Meet Kari Jackson Bongnda; The Brain Behind SURUDEV

Kari Jackson

A quote attributed to Swami Vivekananda states that when you “Take up one idea. Make that one idea your life - think of it, dream of it, and live on that idea. Let the brain, muscles, nerves, every part of your body, be full of that idea, and just leave every other idea alone. This is the way to success.” This aphorism is an appropriate description of Kari Jackson, the Executive Director of Sustainable Run for Development-SURUDEV. Kari Jackson is a dynamic youth leader who waxes in self confidence. Some call him the climate change campaigner; others call him the agroforestry friend while others say he is Mr. Watermelon. Whatever, the truth is that this young man is setting records in Cameroon. First of all, he is rich in expedients and has the thoroughness that is very rare in youths nowadays. Kari Jackson is a good example of a good leader who has succeeded in changing lives in communities. Meet him in the field and you will agree with me that you have met an exemplary field worker. His leadership has earned him two distinct awards from Life Time Newspaper and The Eye Newspaper.
"If you wanna be somebody, if you wanna go somewhere, you better wakeup and pay attention" this was the message of Whoopi Goldberg to her exuberant young students in Sister Act. At a time when everything was crashing, chaos became congenial to the point that conventions were no longer tenable and all initiatives were ending up producing negative outcomes, something different was needed. In such a situation innovative leaders always find a way to create the needed results to succeed. Through his efforts thousands of trees have been planted in the North West Region. Of late, he partnered with the Wimbum students to plant trees at the Luh Village sacred forest. Besides, he has partnered with over twenty schools in the North West Region to that effect.
It is therefore imperative to be very practical, not hypothetical. Several youths have lost orientation in such a situation but the mightier have never sit to watch things happen negatively around. They go for the practical aspect which produces results there and there. Young Kari Jackson took Whoopi’s message like many others youths who cannot fold their hands to see mother Earth sinking into the doldrums. Though, with everything in the head and nothing in the pocket, Kari Jackson and other youths created SURUDEV to empower youths and farmers, community leaders and policy makers in sustainable practices. SURUDEV which started like a joke is breaking grounds from tree planting to bio-farming. “Our team is young, dynamic, empathetic and willing to be challenged. We are all passionate. I think this is what keeps us going. We are elated we can be identified amongst those doing great things and we believe it is a source of encouragement”, Kari says.
Harping on the successes recorded so far by this group of youths under his leadership, Kari said that "A candle will not lose its light by lighting another one”. Life, he added is full of joy “but I always remind my colleagues that we should strive to make the planet a better place for the next generation. Everyone has a say and remember we are building a Cameroon that should be prosperous and emerging too; some are hungry and poor and they are equally of a primordial portion of those to raise the country to another level and as well build the globe. Together, bit by bit, we can seal the seal with Sustainable Development”. This is so due to the impact SURUDEV is creating through its Sustainable Bio Demonstration Farms located in Bongom, Donga Mantung Division. The large scale cultivation of onion, okro and especially watermelon is at the center of attraction thanks to its uniqueness and innovative approaches of young Kari. Presently, five young women are being trained on modern farming techniques.  What was however so interesting is that these farms are serving as pilot training centres for farmers.
farm visit
Munkwa Victor Fon is one of the experienced farmers who is farm manager at SURUDEV Sustainable Bio Demonstration farms. " I have worked on a watermelons farm in the Littoral region, so when I came back home,  I met Jackson so we started working together. He is a good leader and many youths have got into planting of trees and bio farming thanks to his efforts."  This cool juicy refreshing fruit is gradually becoming a favourite at meals. Harping on the importance demonstrating farms to the farmers he said this is just to show the local population that they were ignorantly sitting on a goldmine. “We want to change the mindset of women and youths towards farming”. Sustainable agriculture he insisted provides high yields without undermining the natural systems and resources that productivity depends on. In the case of the watermelon and the onion farms, Kari continued that the farms will serve as traning centres for other farmers. On why SURUDEV is going bio Kari outlined that the approach works efficiently with natural processes rather than ignoring or struggling against them – and use the best of current knowledge and technology to avoid the unintended consequences of chemical based agriculture that would destroy the soil. "We are trying to show to farmers that  they can be able to minimize the use of pesticides and fertilizers, thereby saving money and protecting future productivity, as well as the environment", he concluded.

Ama Tutu Muna Deserves Respect

Mafor Yaah Yefon Ama Tutu Muna

There is a lack of common sense in most musicians; this is typified by the way some of them do behave in public. The jeering of a former cabinet, Minister Ama Tutu Muna during state ceremony in Yaounde  is I may say, is a bit insipid and hazy, but the point would have been seen by a child anywhere else as stupid. When such a behavior is coming from those who consider themselves celebrities it raises alot of questions and confirms why some musicians are a laughing stock in the countenance of humanity. It is important to appreciate the mind-set from which such reproach is issued; and how public intellectuals are viewed. Every society produces its own public intellectuals. When a group of people without common sense is constantly torn by the dialectical tensions that exist between classes and interests, there is reason to doubt those who claim to be leaders of such a group of people. Musicians are supposed to be models in society hardly ever, those who pass for it in Cameroon operate from that same skewed mind-set that intellectualises the greater good as that which belongs to the overriding few. It is really pathetic that some musicians want to make a mountain out of a mole hill just because Minister Ama Muna was asked to leave office yet the same noise-maker hardly raise their voices over the atrocities. Shame…. This is the first time for this type of sadistic jeering has occurred and it should never happen again. For the society which tolerates this type of behavior, there is no hope of recovery until it wakes up and gets out of the darkness to offer and insist on the protection of all of the people, and preservation of human dignity, and rights, especially that of women.
Born on July 17, 1960, Mafor Yaah Yefon Ama Tutu Muna was the only English speaking female cabinet minister of the North West in the predominantly male cabinet. A linguist by training, from the University of Montreal, Canada. After more than 9 years in Government, Ama has set records in Anglophone Cameroon. She goes into history books in great names and deserves respect for her contribution in nation building.
Mafor Yaah Yefon Ama Tutu Muna became the new person in Momo politics in the late 90s when she revamped the Mbengwi Abi Fall Sub Section of the CPDM. Her successes led to the putting in place of the Mbengwi Women Cooperative that became her spring board in politics. Ama Tutu Muna suddenly became the most influential CPDM political figure in Momo when she staged the most successful sub section conference that witnessed the presence key personalities like Ismael Bidoung Mkpat and late Ateba Ayene.
Ama has had the passion of becoming a successful woman entrepreneur with her FEMI Construction company and left a mark of greatness she constructed the Bamenda High Court. She was able to connect with poverty sickened people as champion and founder of FEMI Construction. She also enjoyed a list of accomplishments to her accolades. Her open mindedness earned her several recognitions from renounced palaces in the North West Region. She crowned Yaah Yefon by the Fon of Nso and Mafor by Meta Fons.
To consolidate this, President Biya appointed Ama on December 8, 2004 to work under Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, the then Minister of Commerce as the Secretary of State in charge of Commerce. After her appointment, she made successful strides and revamped the CPDM in Momo Division. She also created the North West Women Forum-NOWEFF.  Mafor Yaah Yefon Ama entered into records as a woman emancipator.
In 2007, Ama was appointed as Minister of Arts and Culture. Apparently Ama’s love for the 'Kaba Ngondo' fashion and love of culture expect her to go beyond what can be deduced from her manner of dressing. Ama would be remembered as the first full flesh female minister from the North West Region and the first Anglophone female cabinet minister that served for almost 10 years. After all, she is still very young and her future is still in front of her, not behind.
But with all these knacks, where did she go wrong?
Her only wrong doing is that when she entered the Ministry of Arts and Culture, there was dust everywhere and she took time to make it neat. Since in Cameroon, everyone who is able to take a microphone and make some noise is considered a musician, Ama thought it necessary to improve on their lots. Yet the same lunatics have turned out to be her newly-forged critics dripping with Viagra and venom, and they have a clearly identifiable target: Ama Tutu Muna. These bunches were waiting on Ama Muna like lascivious and hungry dogs, ready to attack her person, her policies and her actions. Singing and jeering a stateswoman can only be described as an act of ingrates just because she toppled the sordid order from where they freely fed without any efforts.
Her new critics are angry- not hungry yet- since the political limbo, no thanks to Ama for making this obscure ministry enviable.
Try to make something out of their baleful cacophony of distraught expressions of frustrations over Ama’s leadership and you hit a confusing bend. To these fellows, all the good things the ministry of Arts and Culture has pleasantly experienced since Ama came were done by Oyono while everything bad has been by Ama Tutu yet these woe-criers don't tell us that some of them have received millions as authors’ rights with the noise they make of microphones. We mourn a nation where political buffoonery became the norm.
Mafor Yaah Yefon Ama Muna deserves respect for what she has done for this nation as a politician. Whenever I think of these musical ingrates, their obscene nature of arrogance is reflected in the way some of them were brought up and the way they lived till date. The problem with these artists is simply and squarely a failure of leadership. There is nothing basically wrong with some of them and the main problem is the unwillingness or inability for them to put a leadership who is able to rise to the responsibility and to the challenge which are the hallmarks of true leadership.

Former Nigerian Petroleum Minister's Alleged Money Launderer May Face Extradition to UK

Oil tycoon, Kola Aluko who has been fingered in the corruption and money laundering saga of the embattled former Minister of Petroleum, Diezani Alison-Madueke, is to be extradited from Switzerland to the United Kingdom for investigations by security operatives.

There were strong indications on Wednesday that Switzerland might extradite a Nigerian oil baron, Kola Aluko, to the United Kingdom, according to the Punch.
The Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland, in an electronic mail to a correspondent, confirmed that the UK had sought for mutual legal assistance from its country.
In an e-mail sent to it, the office of the AGF of Switzerland was asked if it had received extradition request from the UK on the businessman.
It was also asked to specify the time the extradition process would begin and when he would be extradited.
In his response, Nathalie Guth of the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland, stated, “I refer to your request of today and we can confirm that the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG) has received a request for mutual legal assistance from England in this context.”
He declined to give further information on the request.
But The Punch learnt that “the mutual legal assistance” could lead to eventual extradition of Kola Aluko to the UK in connection with the investigation of former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke.
Kola Aluko is known for an extravagant life style and he also owns a multi million dollar yacht where American hip hop couple, Jay-Z and Beyonce spent a night recently.

President Buhari's Attempt to Function as Petroleum Minister Sparks Controversy

Two Ijaw groups have sighted a very cogent reason why President Muhammadu Buhari is not allowed to be the President of Nigeria and also function as the Petroleum Minister.
Two Ijaw groups, Ijaw People Development Initiative, IPDI and National Association of Izon Ebe Students , yesterday, said it was unconstitutional for President Muhammadu Buhari to assume the office of Minister of Petroleum according to newspaper reports
Leaders of the groups, Messrs Austin Ozobo and Ebi Wayas respectively, in a joint statement, said, “By virtue of Section 138 of the Nigeria Constitution of 1999 as amended, the president shall not during the tenure of his office hold any other executive or paid emolument in any capacity whatsoever.”
“This provision is indisputably clear , Buhari is taking us back to the days of the military rule, obviously he lacks the power to assume the position of petroleum minister as serving president,”
they asserted.
“It is an act of lawlessness and the constitution prohibits a public officer assuming two political offices and earning double salaries, the president inclusive.”
The group stated, “The president should resign as president and subject himself to screening by the Senate if he wants to be petroleum minister.”
“However, we advise him on the implication and negative impression his resolve to occupy two offices ‎may create on his unpopular change agenda,”
they added.

This year’s event will also see has come to create a forum for Cameroonian role models in the Diasporas who change and save lives every day in their communities all over the nation.
Above all, what makes the SODONWREG different is that it is an awards that also recognizes young Cameroonian employees who work their hearts out at their jobs, talents who really bring change into the communities where they live, serve, and also, entrepreneurs who not only become successful in their businesses but also translate that success into their host communities and make positive impacts.
The truth is, Cameroon is a “Land of Promise” with great potentials and such an endeavour will surely portray, that the country has a long way to go as a nation, united in peace, well-being and prosperity. SODONWREG we gathered is making the dissimilarity by bringing onboard the unsung heroes who have made a mark in changing lives through their works, talent and or creativity.

What if Issa Hayatou is FIFA's Next President

Issa Hayatou

FIFA’s Ethics Committee has slammed a 90-days suspension on Sepp Blatter. This is likely to be the end of Blatter's reign as FIFA President.  Sources say the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and long-standing senior Fifa vice-president Issa Hayatou, is expected to takeover during 90 days suspension.
Hayatou was born on 9 August 1946. Hayatou assumed the role of Secretary General at the Cameroon Football Association at the age of 28. Thirteen years later, he became president of the CAF, a role he continues to fill to this day.
In fact, Hayatou, who is now 69-year-old, recently changed the confederation's statutes which oblige executives to step down once they reach 70. He lobbied for African places at the World Cup finals to move from two to five, with impressive tournament performances from Cameroon, Senegal, Ghana and Algeria boosting the continent's profile. With Blatter already ousted from the next election, Hayatou may enter into record books as first African FIFA President.
