Hon Agho Oliver Tables African Trade IssuesTo Bretton Woods Institution
Source: The Reporter Newspaper
Hon. Agho Oliver Bamenju, MP for Bafut-Tubah Constituency in the North West Region of Cameroon has taken to task the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund on the plight of deteriorating African trade with the rest of the world.
He made Cameroon's voice as well as that of Africa heard during the 2023 Global Parliamentary Forum that recently held in Washington DC from April 10 through April 11, 2023.
The young Cameroonian Member of Parliament was one of the privileged 200 MPs selected worldwide to attend the 2023 Global Paliamentary Forum organized by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Parliamentary Network on the World Bank and IMF in Washington DC.
Hon Agho Oliver sounded Africa's voice during the forum which is the first in-person since the outbreak of COVID-19.
Hon Agho Oliver's question was one of those that caught the attention of the president of the World Bank Group.
The young Cameroonian MP argued insisted that if trade issues between Aftica and she entire world are properly fixed, most Africans will benefit. He used the example of his constituency that is near Bamenda as an example to benefit enormously if trade was fluid between Cameroon and Nigeria through the Ekok road.
Hon. Agho Oliver during the exclusive Parliamentary Townhall with World Bank President, David Malpass and IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva wanted to know from the two giant Bretton Woods institutions what they were doing concretely to help the Africa Continental Free Trade Area, given that presently intra-African trade stands at meagre 18%?
Hon Agho Oliver's worries could be easily understood by Cameroonians given that Cameroon is one of the first six African countries that have been selected to lead the trial phase of the African Continental Free Trade Area, AfCFTA.
It is worthy to note here that the African Continental Free Trade Area seeks to ensure the unrestricted movement of goods and services in the continent.
Hon. Agho Oliver considered by many as a very proactive Member of Parliament has never missed any opportunity to bargain for his constituents, his country and the African continent whenever he attends an International confab.
The Washington DC meeting permitted him to join other legislators from around the world and leadership from the World Bank and IMF to brainstorm and chart news ways to tackle crucial development challenges facing the world. Discussions during the forum were pivoted on the theme “Tough Challenges, Tougher Choices.”
Greater attention was placed on the multiple crisis facing the earth and humanity, including climate change, insecurity, governance, accountability, growth, debt, gender and cross-border migration.
Hon Agho during his stay in Washington DC also attended the Global Young MP Initiative opened only to parliamentarians aged 40 and under to explore innovative approaches to environmental and social policies to foster sustainable societies

Minister Fuh Calistus Bans Production, Sales of Sachet Whiskies
The Minister of Mines, Industries and Technological Development Prof. Fuh Calistus Gentry has slammed a ban on the production and commercialization of sachet whiskies in Cameroon. According to the ministerial decision the commercialization of sachet whiskies in plastics below 50microns is prohibited.
It should be noted that the decision had elapsed as far back as September 2016 for production and sale of whiskies in sachets and canisters will be prohibited in Cameroon. Such is the consequence of a government decision dating back to 12 September 2014, which enforced the application of the standard on the production of liqueurs and others spirits in Cameroon. Actually, this standard excluded from the market products in sachets and packaged in canisters, since it only provides for packaging in glass containers which can be stamped. The government's decision then included a moratorium of 24 months (which expires on 12 September 2016), in order to enable the distillers sell their old stocks and ensure their production tool comply with the new standard.
The production of affordable whiskies in sachets (FCfa 100) was well received in Cameroon, since it opened to many the consumption of a product until now reserved to those who had the means to afford it. But, very quickly, the consumption of these products became a real social scourge, a danger to the population's health. Local news in the country during the past years revealed the dramas which occurred following the consumption of these beverages. The most serious threat is that it litters everywhere. Community hotspots are being invaded by sachets, streets, water sources etc are suffocating. Sachets have become a big hazard and polluting agents. Millions of tons are imported from neighbouring countries and from China, Europe and America. More than 90% end up in landfills causing both land, air and water pollution.
Environmental advocates have saluted the courageous decision by Prof. Fuh Calistus Gentry to ban the production and sales of whiskies in sachets. The decision public opinion holds will.go a long way to reduce plastic pollution. Global Landscapes Forum, GLFx Nkambe has saluted the minister's courageous decision to slam a ban on the phenomenon of sachet whiskies. GLFx project coordinator Ekoaba Cevie said plastic pollution has reached crisis level and the minister's ban is highly appreciated

* EXECUTIVE SECRETARY: THE FON NTUNDIP/NDU
What You Need to Know About HRH Fon Njofor Maurice , President of DOMAFU
HRH Fon Njofor Maurice Ndi Ngiri 2, President of DOMAFU is the ruler of Chup village and a veritable leader per excellence. It was G.K Chesterson, the great scholar who once wrote that each time the world was in trouble the demand went up for practical men. HRH Fon Njofor Maurice is a practical man at the helm of Donga Mantung Fons Union. After a careful assessment of the potentials of those who passed round as leaders in those challenging times, Gardner was forced to come up with what he considered qualities of a good leader. In doing this, he had no bias or no particular individual in mind. His postulations on a good leader corresponded with what yet another greater leader of all times, Martin Luther King said. HRH Fon Maurice Njofor Nfor is a senior tax inspector. He is a graduate from the National Sc0hool of Adminidtration and Magistracy, ENAM. Cycle A .With a maitrise public law and a Master2 in Business Administration from UD.Therefore, falls within the ranks of Martin Luther's description of leadership. “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus but a molder of consensus”. Martin Luther King was simply overwhelmed by the quality of leaders around him and.saw in most leaders the individuals who rather than mold consensus in times of conflict went searching for consensus. His worries soon found expression in Dan Marino Sr’s reflections that “Leadership, I think you must have that, particularly when a team’s on the field, they look to you. In critical situations, they look into your eyes to see if you’re there. If you’re not there, they start quitting”. Most of our leaders have fallen into this category. Our societies, talk less of Donga Mantung Division has had such leadership. They have functioned as if leadership was a technical or an intellectual exercise where one plus one was three, as the Nigerian singers put fondly. Donga Mantung Division, has had its fair share of such leadership which had the zeal to build society but handicapped by the fact that they fight among themselves and allow the stranger to reap the harvest. Donga Mantung fons, it has been said, have had everything that an association worth its name has, yet all these opportunities have been thwarted by in-fighting. HRH Fon Maurice Njofor Nfor has brought hope and is expected to put to use his leadership and rich education background
