Lagos Tanker Explosion: Survivors Narrate Horrific Tales

It was black Thursday in Lagos yesterday, when a fully-loaded 33,000-litre fuel tanker exploded on Otedola Bridge along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, killing many people and razing about 67 vehicle.

Rescue workers at the scene of the Lagos tanker fire

Witnesses and survivors have recounted the horrific fire from an oil tanker that killed nine people and destroyed 54 cars when the tanker fell on Otedola Bridge along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Thursday evening.

According to report by Vanguard, an eyewitness identified as Adewale Adesanya, who spoke to the publication, said he never envisaged that the truck would experience any brake failure. He said that immediately the vehicle experienced brake failure, it fell and spilled its contents.

“Due to the state of the road, I saw the content spilling towards my vehicle with fire accompanying it. So I quickly ran out of the vehicle and cross to the other side to avoid been caught in the inferno.”

Another survivor, Michael Simon, whose car was razed, said: “I am happy I didn’t die while trying to escape from the scene. I tried manoeuvring my vehicle to avoid been burnt but my efforts proved abortive.”

Another witness identified as Maria Oje, described her escape as the handiwork of God, adding that she saw some motorists’ who failed to run for safety.

“One of them who was on fire fell down, as he could not run any longer. Nobody could rescue them as everyone was also running for dear life.”

Nkechi Obiageli, who is another witness said: “I was in a commercial bus heading towards the Mowe area of Ogun State. The bus was beside the tanker.

“There was traffic and when it cleared a little, the bus driver manoeuvred his way to the front. We were about a few vehicles away from the tanker when we heard the sound of an explosion.

“The fuel from the tanker spilled on the expressway and all the vehicles at its back went up in flames. People ran for dear life. There was confusion everywhere.”

A bus driver, Sunday Esene, said his vehicle was burnt in the accident. “I had just dropped off my passengers at Berger bus stop and turned to buy fuel. I was on my way back when I saw the tanker.
"All of a sudden, it tumbled and hit the median. As soon as I realised that fuel was spilling out of the tanker, I abandoned my bus and jumped to the other side of the road. A few seconds later, the tanker exploded. I am sure over 50 vehicles got burnt with many lives lost.”

A motorist, Aderibigbe Oluwafemi, said he escaped death by a whisker as the tanker was in front of his vehicle.

“We were in traffic. When the traffic eased a little, I noticed that the tanker in my front did not move. The next thing I saw was that the tanker started moving backwards and it fell.
"Immediately it fell, I opened my door, removed my key, phone and jumped to the other side of the road. My car got burnt, but I am happy to be alive.”

It took the effort of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the police and other agencies to put out the fire and restore calm on the road.

General Manager, LASEMA, Adeshina Tiamiyu, said: “The accident happened around 5.25pm and involved a tanker loaded with petrol. The tanker fell and spilt its content, causing fire which burnt 54 vehicles. The vehicles, which were of different models, were trapped behind the truck.

“Some motorists, who turned to run away, crashed into other vehicles. Some jumped out and others fell into the gutter in the course of running away. We found dead bodies on the ground and in the gutter. Some of the people who died in the gutter had probably been caught by the fire and jumped into the gutter to put it out.

“Nine dead bodies have been recovered and four were injured. Two were seriously injured, while two sustained minor injuries. The injured have been taken to a hospital, while the bodies have been taken by SEHMU to the mainland hospital mortuary. We are currently making efforts to remove the burnt vehicles from the road.”

How 9 People Were Killed, 54 Vehicles Burnt As Tanker Exploded On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

As many as nine persons have been killed and 54 vehicles burnt down after a tanker exploded on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway

The scene of the fire

It will be recalled that serious tragedy struck on Thursday at the Otedola Bridge, Lagos end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, after a petrol-laden tanker crashed and exploded.

A Punch Metro report has revealed that no fewer than 54 cars and commercial vehicles driving behind the tanker on the road were said to have been gutted by fire, during which nine people were reportedly killed.

Emergency management workers were said to have been mobilised to the scene to rescue commuters trapped in the accident.

Punch Metro reports that some motorists, who made a U-turn and attempted to flee the scene of the incident, crashed into other vehicles.

Lives were reportedly lost in the secondary accident that resulted from the confusion caused by the fallen tanker.

An eyewitness, Nkechi Obiageli, said the accident occurred around 5pm.

She said, “I was in a commercial bus heading towards the Mowe area of Ogun State. The bus was beside  the tanker.

“There was traffic and when it cleared a little, the bus driver manoeuvred his way to the front. We were about a few vehicles away from the tanker, when we heard the sound of an explosion.

Immediately it fell, I opened my door, removed my key, phone and jumped to the other side of the road. My car got burnt, but I am happy to be alive.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that the rescue effort, which was coordinated by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, also involved officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, Lagos State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Corps, Lagos State Ambulance Service, State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit, Rapid Response Squad, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps,  and the police, among others.

The General Manager, LASEMA, Adeshina Tiamiyu, said firefighters had put out the fire.

He added that some motorists were killed while attempting to run away from the scene of the fire.

He said, “The accident happened around 5.25pm and involved a tanker loaded with petrol.  The tanker fell and spilled its content, causing fire which burnt 54 vehicles. The vehicles, which were of different models, were trapped behind the truck.

The injured have been taken to a hospital, while the bodies have been taken by SEHMU to the mainland hospital mortuary. We are currently making efforts to remove the burnt vehicles from the road.”

The acting Director of the state fire service, Rasak Musbau, said four fire stations responded to the inferno.

He noted that the tanker was conveying 33,000 litres of fuel.

“The tanker was attempting to climb the steep road that connects to the expressway when it developed a fault. Our men from the Alausa, Ikeja, Ilupeju and Bolade stations responded. But the time we got there, the fuel was already spilling down the road and had caught up with a lot of vehicles. We got there four minutes after receiving the alert around 5.25pm,” he said

The Lagos State Sector Commander, FRSC, Hygenus Omege, confirmed that 54 vehicles were burnt in the inferno.

He said, “It is obvious that the driver lost control of the tanker. We heard the tanker suffered brake failure. We have counted 54 burnt vehicles. Four people, who were rescued, are in the emergency unit and about nine bodies have been recovered.”

Omege said one tanker, five buses, two trucks, one tricycle and 45 cars were burnt in the inferno.

The commander of the RRS, Olatunji Disu, said about 500 policemen had been deployed in the area by the state Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi.

Disu said the police had a tough time controlling a crowd of stranded commuters who were trapped in the traffic that had extended to the Third Mainland Bridge.

He said, “This is a major expressway leading out of Lagos. At the moment, the CP has mobilised 500 policemen in the area to assist with crowd control. The traffic has extended to the Third Mainland Bridge and people have started trekking down. They want to go home. We are still expecting more crowd and we are making announcements for people to pass other routes and leave this place for us to finish the emergency duty.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the police had a record of 54 burnt vehicles.

He added that nine dead bodies were recovered.

“As soon as we got the information, our men mobilised sister agencies to the scene.

“The CP is saddened by this tragedy and he sends his condolences to the victims’ families. He has warned tanker drivers and drivers of articulated vehicles to make sure that they put in all necessary safety checks before putting their vehicles on the road,” he added.

Also, the state government on Thursday commiserated with families of victims who lost their lives, as well as those who lost their property.

The government in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kehinde Bamigbetan, described the incident as a sad development.

He said, “On behalf of the Lagos State Government, we extend our commiseration to the families of persons who lost their lives, as well as those who lost their property to the incident.

“As a government, we will not relent in putting measures in place to ensure safety of lives and property of all residents.”

The commissioner said Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had directed all relevant agencies to ensure that those in need were adequately taken care of.

In the same vein, President Muhammadu Buhari described the incident as one of the greatest tragedies witnessed in the country in recent times.

Buhari said this in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu.

Buhari said expressed his condolences to the government and people of Lagos State on the tragedy.

“Sadly, this seems to be one of the greatest tragedies we have seen in recent times,” Buhari said.

The President urged the emergency services and law enforcement officials to do their best to limit the losses and damage from the incident.

World Cup Gist: Brazilian Bar Offering Free Shots for every Neymar Fall

June 28 (UPI) -- Neymar's falls at the World Cup have inspired a Brazilian bar to reward its customers with rounds of free shots.
And the Brazil striker's latest tumble was a doozy.
Neymar took quite a few rolls in Brazili's 2-0 win against Serbia, closing out Group E on Wednesday in Moscow. He was hacked 10 times during Brazil's tournament opening draw with Switzerland on June 17. He later left a training session with an injury, but was healthy enough to finish out the group stage and help his team advance into the round of 16.
But the shots are flowing in Rio de Janeiro. After the Brazilians beat Costa Rica on Friday, the city's Sir Walter Pub posted on Facebook that it would be shelling out free alcohol for its customers.
"Decisive moment for Brazil," the bar wrote on Sunday. "This Wednesday, we'll open early ... Come cheer with us with live screen, BBQ and refill of pilsen beer! And to cheer the match, (for) every fall of Neymar, we will serve a round of shot on the house!"
Neymar has been fouled 17 times at the 2018 World Cup. Serbia picked up 13 fouls against Brazil on Wednesday, including one from Adem Ljajic against Neymar, which resulted in a yellow card in the 33rd minute.
"Promise is debt," the bar posted Wednesday. "May even fall a little more if you want."
Brazil battles Mexico in the round of 16 at 10 a.m. Monday at Samara Arena in Samara, Russia.
Neymar's only goal at the 2018 World Cup came in stoppage time during Brazil's win against Costa Rica. The Paris Saint-Germain star leads the tournament with 17 shots. He also has one assist.

Shrinking Bee Population Linked to Climate Change-Study

Over the last half-decade, nearly a third of the North American bee population has disappeared. New research suggests in some parts of the United States, climate change could be the reason bee populations continue to shrink.
To better understand how global warming affects bee health, scientists from Northwestern University and the Chicago Botanic Garden exposed bee nests in Arizona to a variety of temperatures. Researchers altered the temperatures by painting the nests black, white and clear.
Black paint caused the nests to absorb more of the sun's energy, replicating the region's future climate, should temperatures continue to rise unabated. The black paint effectively fast-forwarded to the climate of the years 2040 to 2099.
White paint caused the hives to reflect heat, taking bees back in time to climate conditions similar to those observed in the 1950s. Clear paint worked as a control.
"It's pretty low-tech, but it works," Northwestern researcher Paul CaraDonna said in a news release. "The field site is so remote that something more high-tech with solar panels or a power source was out of the question."
The study included 90 nests in Arizona's Santa Catalina Mountains, an area where bees continue to thrive. All of the nests were inhabited by a native species known as the mason bee, Osmia ribifloris, also called the blueberry mason bee.
Scientists replicated the experiment twice, observing back-to-back seasons. Each season, researchers found bees in the black nests suffered increased mortality rates and emerged early from diapause over a longer period of time. Diapause is a term to describe insect hibernation.
Normally, bees wake up from diapause over the course of 10 to 15 days, but bees developing and hibernating under warmer conditions emerged from diapause over a 50-day period.
"This suggests that they are responding to a stressful environment," CaraDonna said. "Because their emergence times are altered, they now potentially have fewer floral resources available to them as a population, and it might be a lot harder to find mates."
Bees emerging from black nests were also smaller and had lower levels of body fat. Scientists hypothesized warmer temperatures accelerated the bees metabolism during diapause.
"For insects, size is a big deal," CaraDonna said. "Bigger is usually better. It means you have greater energy stores, which essentially means you can weather more storms. As a bee, that means you are likely able to reproduce more, which has implications for the stability of the population."
According to the new study -- published this week in the journal Functional Ecology -- climate change may begin to push some bee species up against their physiological limits.
It's likely the bee populations will move to higher elevations as temperatures continue to warm, but the migration would leave native manzanita plants without their usual pollinator.
"This mason bee is probably one of the best pollinators for this plant species, so if you take away the pollinator, you might take away the plant in the longer term," CaraDonna said. "We need to understand how nature works and see how it responds to important sources of variation. Otherwise, we don't have the ability to keep it safe."

How To End A Friends With Benefits Relationship And Still Stay Friends

How do you end a friends with benefits situation on good and still keep your friend when things go south? Why is it ending? Did they catch feelings and is it mutual? You will find this article very helpful in answering these questions.

File photo (Image: Health Facts)

Friends with benefits (FWB) sounds like a simple "no strings attached" agreement. You can talk openly, laugh, hang out and have s*x without the drama that comes with being in a relationship. You both know what you got yourselves into, knowing that it may not last forever.

It is never as easy as it sounds because things often lead towards complications. In this situation, feelings are likely to erupt and, when these feelings come from only one person, it becomes much more complicated than you ever signed for.

Hopefully, these tips will help you know how to end a friends with benefits situation and remain friends. It may not be easy, but it doesn’t have to be as hard as you think.

1. Appreciate them

Make sure they know you appreciate them as a friend and care about your friendship, but you think the benefits have run their course. It was fun while it lasted, but it is time to move on.

2. Ask if they are upset

After all, they are your friend. Talk to them and ask if they saw it coming. Try to communicate as effectively as you can. Let them know why you want to end things and make sure they know you are still there for them as a friend.

3. Prepare them

They are a friend of yours and may be following you on social media and seeing you around. If you are entering into a relationship or the dating scene, let them know ahead about it. Let them not be taken off guard when they see you making out with someone, even if they didn't develop feelings for you.

4. Take a break

If they did develop feelings, or you did and want to get out before the feelings get more intense, take a break and get some space before going back to being just friends. Let them know that you think things are getting more complicated than you planned. Just make sure you are on the same page about maintaining your friendship.

5. Don't avoid them

Developing a friends with benefits situation with someone meant that you both agreed to be honest. If you plan on being friends after ending the benefits, ghosting is not an option. Refusing to answer them afterwards and leaving them high and dry is both rude, disrespectful and cowardly. No good friend should act like that. Just let them know how you’re feeling. They will understand if they are a good friend.

6. Let them grieve

Since this is sort of a breakup, give them time to be upset. As I said, it is a sort of break up. This news might be shocking and upsetting to them, so give them a chance to come to terms. You can reach out to hang out but give them the space they need. Eventually, they will understand and your friendship should survive.

7. Stick to your decision

If you are ending your friends with benefits situation to start dating again, but then have a bad date, don't expect them to wait around with open arms. Picking up a friends with benefits relationship after ending it is confusing and will make your friendship even more complicated.

8. Talk to someone

If a trusted mutual friend knows about your friends with benefits situation, talk to them. Ask for suggestions or if your friend is also thinking about ending things. It's good to prepare yourself with information but do it respectfully. Also be careful not to share anything too private.

9. Do normal things

Ending your friends with benefits relationship doesn't have to feel like a break-up. Keep hanging out with your friend and doing things you did together and things can drift back to normal. If you have a strong foundation, with truth and routine, you can swing back really quickly.

10. Don't push it

As much as you may want to stay friends, not all FWBs can survive as friends without the added benefits, whether it was due to feelings, betrayal or lies. If this is the case, let it be. It will be if you are meant to stay friends. But do not drag their name in the mud because they couldn't get past it or vent to people. Entering into an FWB situation is a risk you took.

World Cup Gist: Why Super Eagles Lost To Argentina, Okocha Makes Critical Analysis

Legendary Nigerian football playmaker, Jay Jay Okocha has opened up on how the Super Eagles lost to Argentina and were eliminated at 2018 FIFA World Cup in Saint Petersburg, Russia.

Jay Jay Okocha

While speaking after Super Eagles were defeated 2-1 by Argentina at the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on Tuesday night, former Nigerian captain, Austin 'Jay Jay' Okocha, admitted that the Eagles lost due to the ‘limited experience’.

Argentina superstar, Lionel Messi broke his drought at the World Cup to give the 2-time world champions the lead in the 13th minute.

Victor Moses restored parity for the Super Eagles from the penalty spot after Javier Mascherano was adjudged to have fouled Leon Balogun in the box.

Manchester United star, Marcos Rojo scored a stunning late winner 3-minutes from time to send Jorge Sampaoli’s side to the next round.

Okocha said during his analysis on SuperSport during the game said; “Uzoho kept us in the game with the saves he made in the second half. We panicked in the first half.

“If you want to be a bit harsh. We were not clear to keep more players in attack. We were limited in terms of experience.

“It was a gift from Mascherano but then I thought we started the second half better. We got ourselves in better places. It was a fantastic penalty from Moses but I think we should have put them under more pressure.”

Speaking on the controversial penalty denied the Super Eagles, the former Bolton Wanderers playmaker said the Nigerian team did not put more pressure on the referee.

Marcos Rojo handled the ball in the box involuntarily and the referee viewed it on VAR but ruled it out.

“Nobody appealed under the referee. We know what the Argentines are like. Rojo got away with one.”

On Wilfred Ndidi’s chance in the 76th minute, Okocha said: “He had more time to keep the ball down to take a good shot.

“Scoring is not his thing but I feel he should have kept the ball a close more to take a better shot.”

On Odion Ighalo’s miss, Okocha’s said: “It was a glorious chance, the ball sat down well for him. If I was Ighalo I would try to force a save from the goalkeeper. If you don’t hit the target you don’t get your job done.”

Ighalo extended his goal drought to eight games. The Changchun Yatai striker has scored four goals in 21 games for the Super Eagles.

On the late goal the team conceded, the former PSG play maker added: “We’ve seen so many late goals in this tournament. Poor defending. Moses reacted late. I have seen him deal with that at Chelsea. I can’t fault the effort of the player, they gave their best.

“It was going to be tough for us and it lived up to that and it went to the last three minutes, but I think we have to look at the bigger picture. Most of these players it was the first time.

“For the manager he did well. It’s about continutiy. We don’t have to point fingers at anyone.”

UEFA Slams One Year Ban On AC Milan

UEFA has sanctioned Italian giants AC Milan by banning the club from participating in any European football over an incident.

Italian giants AC Milan have been banned from European football for one year for breaching Financial Fair Play regulations.

Milan had qualified for the group stages of this season's Europa League after finishing sixth in Serie A.

Uefa said the club, which spent £200m on transfers last summer after a takeover, breached rules around requirements for clubs to break even.

The decision could be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Before the verdict, Milan released a video on Twitter saying they expected "fairness, rulings based on facts and equal rules for all" from Uefa.

The statement said the club are "ready to pay for the errors made in the past" and "have the utmost respect for the rules, but we expect equality".

Why did Milan face sanctions?
The Italian club was owned by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi from 1986 until it was sold to a Chinese consortium for 740m euros (£648m) in April 2017.

The club then went on a £200m spending spree in the summer, bringing in Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus for £35.1m and Andre Silva from FC Porto for £33.6m. It was the first time since 2002 the club had broken the £30m barrier for a player.

Uefa referred the case to its adjudicatory body to make a ruling as it said there "remained uncertainties" following an investigation into the Serie A club's financial affairs.

The "uncertainties" were said to relate to the refinancing of a loan due to be paid back in October 2018.

Uefa's financial fair play rules were brought in to stop clubs running up huge debts, and they can be punished if they spend more money than they earn.

Sanctions for breaching the rules range from warnings and reprimands to points deductions and transfer embargoes.

What did the club say?
Milan said the 2017 summer spending spree "renovated the squad, putting together the youngest side in Serie A".

"We invested more than 200m euros to open a new cycle," the statement added. "One year later, the value of the investment is unchanged and the market value of the squad is the third in Serie A."

The club says the first team's salaries are below 60% of revenues "thanks to investments mainly targeted on young players with a view to the future".

Milan also say the club are on course to meet the targets set in their business plan presented to Uefa, have made investments in the training ground, will field a women's team next season, have adhered to B-team initiatives and will participate in the next Lega Pro season with their Under-21 side.

"We immediately focused to ensure greater efficiency to our organisation, to manage the club in an upstanding, transparent and responsible way," the statement said.

"We lowered the operating costs by 6m euros. Our majority shareholder increased the capital over the course of a year by 88m euros (not loans), raising the value of the club's assets. The club is actually aiming for a more stable and thriving asset.

"All of these facts are inspired by a single mantra: working for the future of Milan, a valuable asset to the world of football."

Joe may have been the most successful parent managing his children in the history of music. He, with a little help from Diana Ross, engineered the careers of The Jackson 5, and then Michael and Janet Jackson as solo artists.

The elder Jackson took a lot of heat from Michael and his siblings for abusing parenting and management practices, including physical brutality. Joe copped to it but, far from apologizing … he said his methods made his kids successful and kept them out of jail.

Michael’s dad stood by him during his molestation trial. After Michael’s death, Joe was criticized for trying to make money off his son’s memory.

Joe had 10 kids with Katherine, his wife of more than 60 years. The 2 did not live together and had a strained relationship for the last years of his life, but they frequently interacted.

Joe was 89.

Criticisms Trail Cristiano Ronaldo's Performance Against Iran

The Real Madrid forward missed a penalty and escaped a red card in his last outing, with World Cup progress secured on another controversial evening.

Cristiano Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo has offered enough to the Portugal cause down the years that he is “allowed an off day”, says Jose Fonte, but VAR continues to bemuse and frustrate those at World Cup 2018.

The introduction of technology into top-level football has been welcomed by many, but teething problems have yet to be ironed out and match officials are still coming to terms with the system.

Portugal discovered that again in their latest outing, with an eventful clash with Iran seeing them play out an action-packed 1-1 draw to book their place in the last 16.

Ronaldo was the beneficiary of outside interference at one stage, as he won a second-half penalty, but the Real Madrid superstar saw his effort saved and Ricardo Quaresma’s stunning opener cancelled out by a contentious stoppage-time spot kick from Karim Ansarifard after Cedric was adjudged to have handled inside the box.

Fonte said of his captain’s struggles, which also saw him avoid a red card for an alleged elbow on Morteza Pouraliganji: “We had an opportunity to make it 2-0, close the game out and we did not manage to score.

“Ronaldo scores for us so many times, so it is no problem - he is allowed an off day. He will get one in the next game.

“In the end, we managed to qualify, which is always the main objective, and after that we will see what comes.”

Iran coach Carlos Queiroz, a Portuguese native, was less than impressed by the decisions which went against his side on Monday, but Fonte was just as scathing in his assessment of VAR and the impact it has made on a tournament littered with penalties and breaks in play.

The former Southampton and West Ham defender said: “This World Cup is just crazy! We are not happy with the situation, the constant stopping the game, the controversy all the time.

“To end the game like that is just not fair. This VAR system is not my thing. Cedric is furious. In our opinion, he is not even looking at the ball. It is impossible to not have your arms raised in that position. How can you jump with both arms next to your body, it is impossible. The ball did not even change trajectory.

“In the end, we could have almost lost the game - VAR is unacceptable.”

Portugal’s reward for battling their way through Group B is a second round clash with much-fancied Uruguay – who won all three of their games en route to topping Group A.

Fonte is aware of the size of the challenge facing the Euro 2016 winners, but is ready to embrace it.

He said: “We have to face whoever we face. We will just take it as it comes.

“We are happy, how many teams have gone home? We are through and that is the main thing.

“We are not happy with how it went down in the last few minutes, but we were controlling the game, playing the ball out from the back, being patient, creating chances. In the end, we got done by a dubious decision and we have to move on. Sometimes you just don’t get the rub of the green.”

The Terranga Lions of Senegal on Tuesday, became the first African team to win a match at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia after they emerged victorious in a 2-1 defeat of Poland.

In a bid to celebrate their victory in style, the Senegalese fans showed their civil side by cleaning up the stadium joyfully 40minutes after their game against Poland in their opening game of Russia 2018 World cup.

The fans were seen packing drinks and food packaging and putting them in the bin bags in a bid to keep the stadium clean. They were later praised online for their act of cleanliness and ability to be humble and helpful despite their victory.

Coached by Alou Cisse, the captain of the Senegalese side which shocked France 1-0 on their road to the quarter finals of the Korea/Japan 2002 World Cup, Senegal scored in both half to record an impressive win.

Led by Liverpool’s Sadio Mane, the West African country which is the highest ranked African nation in the FIFA rankings opened their World Cup account through an own goal by Brazil-born defender, Thiago Cionek on 37 minutes.

Senegal, in only their second World Cup appearance since their 2002 impressive debut, however, held on to record an impressive win over the shell-shocked Europeans, and will look to take control of Group H when they meet Japan, who earlier recorded a surprise 2-1 win Colombia, on 24 June.

World Cup Gist: Psychic Pig Predicts Nigeria Will Reach Semi-Final

A mystic pig who was said to have predicted Donald Trump's election, has predicted that Nigeria and Argentina will reach semi-final in the 2018 World Cup.
The Super Eagles in their locker room

The psychic pig, Mystic Marcus that predicted President Donald Trump’s victory has picked Nigeria, Argentina as semi-finalists for the 2018 World Cup, Daily Mail UK reports.

The pig has a history of sniffing out winners – and is hoping to continue his unbroken record for this summer’s World Cup.

Mystic Marcus has a 100 per cent track record of predicting sports results according to his owner Juliette Stevens.

Marcus was offered apples with flags denoting the 32 teams taking part in the competition

The black micro pig had previously guessed the winner of the 2014 World Cup and the Wimbledon tennis finals by picking apples.

And the eight-year-old prophesier even predicted Brexit and that Donald Trump would win the US presidential election.

Now Mystic Marcus is putting his skills to the test once more by forecasting the semi-finalists for this summer’s World Cup in Russia.

After eating Argentina, right, he sniffed out Saudi Arabia and Iran before choosing Nigeria

With bad news for England fans, Mystic Marcus expects Belgium, Argentina, Nigeria and Uruguay to make it through.

Farmer and micro pig breeder Juliette from Heage, Derbyshire, said: ‘Marcus is the seventh child of a seventh child and apparently they’re gifted with special powers so maybe that’s where it comes from.

‘A few years ago I was invited on a radio show because of Paul the octopus predicting results and they wanted to see if I had any animals that had the ability.

‘I hadn’t tried the seventh child theory out so thought I’d give it a go.

‘They used apples and oranges and Marcus predicted the football results, it was amazing.’

Juliette, 50, said after that first result they changed the method to make it more scientific.

Now Mystic Marcus, who has about 30 children and grandchildren, will pick from apples of a similar size and colour to make it as fair as possible.

The apples will include markers – such as pictures or flags – and Marcus will gobble down the winner.

Breast Milk is Healthy for Children, Scientists Reveal in New Study

A new study has revealed the importance why nursing mothers should never skip giving their babies breast milk.

The unique composition of sugars in a mother’s breast milk may prevent food allergies in her infant, according to a study published in the latest issue of Allergy.

The study highlighted the health role of Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs), which are not found in infant formula, suggesting a potential for therapeutic interventions.

HMOs are structurally complicated sugar molecules unique to human breast milk, and the third most abundant solid component in human milk after lactose, a different type of sugar, and fat.

They are not actually digestible by infants, but could help guide development of the infant gut microbiota, which previous research suggests is a key influencer of allergic disease.

Previous studies have shown that breastfed infants have a lower risk for a variety of medical conditions, such as wheezing, infections, asthma and obesity.

Researchers at the University of California (UC), San Diego School of Medicine and their colleagues in Canada analyzed breastmilk samples taken three-to-four months after birth from 421 infants and mothers.

Then, at one year of age, infants were given skin prick tests to check for allergic sensitization to common allergens, including certain foods.

The team found that 59 of 421 infants (14 per cent) displayed sensitisation to one or more food allergens at age one.

“Our research has identified a ‘beneficial’ HMO profile that was associated with a lower rate of food sensitisation in children at one year,” said Lars Bode, associate professor of pediatrics at UC San Diego School of Medicine, who led the study.

No individual HMO was associated with food sensitization, but the overall HMO composition appeared to play a role, according to the study.

Composition of HMOs in breast milk is variable and determined by factors like lactation stage, gestational age, maternal health, ethnicity, geographic location and breastfeeding exclusivity.

“A positive test is not necessarily proof of an allergy, but does indicate a heightened sensitivity,” said Meghan Azad, a Canada Research Chair in Developmental Origins of Chronic Disease.

“Sensitisations during infancy don’t always persist into later childhood, but they are important clinical indicators and strong predictors of future allergic disease,” said Azad.
