R*pe in the House of God

Considering the rising cases of s*xual abuse and r*pe being perpetrated by pastors and Muslim clerics against young people in the society, Medinat Kanabe and Dorcas Egede have done an appraisal of the development.

Although they teach the ‘proper’ human conduct and respect for God, and enjoy societal respect for their ‘piety;’ clergymen, whether of the Muslim faith or Christian – by the actions of a few – are increasingly casting doubts in the mind of their followers and diminishing their value in society.
A recent report emanating from the Lagos State government revealed that over 700 rape, sexual abuse, assault and defilement cases are pending across courts in Lagos State. Of this figure, 80 per cent were abused in their infant stage. The report also revealed that the majority of these cases were perpetrated by people in trust positions, with families and religious leaders occupying polar positions.
With cases and news assaulting the public sensibility almost on a daily basis, from newspaper headlines in recent times, this might not be an outlandish claim. Lagos Police PRO, Ms Dolapo Badmos may have put it succinctly, when she said, “The concern  the command is having at the moment is of people, who claim to be religious leaders. They hide under the fact that they are religious leaders to perpetrate domestic violence in the state.”
To underline its concern, the Lagos State Government, led by no other person than the number one citizen of the state, Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode, recently led an ‘All Male Walk’ campaign to sensitise the public on the need to tackle the unwholesome trend in the society.
But why religious leaders? Are the cases really on the increase?

Reported cases involving pastors

One example is of 31-year-old pastor Olabode Sunday, who allegedly raped a job seeker on a church altar during vigil, only to tell her that by the act, her prayers had been answered by God.
The incident which happened in Ilorin, Kwara State, shocked residents of Tanke area, where the church is located. The victim, Funke (other names withheld), 25, who had just concluded her National youth’s service went to the pastor for prayers to pave the way for her to get a job, but midway into the vigil, the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) pastor allegedly forced himself on the hapless girl and raped her.

Sunday, who was remorseful afterwards, blamed the devil for his action. His outraged church members said the incident was unfortunate, saying by choosing the altar of all places to perpetrate his satanic act, he had dented the image of the church.
In Edo State, another pastor, of the Pentecostal sect, allegedly raped a 12-year-old choir member of his church at Afuda-Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area.
The little girl (name withheld) had gone to church for choir rehearsals, but while awaiting other choir members, the pastor, who is also founder of the church, called her into his office and carried her on his laps. Thereafter, she said, he began to suck her breast and dip his finger into her private part before raping her. The incident caused her to bleed from her private part, as a result of injuries sustained. But when accosted, the pastor told her father that he was only carrying out deliverance on the victim.
In Ibadan, Pastor Isaiah Ojo, founder Dayspring Family Chapel, Egbeda area, Ibadan, allegedly took a seven-year-old daughter of his friend and fellow pastor, Bidemi (not real name), laid her on the church altar, and proceeded to have carnal knowledge of her.
According to the report published by a national newspaper (not The Nation), the incident took place on Monday, May 9, 2016, but the little girl bled for almost a week, as she was said to still be bleeding by the 13th day of that month.
In a bizarre attempt to defend himself, the pastor said “On Monday May 9, I was in my church premises when she came with her brother. The girl went to lie on the rug on the altar and told her brother that her private part was itching, asking him to come and lay on her. They used to play on the rug before then.
“I went near them to ask what was wrong with her. I had to use my hand to help her scratch her private part. After that, the girl said: “Daddy Dayspring, come and lay on me also. When I moved nearer, I could not do anything with her; I did not insert my p*nis in her v*gina.
“What happened next was that I brought my penis out but I could not penetrate her because her vagina was tight. My intention was to touch her, not to damage her. When I saw that her vagina was very tight, I withdrew my penis and left. There was no blood at that time. I don’t know how blood came out of her.”
In Akwa Ibom State, a 60-year-old pastor, who doubled as a traditional healer, Udo Job was arrested for raping a 14-year-old daughter of one of his patients.
The girl had gone to visit her sick father in Job’s care, when he lured her into his inner chamber and forcibly defiled her, after sending her mother to the market.
In Awka, Anambra State, yet another pastor, of a Pentecostal church, Jesus Miracle Ministries, is on the run after he sexually assaulted a 13-year-old boy, allegedly.
According to a source, the pastor, who is said to be gay, was told by a native doctor that he would be cured of his homosexuality, if he slept with a male teen.
Narrating his ordeal, the victim (Abuchi) said the incident took place after a vigil service. The boy who hails from Ebonyi State said, “The pastor approached me after the vigil and asked me to stay back. I told the pastor that I wanted to go home since the church activities had ended but he said I must wait till dawn.
“When I insisted, he rubbed a substance on my eyes which made me sleep. When I woke up, I noticed that my trousers were torn, and my anus was damp. I began to cry, as I was feeling pains in my anus. The pastor said I should stop crying, that he would give me money. I rejected the money offer and went home and told my people what happened,” he said.
In Anambra State, another pastor was nabbed for raping a 13-year-old girl during the church’s night vigil.
The pastor, with a new generation Pentecostal church, was identified as Nzube Ohuama. The young victim had gone with her parents to the church for the monthly vigil, when the pastor lured her into a private room attached to the church and raped her.
It was also reported that Ohuama had earlier prophesied to the girl’s parents three days before the incident that she was being tormented by an evil spirit, hence the need for a special deliverance prayer.

Muslim Clerics not left out

40-year-old Islamic cleric, Abdullah Omobolaji reportedly took advantage of a teenager, Idowu (not real name), having sex with her several times between November 2014 and March 2015, when the act was discovered by the girl’s mother.
The cleric, who has since been arrested, was said to have raped her in his consultation house on Bakare Lane, Agege.
According to a newspaper report, the cleric lived in Abule Egba, but had a room apartment on Bakare Lane, where he received clients for spiritual help.
Report said that Omobolaji also beat  the girl’s mother up, when  she confronted him.
Speaking of her ordeal to the Punch, the victim said she could not muster the courage to tell anyone about her experience because Alfa had threatened that she would die if she did.
According to the victim, “It started in November, 2014 when Alfa Abdullahi called me and said I should always come to meet him if I needed anything, since my dad was dead and my mum was unable to cater for all my needs.
“Later, he told me that he had seen a vision, adding that a man had placed an evil mark on me. He asked me to rinse my hand with cold water, which he put on fire. When the water finally boiled and I brought it down, I saw two cowries and a ring in the water. Alfa said that was what the man put inside my body and he (Alfa) was the only man that could remove the evil mark from me. He said he must sleep with me three times; and that was how he slept with me.
“He said I must never tell anyone what happened between us, and that if I did, I would die like my father did a few years back.”
Idowu said a few days afterwards, the suspect called her and asked her to buy an egg. He was alleged to have instructed the victim to rub her body with the egg.
“Then he said I should break it. I found seven needles in the egg. Alfa then said he would have to sleep with me seven times. I pleaded with him not to since he only recently slept with me three times, but he insisted,” she added.
The teenage girl told newsmen that the Islamic cleric after sleeping with her seven more times, continued to pressure her for more sex.
However, a relative of the suspect, who did not reveal his name, said there was no truth in the allegation, adding that Alfa and the victim were dating.

In Ogun State, a 24-year-old Dubai returnee was rescued from the custody of an Islamic cleric five months after he allegedly abducted her from the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos.

The suspect, Olalekan Anifowoshe, aka Alfa, was said to have kept the victim, Simbiat (not real name), in his rented apartment in the Atan-Ota area of Ogun State and allegedly had repeated sex with her during the period.

The suspect, who is said to be married with three children, resided in Surulere but kept Simbiat in Atan.

The woman was said to have consulted him in 2013 for help over a spiritual attack before travelling to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. She explained that after receiving a call from Alfa on January 11, 2016, instructing her to come back to Nigeria, she lost her senses and returned to the country immediately.
Simbiat told journalists that Alfa had slept with her for at least 10 times, adding that anytime she demanded to see her parents, he would beat her up and boast that she had reached her “final destination.”
Explaining how she met ‘Alfa,’ She said, “Sometime in 2013, I had a dream that a man made love to me. A friend introduced me to him and he gave me a piece of white cloth with Arabic inscriptions to cover my body whenever I wanted to sleep, which I used. Some months later, I travelled to Dubai.
“On January 11, he called me on the telephone to come home. It was like a spell. I packed my things and arrived in Lagos the following day without telling my parents. He picked me at the airport and took me to his apartment in the Aboru. After some time, he relocated me to Atan-Ota, where he was eventually arrested. He beat me anyhow and slept with me.”
The suspect allegedly owned up to the allegations in his statement to the police, promising to refund the money. He said “It is true I cast a spell on her to come back to Nigeria. She was living with me and I slept with her occasionally….”
Another case involving an Islamic cleric is that of a 42-year-old man, Wasiu Lawal, who raped a 38-year-old woman on the pretext of helping her spiritually.
The accused, who claimed to be a pastor, native doctor and a Muslim cleric (alfa), forcefully had sexual intercourse with the woman under the guise of “praying” for her.
On her part, the woman said she did not know how she ended up sleeping in the man’s house till the next day. She said the next day, she narrated the story to her husband, who reported the matter at Ikorodu police station, which led to Lawal’s arrest.
It was discovered that the accused used one room for pastoral work, the second room to consult as an herbalist and the third one for Islamic consultations.

Human Rights Activists speak

Reacting to the trend, Itoro Eze-Anaba, founder, Mirabel Sexual Assault and Referral Centre, in a chat with The Nation, said “I think pastors, imams and all those religious persons are also part of the society, and they wield certain level of influence on these worshippers, so they tend to exploit them.”
She noted that this exploitation is further fuelled by the peculiarity of our society, “where we are taught not to challenge authority. For instance, a clergy man tells you that God has ordained his sperm to make you pregnant, and you believe it? It’s crazy!”
Eze-Anaba said “rape is rape, whether it is perpetrated by a gang of robbers, an older sibling, uncle, neighbour, street urchin, imam or pastor. Someone once shared with me how she was raped by a bishop. She did not even know how to go about the matter. How was she to say that this ‘respected man of God’ raped her?”
Eze-Anaba said it is difficult for rape victims of spiritual leaders to report their violations, adding that the reason is not far-fetched. “She might even get victimised just for talking about it. Like I said, these are also a reflection of what goes on in the larger society. It is easier not to believe such stories, and much easier to keep quiet and not talk about it, especially when an adult is involved. But if it’s a child, there’s this outrage, and everybody is horrified.”
Asked if the centre has handled any such case in recent times, Eze-Anaba’s response was an emphatic “Yes.”
She continued, “We have had such cases where the choirmasters, pastors, those people in charge of the church building, like the Catholic Church, abused female members of the church. Actually, in a recent incident, it was the Catholic Church that took the step to report. We have a lot of them that are being abused.”
But are the cases really of manipulations or consensus? Eze-Anaba said: “They know what they are doing. A rapist grooms his victims and knows the best time to carry out his evil deed. That’s why 90 percent of survivors know their rapists. They make the plan over time and look for the opportunity to do it. Rape doesn’t just happen overnight.”
Speaking on the increased cases of rape in the media in recent times, she said it is now more in the news because more victims are now coming forward and reporters are doing their job.
“For us, we’d rather say there is an increase in reporting rape cases. And then there’s also more awareness and more people are beginning to speak up. People are beginning to have confidence in the system, and are therefore talking more about it.”
On how the tide can be stemmed, the rights activist said, “Rape flourishes in silence. A rapist would often threaten his victims. For instance, he can tell a child, ‘If you say anything to anybody, your mother or father will die.’ The child then keeps quiet because she’s afraid for her parents. But the minute that child speaks up, the abuse ends. So, we need to break the silence, we need to begin to talk about it, we need to shout at the top of our voices. If you shout, the rapist runs. You see, a rapist will go after a child that is quiet, vulnerable. He will hardly go after a child that talks because he is afraid she will tell it to the whole world. But he’s comfortable going after the one that is quiet, the bookworm, the nice girl, the one that is withdrawn and keeps to herself; the one that just does what she’s asked to do by an adult without asking questions. That kind of child is easily silenced.”
Apart from breaking the silence, Eze-Anaba said “Parents need to teach their children, both boys and girls, about sexuality, sexual abuse and rape. They need to teach the girl child to know that there are people out there that can bring harm to them, including their brother or his friends. They also need to teach their male children to respect women, that they are human beings with rights, and this, beginning with his sister."
The Mirabel Foundation works with the police in ensuring the prosecution of perpetrators; but Eze-Anaba laments the slow prosecution process. “Prosecution is slow actually because it takes some time for the police to complete their investigation, before sending it to the EPP for advice. The people will now respond, it will now go to court. But by and large, we also have clients whose cases have been successfully heard within six months.
Speaking on the huge following of these pastors even after they have been convicted of sexual offences, the Mirabel founder said, “If a pastor that’s supposed to teach you about God now turns to a rapist, I don’t need to teach you what to do. It’s obvious that that man is a criminal, and I see no reason why you should listen to a criminal. If you know your pastor is raping members of the church, and you don’t report the matter to the appropriate authorities, then you become an accomplice to the man. A lot of worshippers are in denial. They are ready to defend their clergy men to the last. They accuse the rape victims of being the ones who manipulated or seduced those so called men of God.”
Bose Ironsi of Women Rights and Health Project (WRAHP) on her part, believes that clergymen who take advantage of their followers, lack spirituality. She said if they are truly spiritual, they would not be involved in such crimes. She also believes that people place too much trust in fellow men.
“In a sane world, we should trust our clergy men, but unfortunately happenings around us are dictating otherwise. People should not trust easily especially when it comes to issues of that nature. But it’s becoming so disheartening. If a mother can be raped, what happens to innocent children?”
Speaking with so much disgust in her voice and expression, Ironsi said, “Unfortunately, we have so many people who wear the garb of religion, look pious on the outside, but are all rotten within.”
To the parents, Ironsi said, “We need to raise our children to understand some of these things that are happening. Some mothers still feel very shy to discuss these things with their children, both male and female. Many parents know how to tell the girls not to have sex and get pregnant, but find it very difficult to tell the boy not to have sex or get the girls pregnant. And there’s something about a girl being a virgin, but the boy can be wayward.”
Ironsi strongly believes that adults who sexually assault young people or even female adults do so because of what she termed, power control. “It’s also about power control. It is the desire to control people. It’s just like you see a policeman with a gun. He has power and wants to intimidate you. So also is this pastor or religious person, who has been given that power to preside over a particular number of people, so he wants to influence them. These are the issues.”
Ironsi has a word for mothers; “I think mothers should be vigilant. Some of us are weak because of certain circumstances we find ourselves. Some of us are even coming from abuse, we were raped by our cousins, brothers, and so sometimes when some things are happening you just discover that you cannot really deal with it. But thank God people are now coming out to speak up. Pastors will tell you they will pray for you so that you can have a child. How can you pray for me? Is it by having sex with me?”
Asked how clergymen who have not had their hands soiled can help the society, Ironsi said, “I think first of all, let the congregation be alert to what these bad clergy men are involved in; and let them not cover them up. Again, let those who are still responsible among them speak up against what the act. They shouldn’t keep quiet. They shouldn’t say because he’s an imam or a pastor, then they won’t speak against their fellow clergymen. That’s stupidity because it will rub off on all of them. Look at it, they’re talking about corruption now, and what they say is that Nigerians are corrupt. But is it every Nigerian that is corrupt? Is it not rubbing on every one?
Should there be stiffer punishment? Ironsi sounded a little sceptical at first, but then said unequivocally that such ‘holy’ perpetrators of rape should be made to face the music. “People are doing all sorts in the name of God because they know that Nigerians are religious people. But when such cases are reported, the law should be allowed to take its course, no matter the calibre of the person involved, be he a pastor or an imam. If they are guilty, let them face the law.”
Asked if the recent increase in sexual assaults on minors may not be a result of mental inbalance in the perpetrators, Ironsi responded rather irritated: “There’s no mental illness anything. Let anybody not try to hide under the cover of mental illness. It is not even the devil, because he’s sitting down quietly somewhere and they go and invite him. Like I told you earlier, it’s a show of power. They play on the vulnerability of these children because they know the children can’t resist them. If those children could resist them, then they won’t try it. You will discover that sometimes when they want to rape a child who can resist them, they are often more than one.”

Ironsi finished off with a pointed message: “People should speak out against all that is wrong.”

Forbe Classification Puts Amancio Ortega as the Richest Man in the World Ahead of Bill Gate

Forbes latest release shows American billionaire, Bill Gates has been beaten to the top position of the richest man in the world by an European entrepreneur.

Amancio Ortega (Left)

Bill Gates has for years been the richest man in the world with his mega business Microsoft being one of the most influential companies in the world, but he’s no longer the world’s richest man.
That title goes to Amancio Ortega and he is the owner of Zara chain of retail stores. Zara has been a staple in the clothing business with their shops dotting almost every shopping complex everywhere in the world.
The Spaniard’s company Inditex who own Zara enjoyed a 2.5% boost on their shares which in turn boosted Ortega’s fortune to $79.5 billion Forbes reports.
This pushes him past Bill Gates who is at  $78.5 billion. What makes Ortega remarkable is that very few people have heard of him, he isn’t in the spotlight much and is very serious about his private life. The 80-year-old founded fast-fashion giant Zara with his then-wife Rosalia in 1975.
Inditex SA, a retail company which owns Zara, Massimo Dutti, and Pull&Bear - has over 6,600 outposts around the world.

Below are a few facts that should be known about Ortega:

Amancio Ortega is the richest man in the world, with a net worth estimated at $79.5 billion.
This is his second wife, Flora. The couple has been married since 2001.
In August 2013, his ex-wife and Zara co-founder, Rosalia Mera, died at 69. She was Spain’s richest woman.
This is his daughter, Marta. The socialite is married to top Spanish equestrian Sergio Álvarez Moya.
Ortega and his wife live in a discreet apartment building in La Coruña, Spain, near a major port of the Atlantic Ocean.
Kate Middleton is a huge fan of Zara’s designs and is often photographed in its clothing.
Ortega is known for being private. In 2012, Bloomberg noted that he had only granted interviews to three journalists.
He also dresses modestly. He usually wears a simple uniform of a blue blazer, white shirt, and gray pants - none of which are Zara products.
In his free time, Ortega enjoys horseback riding and owns an equestrian center in Finisterre in Galicia, Spain.
He goes to the same coffee shop every day and eats lunch with his employees in the company cafeteria. Here’s a picture of Zara’s headquarters.
He also bought the tallest skyscraper in Spain, the Torre Picasso in Madrid. The building stands 515 feet and cost $536 million.
He owns The Epic Residences and Hotel in Miami, considered to be one of the best luxury hotels in the US.
Ortega drives an Audi A8 luxury sedan that is said to be more about comfort than luxury.
He also owns The Global Express BD-700, a private jet designed by Bombardier, one of the leading
manufacturers of luxury private jets. The plane carries a price tag of $45 million.
But he rarely jets off on vacation. He says he loves working too much to take time off.

EFCC Makes Decision on Former Nigerian First Lady's $15 Million Saga

EFCC is prepared to claim the stray $15 million found in a bank account linked to Patience Jonathann - wife of former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission says it is heading to court to file an application seeking the total forfeiture of $15,591,700, belonging to former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
Patience Jonathan
The money is currently lodged in the Skye Bank account of four companies: Pluto Property and Investment Company Limited; Seagate Property Development & Investment Company Limited; Trans Ocean Property and Investment Company Limited and Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited.
The EFCC had frozen the four accounts, which were linked to a former Special Adviser to the President on Domestic Affairs, Waripamowei Dudafa.
However, Jonathan’s wife had claimed in a sworn affidavit that the money in the four accounts belonged to her even though there is no paper evidence to establish a link between her and the companies.
She also urged the court to compel the EFCC to lift the restriction on the accounts. The EFCC had arraigned the four companies on Thursday and the companies pleaded guilty to money laundering charges.
Punch quoted a senior EFCC official as saying that the commission would subsequently apply for the total forfeiture of the funds.
“The four companies, in whose accounts the monies were lodged, have pleaded guilty to money laundering. We are therefore filing an application, seeking the complete and total forfeiture of the money to the Federal Government.
“The $15,591,700 should go (be deposited in) into the Treasury Single Account of the Federal Government of Nigeria,”
Punch quoted the EFCC source as saying.

The Phenomenon Called Jiberu, The Nightmare to Nkambe Farmers

Mallam Jiberu
Mallam Jiberu, is a famous grazier at Njipmtoh (in Nkambe Central). What makes him the most pronounced grazier in Donga Mantung has remained a mystery.  He is known by all the administrators and civil servants in Nkambe as well as all the farmers of Njap, Tabenken and Nkambe. On September 13, over 200 women staged a Protest march in Nkambe that took them to the SDO's Office and back to DO's office. They were pointing accusing farmers at Jiberu. But Jiberu, few months ago told us that every time cattle destroy crops, farmers only look at him, "I am not the only one with cows at Njimptoh", he said. Seemingly, some high profile personalities in the area (including indigenes) have kept their cows with Jiberu. Sometimes ago, former Divisional Officer for Nkambe Central Mbinglo Francis was very honest to the point that he told some farmers that Jiberu is a whole pile of documents in his office and he is not sure that he will be the one to solve the problem. The answer to this is that Jiberu may have something that other graziers do not have. Ten years ago, women tripped naked and paraded infront of his house but few days later, he (Jiberu) on his way to Nkambe told some women going to the farm that he would love to see the second naked dance because he found it very interesting. Unrealistic, untenable and unbelievable but that's what the Fulani grazier wants to see. He identifies himself with the administration as a hero, trade in the dark with traditional rulers with fallen beef- and lives his imagination by giving politicians more verbs to use in lobbying for votes. “Vote me, and I will chase away Jiberu from Njimptoh”. It has to be said, that his personal life as a cattle breeder also has a role to play in his image. His reputation as a bad man ( as seen by farmers and good man as seen by other cattle rearers) also has contributed in no less way in adding to his persona that in 2015, some farmers in Nkambe donated money to chase his cattle away ( to which area) yet the money collected has remained an untold story that ended with him on top. Does Jiberu bear the name of other graziers in Nkambe? That is the 5FCFA question!!

However, with increasing tempers flaring, the hidden mask that keeps Jiberu on top may soon fall off as women go sticks in hand, rappers rapped for an epic battle to end farmer/grazier conflict at Njimptoh.

Farmer/Grazier Conflict: Nkambe Women March to SDO and DO, Threaten to Go Naked

The problem between farmers and graziers in Nkambe which has existed for several years reached its crescendo this week. This time, over two hundred women in Nkambe (Binju neighborhood) took to the street last September 13, 2016 to express their anguish over the destruction of crops by cattle. The women staged a three kilometers walkaton protest march from the Divisional Hotel (Binju) to the office of the Senior Divisional Officer for Donga Mantung and back to the office of the Divisional Officer for Nkambe.

They cried out loudly that year in, year out, their crops are being destroyed by cows at the Njimptoh farmlands by cattle. “We are saying that enough is enough. We wrestle with cattle when the crops are young, after harvest, cows come and destroy the barns and it contain. We want the administration to look into this issue immediately”, Njeba Patience exploded. The farmers are pointing accusing fingers at the notorious grazier Mallam Jiberu.  The women expressed worries that the herdsmen, most of them also youths, (children of Mallam Jiberu) are have armed themselves with knives and other lethal weapons ready to kill anyone that challenges the invasion of farmlands by cows at Njimptoh. Mallam Jiberu is a phenomenon in Nkambe, yet the women charged that Jiberu is not the only one with cows. “We know they are administrators, traditional rulers and even politicians here who have kept their cows with Jiberu. We are telling them that if a lasting solution is not found, we will go traditional, we will go naked”, Nformi Comfort cried out.
Matter came to a head when the women girded their wrappers, tied their babied on their backs and holding sticks in their hands then marched to the office of the Senior Divisional Officer for Donga Mantung. While at the esplanade of the Senior Divisional Officer, the over 200 women staged a sit-down strike for close to two hours before moving to the office of the Divisional Officer where they were received by the Assistant Divisional Officer.  The women said that they would rather die on their defending the future of their families than fold their hands to die in silence.
They denounced how the administration has connived with graziers to collude the fruits of their labour by collecting colossal bribes from the graziers at their expense. “We may not be able to pay school fees, hospital bills or meet our needs because our crops are being destroyed. We have no other source of revenue with which to feed our families, sent their children to school and take care of their health”, Mbunkur Theresa reminded the Assistant Divisional Officer for Nkambe Central, Ebessong Benjamin.
In an attempt to calm down flaring tempers, Ebessong Benjamin called on the women to go back to their homes, asking them to choose their leaders to attend a crisis meeting that could see the tail end of the problem. He said he will also summon all the graziers to the meeting to sort out remedial measure. “Henceforth if cows in that area destroy crows or farmland and no grazier owns up, all those who are rearing cows at Njimtoh will collectively pay”, he concluded.
The women however vowed that if the administration does not final a lasting solution, they will go traditional. Panic is said to have gripped cattle breeders (including the famous Jiberu) as to what the women have in their sleeves. Before leaving the office of the Divisional Officer for Nkambe Central, they continue to point accusing farmers at Jiberu. But Jiberu, few months ago told us that every time, cattle destroy crops, farmers only look at him, "I am not the only one with cows at Njimptoh", he said. Seemingly, some high profile personalities in the area (including indigenes) have kept their cows with Jiberu. Politicians have maintained sealed lips only to jump out at the end to make political capital, the administration and law enforcement officials are quiet waiting for the opportune moment to grab big money, while the elite(s) continue to play the game of the ostrich. The women selected to sit in the committee are Njeba Patience, Nformi Comfort, Mbunkur Theresa, Nsagha Agnes, Tamfu Victorine and Monie Irene.

Mayors Write to PM Yang, Decry Ploy by Finance Minister to Paralyse Councils, FEICOM

The United Cities and Councils (UCCC) North West Region has called on Prime Minister, Head of Government to intervene and salvage the sad and precarious situation in which the Ministry of Finance and its principles of “UNICITIES” have placed the councils and FEICOM.

In the letter dated August 30, 2016, North West mayors expressed disgust over the nonpayment of Council Additional “centimes” and CAC. To them, the delay causes council workers to go for months without salaries. “We are also afraid of the delays in the payment of salaries to Municipal authorities”, they emphasized.
The mayors also reiterated that when councils were under FEICOM disbursement was prompt and timely but “in the absence of this practice of “unicite de caisse”, council accounts never suffered the delays in subvention transfers that are the order of the day today”.
NW mayors in the letter to Prime Minister Yang Philemon also lamented that today it is sad that since FEICOM sent transfers for councils in July, the Ministry of Finance has sat on them. They suggested that FEICOM be authorized to function as the council autonomous bank if transfer of competence to councils is to make sense. They expressed fears that if remedial measures are not taken, FEICOM may finally end up in the doldrums as one of the white elephant projects of government with excellent intentions but marred by human negligence and deficiencies. In the concluding statements North West mayors expressed disgust over the maltreatment that could erode and frustrate grass root development yet prayed on the Prime Minister to help the powerless council leaders voted by the people in their task in fostering development in rural areas nationwide.

The Top 10 Poorest Countries in the World are All from Africa (See 2016 List)

The 10 poorest countries in the world unfortunately all comes from Africa and are suffering deeply of hunger and starvation.
Burundi is the second poorest country in the world

As cliché as it may be, many believe that money makes the world go round. Upon second thought, this notion really doesn’t seem to be too farfetched at all. In general, some of the most powerful people in the world tend to be the richest ones, and some of the richest people in the world tend to become some of the most powerful.
Whether an accurate unit of measurement or not, a multitude of people around the world will end up defining their success through the money they’ve made throughout their lives. If not anything else, money is an easy unit of measurement to work with because it’s probably the only directly quantifiable measure of success there is.
With all of being said, quite possibly the only thing as powerful as having money, is lacking it. There is such an obvious disparity between rich and poor all over the world. Furthermore, even the definition of the word “poor” is relative to the context and location. Having money can surge a nation forward, while not having it can hold a nation back.
To see just exactly how powerful this is, here are the Top 10 Poorest Countries in the World.

10 – Guinea (GDP per capita of $523.10)

Typically, the wealth of a country is measured by its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita, which is the purchasing power of all goods and services produced in a country, divided by its population. In essence, this defines the purchasing power of a single person within the country. To begin this list is Guinea, with a GDP per capita of $523.10. Guinea hasn’t seen a period of economic stability since the 1990’s, when their mining and agricultural industries did them well. Since then however, Guinea has fallen victim to sever sociopolitical crises, which rapidly decayed the state of their economy. Much of their economy is still largely based on agriculture, which is difficult because farmers only have access to outdated information and obsolete technology, as investors tend to shy away from the nation entirely.

9 – Ethiopia (GDP per capita of $505.00)

Interestingly enough, Ethiopia has historically been a relatively wealthy nation. Although today, and throughout recent years, this really hasn’t been the case. To its credit, Ethiopia theoretically has the right practices in place. They’ve been undergoing a large political reform, one of the benefits of which is the supposed facilitation of economic growth and stability. In fact, since 2007, Ethiopia has places itself above many sub-Saharan African nations in terms of its economic performance. Although regardless of this, it remains one of the poorest nations in the world, only holding a GDP per capita of $505.00. This is a result of Ethiopia’s large population, and dependence on a poorly funded, underdeveloped, and vulnerable agricultural industry as a staple in their economy.

8 – The Gambia (GDP per capita of $488.60)

Next on the list is The Gambia, both one of the African continent’s smallest and The Gambiapoorest nations. With an area of roughly 11,000 square kilometers, and a population of roughly 1.8 million people, The Gambia struggles immensely with trying to make economic leaps forward. Although there are multiple factors to consider, what is likely their biggest hindrance is the lack of diversity within their economic system. The Gambia relies primarily, and almost solely, on farming and fishing to drive their economy. Both of these are incredibly vulnerable to poor weather conditions. It also doesn’t help that the soil fertility of the farming land is typically low, further decreasing both the quantity and quality of seasonal yields. These alone causes several ripple effects towards their economy and the subsequent living conditions that the people of the nation have to endure. With a GDP per capita of $488.60, and over half of the population living well under the poverty line, the people of The Gambia are subject to such a poor standard of living that the nation falls into a “hunger season” when rainfall is at its peak.

7 – Democratic Republic of the Congo (GDP per capita of $484.20)

Directly juxtaposing the previous entry in the list, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is Africa’s second largest country, holding a staggering population of roughly 77 million people. A large population isn’t always a good thing however, as (especially with poorer nations) this just means there is less money to go around. What is even more intriguing about this case, however, is the fact that the Democratic Republic of the Congo is actually very rich in valuable natural resources. Similarly, the land expands over 2.35 million square kilometers, much of which is forests, although it also holds a great expanse of farmable lands and waters. In spite of all of these things, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been subject to a very unstable, corrupt political system that has been holding back the potential of the nation’s wealth drastically. As a result of this, with a GDP per capita of $484.20, a large portion of the nation’s people remain unemployed, and their lack of money thus results in their living within greatly inadequate living conditions.

6 – Madagascar (GDP per capita of $463.00)

Although this remains a list of the world’s poorest nations, some of the nations on this list are actually making progress in securing economic stability for themselves. Madagascar, unfortunately, is not one of these countries. Over the last 20 years, the standard of living within this island country has declined significantly. With a population of more than 20 million people, Madagascar has a GDP per capita of $463.00, with about 70 percent of the nation’s people living under the poverty line. Once again reliant primarily on agriculture, the vulnerability of the industry, lack of potent farming land, and the growing population only make their economic situation worse and worse over time.

5 – Liberia (GDP per capita of $454.30)

PovertyThe Second Liberian Civil war was a conflict within Liberia that lasted from 1999 all the way through 2003. A quick look at history will show that wars generally don’t leave involved nations economically intact as a result. Liberia is no exception to this. Having just been subject to a 14 year-long political conflict that not only ravaged lands, but also needed to make use of some of Liberia’s already finite resources, the nation was left economically crumbled by the civil war. It is also of no benefit that Liberia is, once again, primarily reliant on agriculture to drive its economy. The GDP per capita of the war-torn nation stands at $454.30, and in 2010, it was estimated that more than 80 percent of the nation’s people were living less with less than $1.25 per day. With low yields due to old farming technologies, as well as having overall poor infrastructure, Libera only marks the halfway point down this list of the poorest countries in the world.

4 – Niger (GDP per capita of $415.40)

Aside from being one of the world’s poorest, Niger stands as one of the world’s most underdeveloped nations across several categories. Although it continues to make developments in reducing infant mortality, and enhancing education, the development category of poverty has unfortunately remained rather stagnant, keeping the nation’s GDP per capita at $415.40. Niger’s economy is driven by two main forces: the extraction of valuable natural resources available within the nation (including gold, uranium, and even oil), and small-scale agriculture. Unfortunately, both of these economic sources can easily be devastated by random shifts in climate and weather, and thus Niger has struggled in developing themselves economically.

3 – Central African Republic (GDP per capita of $333.20)

Like Liberia, the Central African Republic has in the past been victim to war and Central African Republicsignificant political instability. The landlocked central African nation also supports very, very poor infrastructure, thus limiting the efficiency of the distribution of the nation’s resources. Furthermore, this nation also shares similarities with most other African nations in that its economy is mostly directed by agriculture, although an estimated 45 percent of the Central African Republic’s export revenues are from diamonds. However, because of the poor infrastructure and governance that the nation has to deal with, only about 4 percent of the actual arable land that the nation holds is actually used. As a result, the majority of the working population that works within the industry suffer immensely, holding the nation to a GDP per capita of $333.20.

2 – Burundi (GDP per capita of $267.10)

Having suffered from recurring violence and political disputes, it is no surprise that Burundi ranks as the second poorest nation in the world, even though the country is working tirelessly to rebuild itself. Aside from the estimated 300,000 civilian casualties resulting in a 67 percent poverty rate, the violent political rivalries were also detrimental to Burundi’s agricultural development. Even now, the nation ravaged by war holds very little farmable land, and any land that may be used for small-scale farming is still fragile due to the vulnerability to shifting climates and weather conditions. With the population growing rapidly, food prices rising, and a GDP per capita of $267.10, Burundi places as the second poorest country in the world.

1 – Malawi (GDP per capita of $226.50)

Holding a population of 16 million while also being one of the smallest African nation doesn’t set you up for accumulation or distribution of wealth. Arguable the most underdeveloped nation in the world, Malawi suffers greatly in essentially all categories available. Access to education, general standard of healthcare, infrastructure, and quality of living conditions are all limited or substandard. Because the nation is unable to develop in general, they’re for all intents and purposes stuck with trying to drive their economy using only the most primitive levels of agriculture. With common weather variations, as well as injuries and fatalities facilitated by poor health care, Malawi’s world lowest GDP per capita of $226.50 doesn’t seem like it will be rising too significantly any time soon.
Sometimes days may seem tough. Maybe things just didn’t go the way you want, or perhaps you’re frustrated with where your life stands currently. While many may have perfectly valid reasons for frustration, it is equally as important to take moments everyday to appreciate the reasons your life may be great. There’s privilege to be seen everywhere, even in something so simple as the internet connection required for you to have read this article.

Nigeria to Stop Government Officials from Performing Hajj

In what will come across as a rather interesting development, some officials may soon become unable to perform hajj.
File photo

A government representative, on Sunday, revealed that Nigerian government officials responsible for assisting pilgrims for the 2016 Hajj in Saudi Arabia may be stopped from performing the rites.
According to Premium Times, Abdullahi Mohammed, the chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON,  told journalists at the plains of Arafat in Saudi Arabia that officiating and performing hajj could be challenging.
“To officiate as well as perform hajj is difficult. We have done that in the past, and at the end of the day we all felt it in our body. Sometimes you don’t have the right state of mind to really do the needful in terms of performing your official functions,” he said.
Nigeria and other participating countries, alongside host Saudi Arabia, have implemented new policies to enhance pilgrims’ safety during the 2016 Hajj, following the death of more than 2000 people in accidents during the 2015 event.
Mr. Mohammed said NAHCON may also consider the next policy in the 2017 Hajj exercise.
“From next year, we will discuss with other stakeholders to find a way of making it as a policy in partial implementation and then gradually we will enforce it as a policy in the whole nation,” he said.
He also said even if Nigeria was not considering such a policy, the Saudi authorities will in the near future impose it.
“I am certain that even if we don’t do it as a nation, a time will come when the Saudi authorities will do it. If you are in the Kingdom for the purpose if observing Hajj, you observe it; and if you are an official who is supposed to officiate Hajj activity, they would not allow you to perform the Hajj and they would put that restriction,” he said.
Mr. Mohammed said the policy would help officials to perform optimally on their duties as it would help them monitor and assist pilgrims.
“This concept will not be restricted to only the staff of the commission or those who come under the it but will also go down to the states, because that is where the bulk of the work in terms of management of the Hajj is,” he said
