The train was traveling between Yaounde
and Douala, when it overturned near Eseka. Eye witnesses say there were
approximately 1,300 people on the train instead of the usual 600. Transport
minister Edgard Alain Mebe Ngo'o said 54 (55) persons died and
over 575 sustained injuries in the train derailment near Eseka, today
October 21, 2016. Speaking on CRTV, Transport minister added that the accident
has recorded significant human and material damage. However, classified sources say about 14 persons are still
trapped in some of the wagons and many may die at night fall. The
cause of the derailment is still to be established.
The derailment came after the road
linking Yaoundé and Douala collapsed today morning at Matomb, momentarily
interrupting traffic between the two main cities. Following these incidents,
the airline Camair-Co announced that it will increase the frequency of its
flights between Yaounde and Douala.
