peace and satisfaction.
So what is the mindset of the Kom man?

What drives him? What motivates him? What does he look forward to achieving? What makes him feel like a man? What gets him out of bed early in the morning? What would give him sleepless nights? What is the crown he seeks to achieve?

Generally, the human being no matter his color is motivated by needs. Maslow has classified them into what is well known as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Kom people and Cameroonians as a whole need to understand this pyramid otherwise they would spend their lives running in circles and would get nothing out of life.
What are the challenges faced by a Kom man? Which are the common pressures he has to live through daily? He has his culture/ tradition, his understanding of the concept of God and the spirit world in general, his level of education, his exposure to the outside world, his economic strength, his profession and his marriage.
All these issues are very complex and when problems arise, culture alone is not enough to help the troubled mind. Your culture was put in place when you settled at Liakom and defined some ground rules. It was considered a big self-sufficient kingdom with is government and laws. That became part of the wider Cameroon embracing new religions, education and supreme laws so nothing could stay fixed.
Kom people must bend reasonably with the tide and fit into a bigger picture that respect the laws of nature.

What was very important then does not have the same weight today. If you killed a lion with a spear it was worth something. If you killed a lion today in Kom with a double barrel gun, it does not have the same weight. If you do not understand that, then there would be no development as such in Kom
.

This is the foundation of the truth. The value systems have to give because nothing is static.

According to Maslow, there are five basic levels of human needs. There is a sixth which is abstract yet very important. All human beings grow vertically through this pyramid and get stuck where they chose to. The basic level for all human needs is physiological (food, water, air, excretion, sex, sleep). The second is security and safety (jobs, housing, economics, the absence of violence of all sorts). The third is the need for love and association with other human beings because we are social beings (agape, filial and Eros love).

The fourth is EGO. I am; self-pride, me, I and myself, it is about me, what is in there for me, do you know who I am?

The fifth is Self Actualization. Prof Nkwi had a dream to be a Professor. Prof Akenji had a dream to become a Vice Chancellor. They have attained the high goals they set for themselves. They have reached the summit. The motivation and the drive have taken them to level five.

Level six comes to people who are motivated differently. They are not contented with personal gains and titles nor the worship and praise from other mortals.

They ask the question; I wanted to be the Vice Chancellor, now that I am the Vice Chancellor,  so what?  AND SO WHAT; IS THE QUESTION EVERY KOM MAN AND WOMAN SHOULD ASK THEMSELVES.

This question is very revealing to a searching soul and brings one face to face with the emptiness of our being if we are spiritually mature. How many Kom people have reached this level?

Every human being who seeks to understand development and wants to bring development while desiring to be a good manager and leader must grow and reach the 6th level. This is the transcendental phase where you are led by the spirit.

It is a spiritual phase at which we go beyond self-interest and greed. We look beyond ourselves and our immediate families to the general society at large.

We seek to work for the common good and we take the focus off our being and place it on others. The only reward we seek is the true happiness of having been useful to others in truth.

This is the only place that true happiness, giving, sacrifice, agape and development reside. Our time, efforts and resources are poured out to this cause. How many Kom people have reached this level? Are you part of them?
Where is the Kom man in this narrative?

After reading through the book, I realized that the Kom man is driven by ego. He wants the title of Bobe in all its forms and shades and thinks it is the ultimate.

That is the first problem amongst the Kom people that will limit your development or retard it. You must go beyond titles; reward those things that contribute to the growth of common good. Titles by themselves do not amount to very much.

Secondly, you cannot contribute much to common good nor can you help your selves if your pockets are empty. Your good intentions are not good enough. Wishes cannot become horses. You need money and logistics. ‘Affaire Nkap, affaire tres seriuex’.

The Kom man must learn how to make money.
Development is about sound economics.  On this note I would say all Anglophones must learn the art of making money genuinely by creating businesses and cottage factories to produce goods and services. These tend to add value to systems for which we are paid. Learn to solve community problems for which you are paid.
We can learn from the Ibos and the Bamilekes. We have to fight the civil service and white collar job mentality, otherwise development would not come. Learn to create your own businesses and learn to work with each other in teams. Make agriculture a business.

A third and most disturbing area of conflict is the issue of inheritance in the Kom land. I understand many are for the matrilineal inheritance while less than 20 percent are for patrilineal inheritance. This will be a perpetual source of conflict but given time and other social pressures the patrilineal inheritance will take over especially if you intermarry with other tribes who think differently.

As the off springs become more educated and build their homes and businesses out of the village, the matrilineal inheritance will become symbolic gestures of simple houses built in the village to serve that purpose.  The real economic platforms of the families will be passed on through patrilineal inheritance especially when these children are educated and can create businesses of their own.

In concluding, please, let us look at the title of the book again; The Modern Kom Society. It tells us there was an ancient Kom society that is gone and there is a future Kom society on the way.

I will like us to understand what growth, development or success should mean to us as adults. An Adult should be one who is between 25 and 30 years, is living a purposeful life, is productive, disciplined with creative, managerial and leadership skills. He/she leaves in the fear of the Lord. Success before 25 means making it at school and going on target. When we start to accumulate wealth, talent, political positions, cars, businesses and estates, we think these are indicators of success.

True success ( development) is when we use what God has given us in every shade and colour including our talents and disposition to help those that are lesser than us to rise through life and be better than what we are or would ever be. That is my assignment for Kom people and all Cameroonians.

My job today has been in view of making a better future Kom society which is only possible by changing intelligently and positively under the influence of time and the world around us. This will happen because you and I are ready and willing to change and go the extra mile before calling on others to change. Change starts with me. Do not look on to others; do not blame others, the government, the gods, the climate and the geographical location. It is about me. No excuses.

If I must leave you with one word today, that would be, change starts with me so I must be open minded and seek to change actively.
Remember the question you should always ask yourself.

I am so and so, AND SO WHAT?

Thanks.

Dr. Nick Ngwanyam, MD 677764674.

6 WhatsApp Scams You Must Avoid

If you a big fan of the instant messaging service, WhatsApp, then these are certain scams you must watch out for.

Created in 2009 as an alternative to text messaging, WhatsApp is today one of the world’s most popular instant messaging services with more than one billion users in 180 countries. According to a May 2016 report from a research firm, SimilarWeb, WhatsApp is the top chat app in 109 countries, which represents 58 per cent of the 187 countries covered in the survey. Facebook acquired WhatsApp in 2014 to make a bigger play in the rapidly growing messaging market, along with its own Messenger platform. At the time the deal was announced, WhatsApp had 450 million users worldwide.

Considering the popularity and widespread usage of WhatsApp, even among the older generations in countries such as Nigeria, it is no surprise that the attention of hackers and other unscrupulous individuals have shifted to the medium in a bid to exploit loopholes that could be used to swindle unsuspecting users of their money or other sensitive information.

Here are six WhatsApp scams you should look out for:

1. WhatsApp Gold

The offer of an upgrade to WhatsApp Gold is a fraud that starts with a message via social networks in which WhatsApp users are invited to click on a link to update their app to the inexistent Oro version (Gold version), which offers the users a suite of new and exclusive features.  According to the research and development unit of Yudala, the link takes the user to a web page where, if he wants to use these improvements, he has to give his phone number. Interestingly, users who go on to give their number will be subscribed to a premium SMS service: each text message that you receive will cost you just a meagre sum.

Global attention was initially drawn to the existence of this scam by the Spanish National Police and Civil Guard when it reported the existence of an expensive scam costing users £36 per month. Since then, the scam has also been reported in a number of countries.

It is important to point out that there is only one version of WhatsApp; so caution is the watch-word should you get a similar invitation to upgrade to WhatsApp Gold.

2. WhatsApp Plus

According to the research and development unit of Yudala, this is another scam perpetrated by faceless individuals seeking to cash in on the ubiquitous usage of WhatsApp. WhatsApp Plus claims to let users send pictures, videos and music files of an unlimited size. This is in addition to allowing subscribers use WhatsApp with more than one number, a feature that is highly sought after by many users of the app. However, WhatsApp Plus is not associated with WhatsApp and the Facebook-owned service bans users who have also downloaded the fake app onto their device. A bold disclaimer was recently issued by WhatsApp to alert users to the existence of the fake app.

“WhatsApp Plus is an application that was not developed by WhatsApp, nor is it authorised by WhatsApp. WhatsApp Plus contains source code which WhatsApp cannot guarantee as safe and that your private information is potentially being passed to third parties without your knowledge or authorisation,” the statement said.

And to demonstrate its stance, WhatsApp blocks users that have downloaded the unsolicited version of the app, with users having to wait an additional 24 hours to get the ban lifted after deleting the fake app.

3. WhatsApp browser fraud

With the launch of WhatsApp’s browser platform, hackers created a number of similar-looking fraudulent websites to gain access to the sensitive data and bank details of unsuspecting users. Some of the tactics employed by these fraudulent websites include requesting users to download a seemingly harmless application onto their computers, which, in actuality, is a malicious software that allows the cybercriminals access to confidential information such as banking information. Another very popular strategy is to request the phone number of the unknowing users and then subscribe them to downloading premium services that charge special rates.

To avoid falling a victim, it is pertinent to bear in mind that there is only one browser version of WhatsApp, which is absolutely free. Most importantly, you do not have to download anything to your computer to use it.

4. WhatsApp video calling invite

In late 2016, WhatsApp rolled out video-calling feature for Android, iOS and Windows users. The feature, which was long anticipated, was made available for downloads via update available to all users. However, the rollout of this popular feature has created new opportunities for scammers who circulate malicious links inviting people to download video-calling. Shortly after the video-calling feature was introduced on November 15, 2016, WhatsApp users began receiving an invitation link for it. Once the user clicks on the given link, he is directed to a webpage to enable the new feature. The spam message reads, “You’re invited to try WhatsApp Video Calling feature. Only people with the invitation can enable this feature.”  And once a user clicks on the link, it redirects to a website that has been designed to look believable.

Once a gullible user clicks on the ‘enable’ tab, he/she is immediately directed to a new page that requires user verification. You would then be asked to share and invite four other friends to enable this feature through the same link. Though the entire page and the process look credible, mere clicking on this link can expose you to spammers, making you extremely vulnerable to hacking.

Please note that the correct way to enable video calling feature is to update your WhatsApp app through your Google Playstore or Apple Store. As soon as it is updated, the feature will be automatically enabled.

5. Fake WhatsApp voicemail

This is another scam that arose with the introduction of voice calls on WhatsApp. However, this scam, often perpetrated via email, does not seek to take advantage of the voice-calling feature but aims to trap unsuspecting users with the introduction of a related service. The fake WhatsApp Voicemail fraud starts when a user receives an email, notifying him of an unread voice message in the non-existent WhatsApp voicemail. When the user clicks on the large “Autoplay” button that supposedly allows you hear the message, there is no message. Instead, a malicious software introduced by a hacker is downloaded on the device. This is usually the gateway for the scammers to compromise or gain access to the user’s bank details, credit card information and other personal data. This approach was recently used by a Canadian pharmacy spam website in trying to sell its fake pharmaceutical products. The perpetrators were of the view that disguising their spam message as something completely unrelated to pharmaceutical products would help it bypass spam filters as well as trick recipients into clicking the link and visiting the site.

The best way to remain protected from this particular scam is to remember that there is presently no WhatsApp voicemail.

6. WhatsApp Spy

Despite the existence of WhatsSpy Public, an application invented by Dutch developer, Maikel Zweerink, that allows you to spy on your WhatsApp contacts by tracking the user’s online status, last time of connection and any changes made to profile photos, there is another scam app that claims to go one step ahead by offering a service that allows anyone to read the conversations of others. Known as WhatsSpy, this is a fraud in which ignorant users are tricked into downloading an app, through which malicious software are introduced into the user’s device. Understandably, a number of individuals will go to great lengths to be able to read the conversations of others, especially as a means of keeping tabs on cheating spouses or for other similar purposes. This has contributed in no small measure to many falling victim to the WhatsSpy scam.

To reiterate the fact, WhatsApp messages are encrypted and as such, you cannot remotely read other people’s conversations. WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption ensures only you and the person you’re communicating with can read what is sent and nobody in between, not even WhatsApp. Your messages are secured with a lock and only the recipient and you have the special key needed to unlock and read your message. For added protection, every message you send has a unique lock and key. All of this happens automatically: no need to turn on settings or set up special secret chats to secure your messages.

The existence of end-to-end encryption has remained one of the major factors that have contributed to the growing popularity of the Facebook-owned service.

For the Couples: Four Very Important Options to Explore When Genotype Gets in the Way

Couples who are AS and SS, and are attempting to let go of their marriage for fear of having children born with sickle cell anemia, will find this article very helpful.

Here are four important options for couples who are AS and SS and are trying to forego the thought of marriage for fear of having children born with the SS genotype known as sickle cell anemia.

1. Bone marrow transplant

Stem cells in the bone marrow are responsible for the production of red blood cells.
The bone marrow transplant is a procedure that infuses healthy stem cells into the body to replace damaged or infected bone marrow.
A transplant would mean that the affected party would no longer produce sickle-shaped red blood cells so the couple can give procreation a shot without any fear.

2. Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis

Preimplantation genetic testing is a technique used to identify genetic defects in embryos created through in vitro fertilisation (IVF) before pregnancy.
The embryos and chromosomes would be screened, and only those free of the SS genotype would be transferred to the uterus for implantation.

3. Surrogacy

This is when a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a baby in order to give someone who cannot have children.
For couples with genotype incompatibility challenges, a surrogate may be worth the investment.

4. Adoption

Adoption is perhaps the most used alternative by couples who have issues with childbearing.
Couples – who have tried several procedures in futility or don’t have so much money yet want to start a family – can assume parenting of another child.

Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has signed a new four-year deal with the club, keeping him with the Spanish giants until 2021, the Barcelona said on its Twitter page on Wednesday.
It is reported that the Argentine star will receive £500,000-a-week with €300m release clause.
Five times a Ballon d'Or winner, the Argentinean forward was entering the final 12 months of his current deal before the new one was agreed.
Reuters reported that Messi, who scored 37 times in La Liga last season, has been at Barcelona since the age of 13, rising through their youth system to become one of the most successful and recognisable footballers in the world.
The 30-year-old follows in the footsteps of teammates and fellow strikers Luis Suarez and Neymar, who signed new deals last season.
Local media reports indicate the deal will see Messi remain as the club’s highest earner, while his buyout clause has been upped to 300 million euros.

July 5 (UPI) -- John Cena made his return to WWE Tuesday during a special July 4th edition of Smackdown Live.
Cena who has been missing in action since April when he became engaged to his girlfriend Nikki Bella at WrestleMania, kicked off Smackdown Live with a passionate speech in which he declared himself a free agent able to take on competitors from both Raw and Smackdown.
The 16-time World Heavyweight Champion then listed top WWE Superstars that he would like to face in the ring including AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, United States Champion Kevin Owens, Randy Orton, WWE Champion Jinder Mahal, Seth Rollins, Samoa Joe, Universal Champion Brock Lesnar and Roman Reigns.
Cena's address was cut short by a returning Rusev, who had yet to appear on Smackdown Live following the Superstar Shake-Up in April. Rusev, with a Bulgarian flag in hand, then proceeded to degrade Cena and the United States.
Never one to back down from a fight, Cena challenged Rusev to a Flag Match to take place that night which the Bulgarian Brute declined claiming that he would fight Cena on his time. WWE announced that the Flag Match would take place at the next Smackdown pay-per-view event, Battleground on July 23.
Also on Smackdown Live, Styles won a special Independence Day Battle Royal to become the No. 1 contender for Owens' United States Championship. Key moments from the bout included Mojo Roawley eliminating his own Hype Bros tag team partner Zack Ryder and the showdown between the final three contestants, Styles, Sami Zayn and Tye Dillinger.
After Zayn threw Dillinger out of the ring, The Underdog from the Underground was eliminated by Styles who delivered a Pele Kick for the victory. The Phenomenal One's celebration was cut short by Owens who rushed to the ring and attacked Styles from behind.
Styles was able to recover, however, and fight off the self-proclaimed New Face of America who quickly exited the ring. Styles then held up the United States Championship in celebration.
Other highlights from Smackdown Live included Styles defeating Chad Gable to gain entry into the Battle Royal; Ms. Money in the Bank Carmella and her side-piece James Ellsworth having a Carmellabration that was cut short by Smackdown general manager Daniel Bryan who proceeded to bar Ellsworth from the arena, fine him $10,000 and suspend him without pay for 30 days; Smackdown Women's Champion Naomi defeating Lana; Baron Corbin attacking Nakamura backstage; Orton getting disqualified against Aiden English before verbally sparring with Mahal; and The New Day taking on Smackdown Tag Team Champions The Usos in a rap battle hosted by Wale.

Malaysia Airlines MH17 Case to be Prosecuted in Netherlands

Dutch investigators collect debris from Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, which crashed on July 16, 2014, killing all 298 aboard. An investigative team blamed a missile shot from rebel-controlled Ukraine for the crash, and Wednesday it was announced that suspects will be prosecuted in a Dutch court. July 5 (UPI) -- The Dutch Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday that suspects in the 2014 downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 will be prosecuted in a Dutch court.
An international criminal investigation determined in 2016 that a missile, fired from separatist-controlled territory in eastern Ukraine, struck the plane as it flew from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in July 2014. Russia disputed the findings, saying the missile was fired from a Ukrainian-controlled area.
The crash killed all 298 people, from 17 countries, aboard the plane.
The ministry announcement on behalf of the countries involved in the investigation -- Australia, Belgium, Malaysia, the Netherlands and Ukraine -- did not include the names of suspects.
"The [Joint Investigation Team] countries have now decided that the suspects should be prosecuted in the Netherlands, a process that will be rooted in ongoing international cooperation and support. This means that the team's cooperation will continue into the prosecution phase. Thanks to the MH17-treaty with Ukraine it will be possible for the prosecution to cover all the victims," the statement by the Netherlands Foreign Ministry said.
Investigators building the criminal case said that about 100 people were involved in the launch of the missile.
