ENEO Set to Curb Rampant Power Cuts, Improve Quality Supply in Bda II

For some months now, Bamenda II municipality has recorded recurrent power cuts. This is so due to the ageing installations and electrical network supplies. To remedy the situation, the electricity supply company, ENEO KICK starts a rehabilitation plan in the Bamenda II Municipality aimed at replacing wooden poles with metal poles as well as the replacement of low quality transformers and their accessories.  Within the framework of the implementation of this programme, Eneo Cameroon in the Press Release issued by the Regional Delegate for North West informs its customers in Bamenda II that it would begin intensive works on Tuesday.
The Press Release further states that:” a powerful team of Eneo engineers and technicians as well as 8 of its partner companies have been mobilized to execute these works.
The works consists of:
-         planting 50 metal and wood poles
-         replacing 447 insulators
-         replacing 12 protection devices
-         Installing 20 new distribution transformers thereby replacing the former ones
-         Installing 35 crossarms
These works are going to improve on the service quality in the neighborhoods concerned notably by reducing the risks of drop in voltage in the localities concerned. Works will be executed in 3 phases. During the first phase from 16 to 18 May 2017 the neighborhoods and localities concerned are as follows: Ntaturu; Bali Parck; Azam; Nitop 2; Old Cenajes; CDE Mbatu; Travellers; Azeri New Church; Buea/Bamenda Street; Atuakum; Abango; New Bell; Metta Quartes; Atuazeri; Azeri Old Church; and Mbengwi Road.”
For safety purposes, the Regional Delegate for ENEO in the North West Region, Michel Mbopda further informs the population of these localities that they shall be deprived of electricity from 6am -7 pm. during operations, these localities will be deprived of electricity. This work, he emphasized in the statement “is part and parcel of Eneo Cameroon’s five-year investment plan that will be speed up in the North-West Region in view of the urgency of the situation, subject to the availability of funds. It should be recalled that a similar exercise took place in Nkambe where some wooden poles were replaced and the  old transformers changed. The rehabilitation helped in curbing electricity cuts and regularized voltage in the town.

Looking Glass: Nkambe-Ako Road Turns Deadly as Ghastly Accident Claims 1

I have often heard people say that it is forbidden to make a critical judgment analysis on the state of roads and that making such a critical judgment is like writing satanic verses that lead to divine sentence. But let the word go forth from this time and medium to the Minister of Public Works who is expected to launch some road projects in the North West region tomorrow May 16, 2017 that the stretch of road from Nkambe to Ako is calamity, calamity, calamity…. In fact it is the latest “dead trap” in the Division.
At about 11 am, today May 15, a Land Rover had a ghastly accident on that road claiming one life. The driver of the vehicle Bala Seidou died on the spot and was consumed by fire. The story goes that Bala Seidou was on his way to Berabe market with his usual customers. While at the Ntumbe in Kungi, the Land rover had breaks failure. He managed and hit it into the gutter due to the poor state of the road. The passengers who were in the car jumped out. Considering the gravity of the shock, the steering wheel blocked him. The vehicle caught fire and all attempts by the passenger to rescue the driver flopped. He was then consumed by fire.  This is however a dilemma as traveling from Nkambe to Ako is not just a nightmare but demands a week of serious fasting and prayer because you never know when you will get to your destination. The ghastly motor accident which occurred approximately 4 km away from Nkambe town tells the story of how bad the road is very bad ahead. Tongues are still waging in Nkambe over the accident as many have been wondering over the state of nature of that road.
However, anyone who would maladroitly declare that this road is not a necessity or a priority should be considered as being in a state of sin. Even though there is a statement in the Bible which states that people should not pass round for judges on others, I believe it is often quoted out of context because the Bible still tells us that people should be judged if their acts are injurious. I am aware that this critical judgment analysis is badly needed. It is imperative because the people of Donga Mantung are in tears again and the bells of anguish are being heard signaling that Ako may cease to exist in the map of this country due to the state of nature of the road. That is tragic but a kind of insane horror like this road which sometimes ago, the Member of Parliament for Ako Hon. Abe Michael, the Mayor of Ako Council Akio Augustine and the Divisional Officer decided to go up to the road to carryout road maintenance with hand tools. The present state of nature of this will will soon make Ako Sub division an Island on land. Yet the economic potentials of Ako cannot be neglected. Ako is the breadbasket to Donga Mantung Division and environs. It is the citadel of palm oil and by-products. It is rich in non timber forest products and more so oranges, maize and cocoa is cultivated in large scale in the area. Besides, Ako custom post used to generate the highest revenue in the region. With the present state of nature, it is feared everything is declining. More so, speculations are high at that more than 75% of farm produce in that area may end up in a waste due to lack of access road as it has turned into a dead trap.

Macron Dribbles Book Makers, Names Edouard Philippe New PM

New Prime Minister of France

President Emmanuel Macron who was installed yesterday has named Edourd Philippe as France’s new Prime Minister. The 46 years old mayor of the Northern Port of Le Havre is a Centre-right republican yet won Macron’s confidence for the top job.  It should be noted that Philippe is said to be a right hand man to Alain Juppe. Before he became mayor, he is said to have worked in the private sector and co-wrote a political thriller with Gilles Boyer. His appointment to the top job has watered down speculations and expectations that President Emmanuel Macron was going to name woman as Prime Minister. However, reports say there is diversified political opinion over Philippe’s appointment. BBC Website quotes Alain Juppe as saying that the new PM is “man of great talent”. Yet Republican party Secretary General Bernard Accoyer has a different view, “ will this new Prime Minister support the President’s En March candidates or candidates of his political family”, he is quoted to have asked.

Arsenal Fans Wage War Against Arsene Wenger

Arsenal fans in the United Kingdom are currently mounting massive pressure on the leadership of the North London club to axe Arsene Wenger over the horrendous performance of the club in the English Premier League this season.

Arsene Wenger

Arsene Wenger has called on Arsenal fans to turn out in force for Tuesday’s game against Sunderland rather than take part in a boycott designed to hasten his removal as manager of the London giants.
The veteran French boss has still to announce if he will be staying at the Emirates Stadium when his current contract expires at the end of the season.
The Gunners have just three games left before their campaign concludes — two in the Premier League against Sunderland and Everton before an FA Cup final newly-crowned champions and London rivals Chelsea.
In marked contrast to the Blues, Arsenal have not won the English title since 2004 and Wenger has come under renewed pressure this season with his side in danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League.
Arsenal have finished in the top four of every full season since Wenger took charge 21 years ago but, after Liverpool’s 4-0 win at West Ham on Sunday, they now need slip-ups from either the Merseysiders or Manchester City to help them maintain that proud record.
This season has already seen a number of ‘Wenger out’ protests by supporters groups, including planes flying over grounds carrying messages urging the 67-year-old to quit and marches before games, with some empty seats visible at recent Emirates fixtures.
Now there are calls for a mass boycott of Tuesday’s match at home to Sunderland. But Wenger, who yet again refused to comment on his Arsenal future, said Monday: “My message is always the same, it is to support the team.
A statement on onlinegooner.com suggested that Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone or Juventus’s Max Allegri would now be better at managing Arsenal than Wenger.
The statement then asked fans not to turn up at the game against the Black Cats.

Five Reasons Many Women Nowadays are Scared of Getting Married

While some look forward to the day when they get to say "I Do" and daydream about walking down the aisle beside Mr Right, some dread the very idea of forming a perpetual union.

File photo

Saying the words “I do” could be very frightening for some women. The reasons, why women are scared of getting married, vary from person to person.
 Below are five of them.

1. Emotional and financial insecurity
These can be argued as two major reasons any woman would dread the idea of marriage. The tendency for the blazing fire of love between them and their partners to dwindle over time scares women a lot.
The questions – Will he love me still when I get bloated from the rigours of childbirth? What if some days we run out of things to say and the conversation dries up? What happens if he becomes financially unstable? – and much more worry many a woman.

2. Fear of commitment
Till death do us part! The thought of having to succumb to the authority of a man, dedication to a long-term cause, giving birth and raising children, keeping up with relatives and in-laws, taking care of the home, the opportunities forgone to stick to one person; and combining all of these with work, makes marriage seem scary to some women.

3. Career pursuit
Some women are literally married to their jobs – so what’s the need for a man.
They dedicate more of their time to their profession and climbing the ladder of success, often neglecting their emotional needs and those of their partners.
For them, marriage will create a lacuna between them and work. Thus, they would rather remain single.

4. Fear of the unknown
Unarguably, the future is plagued with many uncertainties, and nature or perhaps fate has forced the human to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. The fear of what the future holds is a withdrawing force for women.

5. Risk of divorce
Some women, because of their not-too-good experience in broken homes or the stigma attached to being a divorcee, would rather remain single than get married and risk breaking up.

African America Goes Home After 39 Years in Prison for a Crime He Didn't Commit

An innocent man who was thrown into prison for allegedly murdering another man has been released after serving 39 years for a crime he didn't commit.

Ricky (middle) thanking his stars

Since 1989, 2,005 people have been exonerated from prison in the U.S. Ricky is one of those exonerated – after serving nearly 40 years for a crime he didn’t commit.
In 1975, a man was robbed and murdered in Ricky’s Cleveland neighborhood. Days later, armed police kicked in the door of the home where 18-year-old Ricky lived. Based on the testimony of one young boy who claimed to have witnessed the murder, Ricky and two of his friends were convicted of the crime and sentenced to death.
“To be sent to prison for something you didn’t do is so indescribable,” says Ricky now. “You have to fight every day to maintain the person that you are.” His mother told him, “Don’t them turn you into a prisoner.” She died while he was imprisoned. “I couldn’t even grieve for my mother because they had made me so callous,” Ricky laments.
Ricky believed that his case was forgotten, but the Ohio Innocence Project was fighting to discover the truth. The witness who testified that Ricky and his friends had committed the murder recanted and Ricky was released. “After 39 years, I was finally able to walk out.”
Ricky is the longest-serving prisoner to have been exonerated in the U.S. After his release, he met with his accuser, who is now a middle-aged man. “It was important for me to go to this guy and say, ‘I understand now.’ Because in a way, he was a victim just as much as we were,” Ricky says. “I wanted him to move on with his life, as I was going to move on with mine.”
Attorney Mark Godsey of the Ohio Innocence Project explains that it took years of effort to exonerate Ricky. Attorney Brian Howe had law students going door-to-door in the Cleveland neighborhood looking for witnesses who remembered the case. Mark is a law professor at the Cincinnati University College of Law and a former prosecutor. He says that, since its founding in 2003, the Ohio Innocence Project “so far we’ve freed 24 Ohioans who together have served 450 years in prison for crimes they didn’t commit.”
Mark also notes that in many of the cases the project investigates, the prisoners turn out to be guilty. “When we confirm guilt, that’s what we love,” he says – it means that the real perpetrator is behind bars.
Like other exonerated prisoners, including Nancy and Clarence who are also here to speak to The Doctors, Ricky still feels the trauma of his time in prison.

Pope Francis Creates the Unexpected, Canonizes Two Child Saints

After due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, Pope Francis has officially declared Francisco and Jacinta Marto saints of Catholic Church in a historic event.
Two child saints, Francisco & Jacinta

Pope Francis on Saturday officially declared Francisco and Jacinta Marto saints of the Catholic Church in front of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims at Fatima, Portugal – teaching us that even young children can become saints.
“For the honor of the Blessed Trinity, the exaltation of the Catholic faith and the increase of the Christian life, by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, and of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and our own, after due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother Bishops, we declare and define Blessed Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto to be saints,” Pope Francis exclaimed May 13 as the crowd roared with applause.
“We enroll them among the Saints, decreeing that they are to be venerated as such by the whole Church. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.”
Pope Francis presided over their canonization Mass during his two-day pilgrimage to Fatima, Portugal May 12-13 to take part in celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the appearance of Our Lady of Fatima.
The brother and sister, Francisco and Jacinta, who tended to their families’ sheep with their cousin Lucia Santo in the fields of Fatima, witnessed the apparitions of Mary, now commonly known as Our Lady of Fatima.
In her message to the children, Mary brought with her requests for conversion, prayer (particularly the recitation of the rosary), sacrifices on behalf of sinners, and a three-part secret regarding the fate of the world.
The children followed Mary’s requests, praying often, giving their lunch to beggars and going without food themselves. They offered up their daily crosses and even refrained from drinking water on hot days.
With anti-Catholic sentiment very prevalent in the country, the mayor in the district of Fatima had grown suspicious of the growingly popular apparitions, and had unsuccessfully tried to get the children to renounce their story.
Wanting to stop the children from seeing the fourth apparition, Artur Santos, an apostate Catholic and high Mason who was the local mayor, devised a ruse to kidnap the children before the scheduled day of her appearance.
Despite bribes, threats of death by burning oil, and threatening to lock them in a cell with criminals, the children never recanted their story.
Convicted by Mary’s requests and the vision of hell, both children lived lives of prayer and penance after the apparitions, offering themselves for sinners as Mary had asked. Francisco was known for his devotion to the Eucharist and his strict physical mortifications, while Jacinta was especially known for having a heart for the poor and the suffering.
Both children fell victim to the influenza epidemic of 1918 that swept through Europe. In October 1918, Mary again appeared to the sick siblings and promised to take them to heaven soon. On April 3, 1919, Francisco declined hospital treatment for influenza and died the next day.
Jacinta was given hospital treatment in hopes of prolonging her life, but she knew that she would soon join Francisco in heaven. On February 19, 1920, Jacinta asked the hospital chaplain who heard her confession to bring her Holy Communion and administer the last rites, because she was going to die “the next night.” But the priest said that her condition was not that serious and that he would return the next day. The next day Jacinta was found dead – she had died in her sleep.
Pope John Paul II beatified Francisco and Jacinta May 13, 2000, on the 83rd anniversary of the first apparition of Our Lady at Fatima. Both under 12 years old, they were the youngest non-martyrs to be beatified in the history of the Church.
Sister Lucia, the third visionary, lived much longer, dying in 2005 at the age of 97. The Church is currently examining documents and collecting testimonies for her beatification cause.

Deadly Ebola Epidemic Makes a Comeback in DR Congo, 3 Reported Dead

An Ebola epidemic has been declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo with three people confirmed dead, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has said.

An Ebola outbreak has been declared in the northeast region of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The World Health Organisation says three deaths are being linked to the virus, and it is taking the situation "very seriously".
One of those killed had tested positive for Ebola after coming down with a haemorrhagic fever last month in Bas-Uele, a province which borders the Central African Republic.
WHO spokesman Christian Lindmeier has told Sky News that work is under way to find people who may have been in contact with the Ebola sufferer.
The health agency's regional director is also on their way to Bas-Uele, where residents are being given advice on how to treat their loved ones and perform safe burials.
Another WHO spokesman, Eric Kabambi, said: "The case is in a very remote zone, very forested, so we are a little lucky."

The DRC suffered a three-month outbreak of Ebola in 2014. Although it was quickly contained, 49 people were killed.
Ebola occasionally jumps from animals including bats and monkeys to humans - and without preventative measures, the virus can spread quickly between people.
The virus is fatal in up to 90% of cases, and the WHO recently developed an experimental vaccine for use in emergencies.
In a statement, the DRC's health ministry said: "Our country must confront an outbreak of the Ebola virus that constitutes a public health crisis of international significance."
Ebola caused alarm around the world in 2013 when the world's worst outbreak began in West Africa - killing more than 11,300 people and infecting an estimated 28,600 as it swept through Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.
Liberia was only declared free of active Ebola virus transmission last June.
The WHO had warned that the virus could resurface at any time, as it can linger in the eyes, central nervous system and bodily fluids of some survivors.

Nollywood Vibes: Mercy Aigbe Speaks on Her Husband's Detention

Yoruba actress and movie producer, Mercy Aigbe whose marriage has taken a nosedive due to alleged physical abuse has commented on the plight of her embattled hubby.

Mercy Aigbe

The saga in the home of the Gentrys seems to be far from over as star actress, Mercy Aigbe’s husband, Lanre Gentry was remanded in prison during the week for failure to meet his bail condition.
When Saturday Beats reached out to the ace actress, she made it known that she has nothing to do with her husband’s predicament. She explained that the matter was reported to the appropriate agencies and they are handling the case according to the law.
She said, “The case is no longer between my husband and I. It is now between the Office of Public Defenders, Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and my husband. The officer is the one handling the case.”
Aigbe in an emotionally laden voice said that she wants her husband to know the gravity of what he has done because till date, she is still coughing out blood due to the beatings she got from him. “I cannot be washing my dirty linen in public and that is why I do not want to go into details of my marriage.
"It is not in my place to send him to jail. I only reported to the appropriate authorities and I just need him to show remorse for what he has done to me. He does not know the gravity of what he has done to me, the pains that I feel right now and the trauma I have gone through. I am still in pains and I am bleeding internally because I am still coughing out blood. Instead of him to be remorseful, he was busy going online to say all sorts of things about me and concocting lies.
"He has been fabricating stories to taint my image because he knows I am the one with a reputation at stake. I intentionally did not say anything even though I have proof of everything I have to say. Instead of my husband to show some sense of responsibility and own up to what he did, he was busy dragging my name in the mud,” Aigbe said.

Emmanuel Macron Takes Office.... Excerpts from His Inauguration Speech

A new epoch has opened in the history of France as Macron, a political inspiration to the youth mounts the podium of power.

Emmanuel Macron during his inauguration

Emmanuel Macron, 39, has been inaugurated as France’s president and pledged to overcome division in societies. Macron, a centrist, took over on Sunday from President Francois Hollande, the socialist whose five years in power were plagued by stubborn unemployment and attacks.
Macron – France’s youngest ever president – beat his far-right rival Marine Le Pen to the presidency, winning more than 65 per cent of the May 7 vote.
“The whole world has watched our presidential election,” Macron said in his inaugural speech as president, which took place at the Elysee Presidential Palace.
He added that “the world and Europe have today, more than ever, a need for France. They want a France that is sure of its destiny.
“The world needs what French men and woman have always taught it — freedom, equality and fraternity.”
He said France was not in decline, but at the start of an “extraordinary renaissance”, adding that he would boost employment, protect companies and engage with French people who feel ignored.
“Republican secularism will be defended. We must find the deep meaning of what unites us today … France is only strong if it is prosperous.”
Francois Hollande is delighted at the election of the former investment banker. Hollande launched Macron’s political career, and brought him from the world of investment banking to be an advisor and then his economic minister.
“I am not handing over power to a political opponent, it’s far simpler,” Hollande said. Meanwhile, Macron is expected to reveal the closely-guarded name of his prime minister on Monday before flying to Berlin to meet German Chancellor, Angela Merkel.
It is virtually a rite of passage for French leaders to make their first European trip to meet the leader of the other half of the so-called “motor” of the EU. Pro-EU Macron wants to push for closer cooperation to help the bloc overcome the imminent departure of Britain, another of its most powerful members.

Here are quotes from Macron's inauguration speech:

– On France –
“The time has come for France to meet the challenges of our time. The divisions and fractures that run through our society must be overcome, whether they be economic, social, political or moral.”
The first of two priorities is “to give back to the French people the confidence that has been flagging for too long.”
“I can assure you I didn’t think for a single second that (the confidence) was restored as if by magic on the evening of May 7 (the night of his election victory). It will be slow, demanding but essential work.”
“I will convince our compatriots that France’s power is not in decline, but that we are at the dawn of an extraordinary renaissance because we have all the qualities which will make, and do make, the great powers of the 21st century.”

– On Europe and the world –
“The world and Europe need France now more than ever and they need a strong France with a sense of its own destiny.”
“We need Europe and it will be reformed and relaunched because it protects us and allows us to project our values in the world.”
“The world needs what French men and women have always taught it: the audacity of freedom, the demand for equality and the desire for fraternity.”

– On his predecessors –
General Charles de Gaulle “restored France’s place among the nations of the world”. Valery Giscard d’Estaing “helped France and French society enter the modern world”.
Francois Mitterrand “managed to reconcile the French dream and the European dream”. Jacques Chirac “showed we are a country able to say no to those rushing to war”.
Nicolas Sarkozy “spared none of his energy to resolve the financial crisis which hit the world so violently”.
François Hollande helped bring about the Paris climate warming agreement “and protected the French people in a world hit by terrorism”.

Sacking of FBI Director Sparks Controversy

The head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation has been relieved of his duties by the President Trump-led administration.

James Comey

President Donald Trump on Tuesday fired FBI director James Comey, ousting the man heading a wide-ranging investigation into whether his aides colluded with Russia to sway last year's US election.
In a shock move that drew comparisons to the Watergate scandal that brought down Richard Nixon, Trump told Comey the FBI needed new leadership and he was being "terminated" with immediate effect.
Under Comey's leadership, the FBI concluded that President Vladimir Putin approved a wide-ranging campaign to tilt the vote in Trump's favor.
His snap dismissal, ostensibly for mishandling a probe into Hillary Clinton's emails, sparked rare criticism from Republicans and allegations of a cover-up from seething Democrats who demanded an independent inquiry.
The high-stakes gambit also raised immediate comparisons to the ill-fated firings that sped the collapse of Nixon's presidency. Trump's decision to fire the FBI director is virtually unprecedented, only one director has previously been fired in the bureau's century-long history.
In a letter circulated by the White House, Trump told Comey: "You are hereby terminated and removed from office, effective immediately."
"It is essential that we find new leadership for the FBI that restores public trust and confidence in its vital law enforcement mission."

- 'Troubled' -

Trump also used the letter to try to distance himself from the ever-deepening scandal over Russia's involvement in the election.
"I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation," Trump wrote.
The White House said the search for a new FBI director was to begin right away. FBI directors are appointed for a single 10-year term. The 56-year-old Comey, who is popular among rank-and-file agents, was appointed four years ago.
The top Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said Trump had made a "big mistake."
"This does not seem a coincidence," he said.
Unless the administration appoints an independent special prosecutor to probe the Russian meddling, Schumer added, "every American will rightly suspect that the decision to fire director Comey was part on a cover-up."
Republicans, many of whom have fallen into line behind Trump after initial reluctance, also sought to distance themselves from the president.
"I am troubled by the timing and reasoning of Director Comey's termination," said Senator Richard Burr.
Congressman Justin Amash, a fellow Republican, described parts of Trump's letter to Comey as "bizarre" and announced "my staff and I are reviewing legislation to establish an independent commission on Russia."
Comey played an outsized -- and controversial -- role on the American political stage over the past year, lobbing one bombshell after another that rankled both parties in Washington.
The stated reason for his dismissal -- according to a memo from Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein -- was for mishandling the probe into Clinton's emails, which the Democrat blames for trashing her chances of becoming president.
Comey told lawmakers last week he felt "mildly nauseous" at the thought that he had swayed the election -- but could not have acted any other way.

- 'Nothing less than Nixonian' -

Since the start of Trump's presidency, the FBI chief had increasingly appeared to be a thorn in the president's side.
He recently confirmed the agency was investigating Russian interference in last year's presidential election and notably Moscow's possible collusion with Trump's campaign.
Democrats -- already angry that Congressional inquiries into Russian meddling have been hamstrung by Republicans' willingness to defend Trump -- voiced sharp concerns that the FBI's investigation may now be in jeopardy too, with several calling for an independent commission to take over the probe.
"This is nothing less than Nixonian," charged Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who called Trump's official justification for firing Comey "absurd."
"That fig leaf explanation seeks to cover the undeniable truth: The president has removed the sitting FBI director in the midst of one of the most critical national security investigations in the history of our country -- one that implicates senior officials in the Trump campaign and administration," he charged.
When Trump initially decided to keep Comey -- a Barack Obama appointee -- in his job, it raised eyebrows from critics who saw it as a tacit reward for his role in damaging Clinton's chances.
But within months, the FBI chief was back in the national spotlight -- this time taking aim at Trump. During testimony to Congress last month, Comey overtly challenged the president, flatly rejecting his explosive claim that he was wiretapped by his predecessor.
And despite Trump's dismissal of suggestions his team colluded with Moscow as "fake news," it had become increasingly clear that Comey had set his sights on the issue of Russia's election meddling, which has stalked Trump's presidency from the start.

Recent Relased of 82 Chibok Girls: United States Reacts

United States of America has commended the Nigerian government on securing the release of 82 Chibok girls after 3 years in captivity.

Some of the rescued Chibok girls
The release of 82 of the Chibok schoolgirls by their Boko Haram captors, after three years, is heart-warming, the U.S. government said.
The Deputy Director, Office of West African Affairs, Bureau of African Affairs at the U.S. Department of State, Mr. Nathan Holt, made the remarks  in Washington, D.C. via teleconference on: “Nigeria, a critical U.S. partner’’.
He said the release of the girls from captivity was also a positive development for them and their families.
“Many of you will have also followed the news of the release of the Chibok girls over the weekend.“Obviously, that was a heart-warming and positive development for the young women involved and for their families.“We’d like to point out that they’re among thousands of victims of Boko Haram and its offshoot, ISIS West Africa,’’ Holt said.
The U.S. envoy explained that his country was carrying out a lot of bilateral activities with Nigeria and multilateral cooperation, involving the UN. He noted that Nigeria had an influential voice on the African continent.
“Again, that’s an overview of where we are in a very important bilateral relationship for us.“I’d like to point out as well that we’ve worked together closely in the United Nations.“We’ve worked together on issues of arms proliferation and nuclear questions.“So, Nigeria has a voice in Africa that is quite influential. “I’ve worked on Africa for most of my professional career and it’s very good to be in a good place with this group.’’
Holt regretted that Boko Haram terrorists had brought untold consequences on the country and its neighbours. According to him, however, it is heart-warming that civilians, who have been displaced, are gradually gaining access to some of the recovered territories by military operations.
“One of the critical consequences of the Boko Haram and ISIS West Africa insurgency, which has been going on since 2009, is that it has produced terrible consequences for the population.
“As the military authorities have begun to coordinate their activities more effectively, they and the civilian authorities have gained access to areas previously under the control of Boko Haram.
“As that happens, we have all come to understand more clearly the true dimensions of the humanitarian crisis,’’ the envoy said.
But, he said that the military operations alone could not solve the problem in northeast of Nigeria.
“We are engaged with Nigeria and its neighbours, not only to provide humanitarian relief to the victims of this insurgency but to help them as security and intelligence partners to address the security dimensions of this problem’
“At the end of the day, I think we and our partners all recognise there’s no purely military solution.
“The hopes and aspirations of the people need to be met.
“Education, water and basic governance need to be provided in areas where it has not been provided before.
“And it’s a joint effort; there are no easy solutions, but we’re in this for the long haul.’’
