Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 22 October 2016:
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Nkosazana
Dlamini Zuma sends her deepest condolences to the government and people
of Cameroon, and particularly, to the families of those who lost their
loved ones in the ghastly train accident, which occurred on Friday, 21
October 2016.
The
derailment occurred in Eseka in the Central Region, while the train was
moving from the capital city Yaoundé to the economic capital Douala.
The accident left over 55 people dead and 575 other passengers wounded.
The
AU Commission Chairperson also wishes speedy recovery to the injured,
and supports the government’s decision to carry out investigations, in
order to ascertain the cause of the accident, and prevent further such
incidents.
The
Government of Cameroon declared national mourning, while providing
assistance to the victims and families. The Chairperson reiterates the
strong support and full solidarity of the African Union to the
Government and people of Cameroon.
